Week 3 Jets vs Dolphins game thread

How are the schools out that way anyway? The worst I ever saw was in western South Carolina, but I'm sure LA could give them a run for their money.

Pretty terrible; California's budget is a trainwreck for a lot of political reasons that I probably shouldn't get into here (it's not as simple as most people claim). Public schools are already massively underfunded, and it's only going to get worse. There are some pretty good charter schools, though, although I don't see how that's a solution since pretty much by definition most people don't have access to them.

FWIW, I spend some time doing volunteer teaching in some of the less well-off areas around L.A. (Inglewood, basically). You see a lot of 2nd generation hispanics here who are pretty far behind in their English skills because they have parents who speak literally no English. They speak it, but I think in a lot of cases it might take another full generation before they can get to the point where it isn't a significant liability. Of course, I'm speaking in generalities; there are plenty of exceptions.

I'm confused if you're using 2nd generation conventionally or to mean something else. First-generation refers to the children of immigrants. Second-generation is the grandchildren of immigrants.

Well this thread is completley worthless now that it's a political debate...

My bad, then- I've always used first generation to refer to the immigrants themselves, second generation to refer to their children.

All good points, but this thread is being derailed by this discussion.
Can we get back to football please?

Got it, I'm not surprised. A problem of public schools.

Yes, I responded to the stupidity about posting numbers which encompass millions of lawbreakers. And "Way to be progressive" is blatantly political.

My "progressive" statement was humanistic not political. It's your stupidity, not mine, if you immediately associate Spanish speakers with lawbreakers.

The reason there are so many Spanish speakers in the U.S. is because there are so many here illegally

My statement is accurate. Your statement is a load of bull.

Good for that penalty which pushed them well out of FG range.

More a problem of homes that's compounded by underfunded schools, IMO. Public schools can be highly effective when properly funded and when learning doesn't stop at home, but no school can raise your kids for you

why try a 61 yard FG when a Hail Mary is just as likely and scores more points?

The wind was at his back, so he had a semi-legit shot at hitting that FG if it doesn't get blocked.

Phins should have tried a return.

My comment was not intended to be political. Your statement may be accurate but has nothing to do with the reason why I posted that number.

Dolphins are going to take the lead after the half. I hate to say it, though, but Sanchez looks good. He's really improved a ton over last year (which still isn't saying much). Glad to see he's doing it against one of the top defenses in the league and it isn't just us that made him look like an All-Pro last week.

Where is Santana when you need him?

Does this broadcast look like complete crap to anyone else? I swear NBC should have their broadcasting license revoked for the horrible HD broadcasts they put out.

I was thinking the same thing. What are the chances that Fitzpatrick lights up the opposing D in their next game though?

Their sound and video never synch. Its annoying to watch the pregame and halftime show when everyone's lips are a second behind what I hear.

Well they're playing the Jets next week, so probably not too likely.
