This core special teamer stuff has expanded too much.

How important was field position in the Superbowl?

almost as important as benching your #2 cb.
But yeah take one game where there was a single punt and use that as the basis for your entire argument.

expand your mind a little and check the numbers, i think the jags game the patriots started each drive an average of 15 yards closer to the end zone then the jags.

Patriots won 3 superbowls with starters on special teams.
The most dangerous play in football is gunners colliding with kick returners.

I honestly clicked on this post thinking you were making fun of the poster who broke the solder to gmen news 2 hours later. I’m disappointed that this wasn’t the case. And for that you get a dislike.

I was two whole hours late and you chaps gave me that much stick. The way you all carried on I thought I was at least a day late. Lol.

As we should of. Lesson learned, if your going to post some breaking news make sure it’s actually breaking news.

I never said it was breaking news. I said 'Solder to Giants.'

Details. Listen if your this butthurt over some razzing then I don’t know what to tell you.

Why do you think that was? Could it be because of the Patriots offense? Could it have been the Patriots kicker? How much better is Nate Ebner and Brandon King than other guys who can also play defense if somebody gets hurt?

I posit that you can have good/developing positional players who are also great special teams players. Rodney Harrison, Teddy Bruschi, Mike Vrbel.

By having core special teams players, depth becomes an issue.

I wonder who said "football players play football"

Alright, lets dump slater, ebner, and bolden. then take the 2 million extra cap space and get us a real top end blue chipper backup.

just ignore the fact that slater has been voted into the pro bowl every year, and that he and ebner consistently get tackles on punts inside of the 10 yard line. Don't worry if the patriots give up a bunch of return td's we can just blame it on the new guy.

I posit you have no clue how much time ST players invest into gameplanning every week. If you would it would be apparent to you that you want to have dedicated core ST players who can focus on their individual responsibilities. Because guess what they are not just running down the field. Each position in the formation has multiple jobs that change on many plays every week.

If you want to mix this with players that in addition to that also need to keep their defensive/offensive gameplan in head go on but dont be surprised if those players half-ass their ST plays.

And dont bring me anything from the good old days and how we had defensive players on ST back then because time has progressed there as well and the job has become more specialized and complex.

It doesnt cost much, gives the team a lot of toughness and frequently an edge in terms of starting position. No reason to start saving money on that.

There is no talking sense into him. Cutting all the special teamers to save a few bucks is going to be the newest thing in NFL next yr.

Mathieu to the Steelers is getting some talk in the past 24 hours. Lots of current and former players attempting to recruit him, and some of the local sports radio hosts claiming that the front office has been waiting for a blue chip secondary player like this to hit the market for awhile, which seems like an odd statement.

I have a hard time believing it due to cost and their cap situation, but they’ve sacrificed the future for the present before, so who knows. I’d hate to see him go to a major contender.

Patriots spend too much money of special teams only guys. ST has been less and less a factor in this league and the Patriots carry too many guys who only do one thing.

Mat Slater
Brandon King
and the Rugby guy

I mean, are you serious, we spent a lot of money on guys who can't do anything but tackle folks down the field when most punts are fair caught and most kick offs are downed.

Patriots need to invest money on position players who can also play special teams. This specialist stuff is a mess.

This might be one of the dumber things I’ve read today. ST accounts for 1/3rd of the playing structure, we are consistently at the top of the league in ST play and field position metrics, and you want to lop off a team strength because you can’t be bothered to spell one guys name right or remember the other?
