Tyquan Thornton Having a Tough Camp

What's going to be fun to see develop is the Zay Flowers vs. Pop Douglas debate. We could have had Flowers in the 1st round, but we took a very similar, but lesser known WR in the 6th round. Will this be another Chad Pennington vs. TB12 situation?
Zay - 22nd pick, DD - 210th pick
Chad - 18th pick, Brady - 199th pick

The track record of drafting WRs is largely not drafting them or not drafting them early.
The result of that strategy is the winningest 23 year run in the history of the sport.
Perhaps rather than whining about WRs that would lead you to understand that drafting WRs isn’t as important as you think.
But that’s just me, I see success, I say whatever happened worked. You see success and you find the flaw that was overcome and act as if it was a horrendous curse.

Since Brady left we have drafted Nixon in the 7th, Thornton in the 2nd, Douglas and Boutte in thf 6th. I don’t see a player there who is a bust.

Every franchise has down periods, few can attribute it to needing to rebuild after going to 4 SBs in 5 years and winning 3. They have been average through a rebuild. But it must be the wide receivers right because they get the fantasy football points.

The discussion was AFTER BRADY LEFT.
We went to 9 SBs and won 6 when Brady was here, I think things worked out well.

Not at the expense of where they would have been weakened to use high picks on WRs.

Every year the college feeding system pumps out 20+ players who are good enough ATHLETES to play in the NFL. Who makes roster and who makes impacts happen AFTER they start the development process. It would seem (at this point) Douglas is making a good transition into the pro game. That simply means his HEAD is connecting to his innate athleticism. He can read the defense AND process what he sees and run good routes.

A guy like Boutte, not so much......at this point. He has just as much "talent". It is just a question whether HE can connect it to his talent. We've seen flashes of it, but he can't always be trusted to be where he is supposed to be. Again, it is where he is AT THIS POINT. Not every guy develops at the same rate. It was Boutte's ATTITUDE that made him a 6th round pick.

AT THIS point it looks like the team views Douglas as a guy who can fill an immediate role while Boutte struggles with consistency issues. A LOT of WR's have this struggle in their early years in the league so I won't dismiss him and hope he remains on the team, he is an intriguing prospect.

Also Douglas will HAVE to be ready to take snaps on the offense IF Gisicki's injury starts to go into September. During this time the Pats are likely to go with standard 3 receiver sets

I said if he’s healthy, I already accounted for health.

It’s not a lack of skill or ability to produce when healthy that’s going to keep Thornton off the roster.

It’s irrelevant, the guy has practiced and played well.

He’s not lost out there wondering how to do his job. He looks good. The injuries aren’t ideal, but that’s the sport.

Garbage… the first day of OTA’s he smoked everyone, he was the talk of the town. Then he got hurt.

In the last preseason game he played more with the seconds because he missed time with a soft tissue injury. BB explained it fully, players who got less reps in practice the week prior would play more.

In the final day of joint practices he was back to smoking Packers defenders. He got hurt hauling in a diving 40-50 yard bomb, depending who you asked.

I also attended a practice in between all that where I saw him catch multiple passes and get open a couple other times. There’s nothing wrong with Thornton the player beyond his ability to stay healthy… and I think it’s too early to declare him injury prone. Edelman had that label early in his career and turned out alright.

Where he was drafted should have nothing to do with it. That's a sunk cost and shouldn't factor in it.

Make be it shouldn’t, but it does. Jameson Williams is off to a worse start to his career than Thornton but he isn’t going anywhere. Teams stick with young players they have invested heavily in, even though sometimes they shouldn’t. And the problem with Thornton “ busting” is that it would once again leave them without a WR who can really threaten teams deep, and they need that to open up underneath.

Ultimately a lot more goes into the decision than simply his numbers and pre season production. Truth is that they know much more about him as a person and player than we do. If he isn’t doing the work, or just doesn’t have what it takes then they know that by now, but if he does and fortune just hasn’t broken his way then they know that as well, and will stick with him.

He caught his first pass in camp from Mac like a week ago. But apparently he's the talk of camp?

I haven't seen anything mentioning how great he's been?
