Personally, if we can take anything from preseason, I'd like to see Boutte out there for some meaningful snaps. Dude looked like he was getting consistent separation. See what he can do.

EDIT: Not denigrating Mayo's play, but the Patriots have had outstanding linebacker play. I'd be hard-pressed to take Mayo over Tippett, McGinest, and a guy I rarely see get mentioned but was a hell of a counterpart to Tipp... Don Blackmon.

I put him 6 and said I probably missed someone. Can you push him any lower than that?
Brandon Spikes was also a MLB who gets forgotten but he's further down my list. He was a fierce hitter.

I edited my prior post you responded to and Mayo would be probably 3rd on my list for who've I've seen play since I started watching the Pats in the mid 90's. Ted Johnson was the first MLB I saw play.

I don't think comparing him to Hightower is fair as they were different players.

Mayo would be 3rd or 4th on my list for who've I've seen play since I started watching the Pats in the mid 90's. Ted Johnson was the first MLB I saw play.
Spikes laid some lumber but he was not as good as Mayo.

The only LB's on your list I saw play were Johnson, Bruschi and Hightower who both played on the outside and inside. Mayo would be below Bruschi and I wouldn't compare him to Hightower as they are different players.

I clearly never said he sucked.

Pats run defenses with Mayo as a full time starter:

2008: 18th allowing 107 yards per game and 5th in TD's allowing 8.
2009: 20th allowing 110 yards per game and 3rd in TD's allowing 6.
2010: 11th allowing 110 yards per game and 10th in TD's allowing 10.
2011: 17th allowing 117 yards per game and 19th in TD's allowing 13.
2012: 9th allowing 101 yards per game and 10th in TD's allowing 10.
Pretty good!

You’re not wrong… But he was never, even at his peak, 8th-overall pick in the draft great either.
For what he was asked to do in a Belichick defense he was immense. As I mentioned Injuries slowed his career. Especially the knee injury in 2009.

The guy was a literal coverage linebacker making up for the disgrace of a secondary we had. I would kill for a Mayo LB today. I am so lost on how this is even being considered lol. Does the Hot Take
Store need to issue a recall or some ****?
Yes. The 2011 secondary was atrocious. Sterling Moore, Philip adams....

2012: 9th allowing 101 yards per game

The guy was all over the field and had to be played in a way to help address the absolute **** hole secondary. He was respected for his versatility and quickness.

2010: 31st, allowing 258 yards per game
- Mayo gets 174 combined tackles

2011: 31st, allowing 282 yards per game
- Mayo gets 95 combined tackles

2012: 29th, allowing 272 yards per game
- Mayo gets 147 tackles

2013: 26th, allowing 252 yards per game
- Mayo gets 55 tackles in 6 games before injury

This ain't news, take it from the hospital nearly unanimous DROY, at 49/50 votes.

"Mayo's versatility, highlighted by quickness and a physical style, made him stand out even though the Patriots didn't make the playoffs.

"Jerod's done a lot for us," coach Bill Belichick said. "We've asked a lot of him and from Day 1 he's really been a well-prepared, very mature player who can do a lot of things: play the running game, play in the passing game, blitz, helps us in the kicking game.

"He's smart, makes a lot of defensive adjustments and calls for us there. He runs well. He's tough. He's a good all-around football player, very mature, very professional. For a rookie, he's probably as professional as anybody I've coached." "

2009 commentary show's how Bill used Mayo all over the field, not just against the run:

"Thursday night in the preaseason opener against Philadelphia, playing in the middle of a 4-3, as opposed to the weakside inside linebacker spot he typically plays in the 3-4, Mayo was more free to roam and make plays. He was very active, leading the team with five tackles and playing nearly a half of football.

He seemed to be everywhere, blowing up plays. If it's possible, he could be even more of a monster on defense than last season. Mayo, however, shrugged off the suggestion of any difference between his roles in a 3-4 or 4-3 alignment."

The typical ILB is focusing on the run, but if you're tasked to be all over the field, I'm not sure you could say Mayo had a traditional ILB experience.

I have never feared a 3rd and long as much as I did those years. It was almost worst to be 3rd and long than 3rd and short it felt like lol.
Lol boy!! I remember that season. I think they allowed a 3rd 20 something one game. I almost dropped the remote. Lol
.

Gronk, Travis, and Jason Kelce all said that Spikes was the most fierce hitter they ever played with.

Hightower was definitely in a different context.

All-pro, pro bowler.... I don't know about him not being good. Mayo was dam good LB... his career was shortened by injuries.
Never said he wasn’t good !! Guy was great… I do feel like lots of his tackles were in the secondary. Not sure what broke down. Containment I’m guessing. Just remember thinking he’s pretty fast and big to be downfield !!

If NE can hold Seattles running game in check and not let them pop off, I like their chances of winning I don’t think Geno can beat em with his arm even with all of the weapons he has.

If NE can push 17-20 points, I think they go 2-0.

Oh I know someone in the thread I believe mentioned him about not being good. So I posted that. From about 09-13 we bad some pretty porous play in the secondary. Once McCourty solidified the S position it got a little better. But your right mayo was a tackle machine.. he had great instincts and covered alot of ground. I believe that's what led to alot of his injuries. Had he been healthy he would have been a patriots hall of famer I believe.

Totally agree. Plus the consummate professional. Love the old style players . Keep your mouth shut. Do your job.

Yes. The 2011 secondary was atrocious. Sterling Moore, Philip adams....
That said, they did their job in the postseason. 21 points to the Giants is acceptable. What isn't acceptable is the offense going 2.5 quarters or whatever it was without scoring. If I had to rank TB's SB performances, this might be last. He was decent to good. But not good enough.

It took an all time great throw and catch to get the Giants in range to win the game.
