What Do You Expect From Defensive Scheme?

More aggressiveness and proper tackling, tackling and once again tackling.I do not expect fireworks but some progress in defense against running will be welcomed.

Nothing. In New England, the scheme doesn't matter: the weaknesses of the defensive players come playoff time is what matters. We have about 18 years of proof of that.
Yup 27-10, 8 afc championships and 5 Sb wins worth of weak defensive players come the playoffs.

More qb pressure is all I’d like to see.

We have better pass rushers so we should see better pass rushing.
Contrary to popular (or vocal minority) belief you don’t get they just by saying you want to.

You are still missing the point. Both teams with their effectiveness at RPOs were exactly the worst matchup for a defense that could not stop the run. People were talking about this ad nauseaum for 2 weeks before the game.

In the end this game is about matchups and the Eagles had simply more ways to attack our defense than vice versa. This doesn't mean the defense never actually got better on average but just that they were not equipped to deal with this kind of matchup. Or in other words they had to make some plays because the margin for error was non-existant and then nobody stepped up and made those plays.

But to invalidate about 12 games of evidence -- including a AFCCG where the defense saved the day in a game where the offense struggled considerably -- is just wrong. They got better but in the end the scheme changes to address the talent deficit were not enough to make up for it.

I don’t count games against the Jets, Broncos, Raiders, Dolphins, etc. as a measuring stick for defensive improvement. Against the Pittsburgh late in the season, the steelers had over 400 yards of total offense, 143 rush yards and went 10 for 16 on 3rd down. My point - against the really good offenses last year (for the most part) the Pats D struggled. If Jax had a better QB, they put up 30+ points against us easily. The numbers showed they improved in November and December against mediocre teams, but then ran into one of the best offenses in the league in Philly and really had no answer. It’s more than just the RPO.

I expect the Patriots defense will drop back in coverage rather than be aggressive
and rush the passer. They will make Watson look like a fast Tom Brady. If the Pats
fall behind 21-7 this time around, they will lose 42 -14.

To hopefully have a consistent Defensive Scheme.

I am optimistic due to experience. We not only rattled through a bunch of guys early in 2017, Ealy, Nink, Branch, etc., but the guys that replaced them Lee, Wise, Butler were all new. Also Gilmore, Rowe, even JJ somewhat, were new. So this year we have new guys, Clayborn and Sheldon, but at least they are experienced and were here for all of training camp. And a bunch of the others are now in Year 2 or 3, Gilmore, Rowe, JJ, Wise, Butler, HT, Roberts. The new guys, Bentley, Crossen, Jackson, etc. don't have to play unless they first learn what they are doing.

I think the experience, yet relative youth, allows the coaches to scheme more because everyone is understanding what is being called.

I think the new guys help a lot, there is more talent IMO, but also the continuity is vital as well.

This defense will be better.

OK so your argument is what? They lack athletic pass rushers, which they had in 2014, but this is the best group since 2014, yet they're not athletic?

Pretty much, they had play makers on the team in 2014 and now they really don't. Hightower and Gilmore are the Patriots best players. D. McCourty is an excellent safety, but he isn't a guy who makes a lot of INTs like other safeties in the league.

Really, other than that, they don't have any players that are really impressive.

Eye test= I am irrational and want to complain so I am picking out something that is fine and inventing a reason to cry about it.

Meh, they didn't really pass the eye test last year and they got wrecked in the Superbowl.

But the eagles had a good defense?

Whether or not they have "playmakers" on the defense is a separate discussion from whether or not they have athleticism in the pass rush, no?

So your argument is that games that support your opinion count and games that don’t do not, and apparently all nfl teams don’t play games against good teams as well as bad teams.
Alrighty then.

Athleticism is a relative term. They are all pretty friggin athletic. But, none of them are Chandler Jones.

Let's be honest ... We expect a lot of frustration as viewers, then some confusion when the "eye test" doesn't match up with the game-day results, and lots of arguments here between games.

That is the 2nd time you have mentioned the eye-test. It means nothing because your eyes arent experienced enough nor objective. Eye- test LOL

If the Pats D ranked at 28th in points allowed last year that is the first thing you would have pointed to. Because they were top five, and that stat dosent fit your narrative you have gone all straw-man to try to save face here.

You mentioned the 03 and 04 D as if the point you were trying to make was that this current D cant be good because 03-04 had more talent? Is that your point?
