Welcome to the Pats Deatrich Wise.

If Flowers is nicknamed " Technique" and Wise views him as a "big brother" type, do we have " technique 2" or "technique jr."??

A very fixable thing which with good coaching should vastly improve his game....

35" arms....He must have a ***** of a time buying shirts.

Quick but might be a little slow?

Seems like a quality pick. We'll see.

More excited about Rivers.
That's why BB drafted him. So they can share sleeveless hoodies

So maybe during his visit the Pats worked on hands placement and think it is correctable and Wise is coachable?

One can hope. It should be noted that Reiss leaked the Wise interest before we made our first pick of Rivers. He was clearly targeted from the start which increases my confidence level.

Same stuff was sayed 2years ago with Flowers. Was a clear 1 round pick entering 2015 and injuries plommed hes draft stuck. Patriots picked him in the 4th.

Wise is same story repeating, but bigger, longer, faster etc.

I honestly think Patriots stole him.

Was just listening to a draft podcast and CBS draft guy Dane Brugler mentioned that he'd heard that Deatrich Wise had coachibility issues. Just something to bear in mind.

While I certainly won't discount the report out of hand, I have a hard time imagining that Belichick didn't get the inside scoop. He talks with coach Bielema quite a bit, from what I understand. That's one of the reasons they were so comfortable with Flowers. I'm pretty happy with the pick.

Wise would really benefit from a red shirt yeast because he needs to get stronger.

Everything else points to a year two leap for him, barring major injury.

He saw less playing time for a reason. Maybe BB just felt he was worth the risk at that point or, as you said, had better info on what issues Wise might have had. BB did take Easley in the first round - it's not like he's not prepared to take a shot on these guys.

I love these breakdowns by Justin. They are so detailed.

Clearly Wise is raw and a project as a player. Whether he'll become a productive player will depend on how well he takes to the coaching here. It's ironic that he looks upon Flowers as a mentor. While Flowers nickname is "technique", Wise's nickname right now would be "no techinique".

If he doesn't develop a "punch" and good hand placement, he will end up being Jake Bequette 2.0. If he does, then he has a chance to be someone whose length, strength, and ability to "bend", will turn him into a productive player.

I hope he can play ST's because I don't see him playing much of a role on defense in 2017

Jake Bequette was one of those guys that you saw first day in training camp and knew we had made a mistake drafting him so high. He was useless in the NFL. He never flashed once, he never made any plays, he was constantly destroyed in practice and in preseason games when he managed to get in.

Nice take by Reiss w Arkansas HC Bret Bielema (ex Wisconsin) about his NE connections and Deatrich Wise (the 3rd Pats 4th rounder from his crop in 4yrs)

'BB' connection of Bret Bielema to Bill Belichick is paying off for Patriots

quote:

2. Bielema on similarities between defensive ends Flowers (6-foot-2, 265 pounds) and Wise (6-5, 270): “They both went to Arkansas and wore a ‘Hog on their head, but that’s about where it stops. They’re both tremendous players. I’ve seen them both look as special as you can be, but I think Trey is a little more of an every-down thing. He’s wired a little different, can do multiple things. Deatrich, as a pure pass-rusher, is as good as I’ve been around. I’m not saying he’s going to be J.J. Watt, but J.J. was an extremely good pass-rusher, especially in the third and fourth quarter because he knew how to use his length. Deatrich is the same. That’s why we had some success when we put him inside, against shorter personnel. ...

“I think the part they do share is that they’re very, very intelligent. We do a thing here at Arkansas that we teach Football IQ and call it ‘Hogonese.’ They are classes year-round where we get our guys better at the language and culture we want in our program. Both of those guys would have been straight-A students in those classes. They understood what we’re asking people to do and why we’re asking them to do it.”
