And that's what Matt Forte said.... and then he signed with the Jets.

And Danny Amendola was never going to leave New England.... until he did.

We all have our price. Some people's price is higher than others.
Yeah the Forte example is a good one. He was going on and on about wanting to be on a contender and then he takes a big money deal with the friggin’ Jets of all places.

I feel like these guys just say “I want to win” to look good or something. If they said “I want the most money” they would look bad, even though obviously that’s the biggest factor.

Ok apart from Gilmore who got a market deal last year , we don't have any superstar player with a top of the market contract. Gronk's contract is a bargain. McCourthy got his deal 3 years ago in that market's reality. We are not resigning Solder. All the receivers are in affordable contracts. Brady always takes less and I'd even discount the QB from this math since every team is basically spending a lot on QB and still able to sign top players. So the "real cap" equation is like Salary Cap - 20 MI QB = real cap. Every team works under the same cap.

Why are we so broke?

Well obviously I know why, BB prefers to spread the money all over the roster instead of only in some pieces, I get that, I understand that through all these years, I just wonder if maybe the NFL economics is changing to a point that one would question this philosophy. Teams are being forced to pay to stay competitive. When the lights are bright top players have been making plays and Jags have been doing what it's expected from them to do, to fail.

Imagine if Gronk had held out in one of these years and forced the Patriots to pay him what he deserves, we would be even more ****ed. The Patriots would stay put in 3 SB's if not for Brady operating some miracles so it's not like these philosophy was the difference maker in the big dance. It makes you get there I won't deny. Just wondering..

I'm kind of split on whether to have a new thread for every big name or one thread for all the names.

I like opening up the forum and seeing separate threads that are easily identifiable with a big name. It's quick to see and the posts are focused on that particular player.

How about this? Each free agent news opens up in a separate thread but labeled FA in the title and after two days it's merged into the FA mega thread. That would be great.

I’m usually not a thread police type of guy. Honestly people starting new threads isn’t gonna ruin my day or anything, it’s really no big deal to me. Even provides a good laugh from time to time (solder to giants)

The bold would be a solid compromise

Why are we so broke?

We are not broke.

It looks like we dont have a lot of money because you have the ugly, unsuccessful moron teams in SF and Cleveland going into ultra tank mode cutting any expensive player for years. Only to end up in an offseason where both have almost 100m in room to play around.

The only thing that changed is that everyone got even more expensive relatively speaking. Your slot corners, sam LBs.. they are now also getting paid like starters..

I dont even understand what you mean ? Spend more ? Like the Eagles or the Saints and borrow against the future ? Is that your suggestion ? Because as soon Bradys and DMacs restructure appear (and they will) this is exactly what we have done.

Have less middle class players (i.e. less depth) and be more top heavy to wither like the Seahawks once injuries hit ? The depth is what dragged that stinking cropse of a front 7 into a SB.

There is exactly nothing that needs to change philosophically. Amazing how losing in the SB can bum people out to the point where they think something is fundamentally wrong.

Biggest reasons we are broke, in my opinion?

2016: No 1st round pick. Patriots need extra higher price external free agents to cover cheap 3rd year contract of this player

2017: Traded 1st round pick for Brandin Cooks. Now paying $7M on the cap for Cooks versus a much cheaper 1st round pick cost for year 2.

Patriots spend too much money of special teams only guys. ST has been less and less a factor in this league and the Patriots carry too many guys who only do one thing.

Mat Slater
Brandon King
and the Rugby guy

I mean, are you serious, we spent a lot of money on guys who can't do anything but tackle folks down the field when most punts are fair caught and most kick offs are downed.

Patriots need to invest money on position players who can also play special teams. This specialist stuff is a mess.

Okay. Who?

Im a big no no for the idea of mergin a bunch of threads into one.

First of all, this is will make it so more difficult to control each subject... Every time some situation gets updated, people will be compeled to create a thread, so instead of having one thread for talking about Gronk or Suh or whateber, we'd end up with thousands small threads (i include people's ignorance of this unsaid rule here)

And that leads to my second point: by putting all threads into one, even after a few days, it will serious diminish the amount of interaction between posters, because of mere confusion of having all the FA talking into one. If there is a heated argument going on, posts are bound to be skipped and forgotten. And this is one of the most active message boards around too

Personally, i love how much freedom we get here.

spoken like a man that doesn't understand how important field position is.

That depends on how you define a 'a lot of money.'
Slater made $600k over the vet minimum last year
King's contract maxes at $400k past minimum
The 'rugby guy's' hit is $1.4m past minimum.

All told that's an investment of $2.4m past what would be paid for 3 warm bodies. Year in and year out the Pats have among the best ST's in the game. There's a reason for that and most football fans hold that field position matters. All due respect but I'm going to have to give The Hoodie the nod on this one.

we need linebackers......good ones

I agree but who’s available?

lots of guys in the draft.........good ones that will help right away

Vander Esch in round 1
Harold Landry at the top of round 2
Genard Avery round 4
Fred Warner round 5

problem solved

LOOVVVVE D-Mac & truly appreciate his value to the NE Defense. I’m actually one of the guys who defends him on this forum. However, due to factors such as his age & contract, I’m beginning to wonder if BB would actually trade him for a 2nd/3rd round pick (ex: to a team like AZ) and sign Mathieu which would in turn, offset the loss at multiple positions FS/CB/LB in dime situations. He’d likely be cheaper & just as; if not more versatile. The only thing I’d worry about is the loss of Mc Courty extremely high mental acuity; especially in our D.

Just a thought. BB is cut throat, unpredictable & economically savvy.

Tyrann Mathieu rumors: Former Cardinals safety could be eyeing New England Patriots

"I want to go somewhere where football and defense matters," Mathieu told Breer. "...It's not all about money for me. I want to go somewhere where I can be completely immersed in football, and it's not too much about anything but winning. I want to be a part of winning culture, where you feel that all the time. That's all I want."

“The Honey Badger is regarded as one of the league's most versatile defensive backs. He can play slot cornerback as well as either safety position. The Pats are in the market for a slot corner.”

He won’t cut d Mac. He’s a defacto leader. Probably make him take a cut or something tho

His point is just so stupid. BB loves his special team and it produces so much advantage in games. Also playing starters on special team is No No No. First, they do not practice enough special teaming. Second, Gronk almost lost a arm blocking for a field goal.

How important was field position in the Superbowl?

Patriots won 3 superbowls with starters on special teams.
