Tyquan Thornton Having a Tough Camp

I'd love to know the ratio in the war room. Who had the balls to say "why are we picking a 4th-5th RD guy, top 50."

The closest I've heard of that was from Chris Simms' only year in the Pats front office (2012) where he saw scouts get so mad at Bill for taking the player when he did. They asked Bill why they they were taking this player so early and got so disgusted, they walked out of the War Room. Before he revealed the name, I was thinking it was going to be Tavon Wilson, but it was none other than Chandler ****ing Jones. This was on his show with Mike Florio about a year ago.

What a buzz kill revealing that name as Jones was mocked to Pats and was a consensus 1st rounder going in the early 20's. There was nothing shocking about that pick.

Hey, any senior Patriots fans here's a question if you have been at camp. Demarco Douglas fits into a role like:
1. Dave Megget, ( he was a back) great hands
2. David Patten. Deep threat
3. Wes Welker. First down maker
4. Julian Edelman. 100 yards per game

Troy brown as well.. his body type is probably closer to Troy brown, he has the speed and quickness of dion Lewis. Can't wait to see him in game action!

Speaking of Thornton perhaps some of you fantasy experts can help me.

Dynasty 2 qb Superflex PPR I was offered Jahan Dotson and Sam Howell for Jamaal Williams Baker Mayfield and Tyquan Thornton. Would you pull the trigger? My thinking is I would be getting the best player in the bunch with Dotson.

In a heartbeat. Dotson is by far the best asset in that deal, and Howell has more upside than Mayfield at this point. Even without knowing the state of your RB situation I say go for it if you still can. Williams isn’t a long term dynasty asset.

Go figure 1st and 2nd round bust landed on a team with JJ.. Harry and Williams.. question? In practice if Williams is on Harry do they both run into each other and fall down .

From what I understand on Thornton, his speed was what attracted The team. They knew he had ability and just needed to work on his route running and add to his thin frame.

I agree with you, he needs to show something more this season. But I'm not ready to give up on him. I believe he has to much potential, he had the one element you cannot coach and that's speed. Other guys hung around on this roster and pretty much did nothing in the league.1st and 2nd rounders in 2019 N'Keal Harry, joeun Williams, heck Harry even asked to traded and still remained on the roster. Allow some more time and patience with Thornton would be my thinking.

We all know why we picked him. At some point the conversation had to steer towards "what can he do for us immediately" considering its a BB team. That question gets asked 247 to vets, rookies, new players, old players.

I appreciate the swing but we had a bunch or good prospects to choose from and said "nope, this one." Again he should be flashing as our WR1 not behind late round picks. Certainly NOT giving up bc the kid has some gifts. I'm just frustrated with the lack or presence so far but it's very early. Just want him to work out.

I definitely understand your point, we heard nothing but praise in camp on N'Keal Harry, Chad Jackson, ect. guys we took high obviously.. whenever it became game time those guys were non factors..

I believe Thornton will be fine going forward.. his speed is just a trait that is God given and can't be coached. He just needs seasoning to his game. If he can stay healthy he will have an opportunity to do so this year.

With Thornton, the Patriots took a big swing and maybe they missed. But I do like the fact they went out of their mold of picking smurfs with no downfield speed or big guys with no separation. So maybe we can call that progress? But if Thornton FLOPS, which he might, he'll just go down as Bethel Johnson 2.0.

The fans are now hanging onto a sliver of hope here that one of our 6th round WR picks might pan out. But the Patriots track record of drafting WRs has just been AWFUL if we're being honest. So it's really hard to be optimistic about Thornton.

Certainly some of the other WRs in his draft class have looked better, particularly the guys taken right after him - in particular George Pickens and Alec Pierce. Those guys are going to draw close comparisions to Thornton who so far has put up N'Keal Harry-esque numbers early on in his career.

If conventional football practice stands, TT will not be cut or traded this year. So, they either:
1. force their organizational decision onto the roster at the expense of risking losing a potential like Boutte on waivers.
2. IR him for the year, in favor of the potential of Boutte.
3. Trade Bourne and roll the dice with Boutte in his role, while hoping TT provides the spark you need.
4. Keep all 6 WR's on the 53 - and make Boutte play ST.

Currently, I can see them carrying 6 WR's on the first 53, then during week 1, cut 1 to try to sneak them onto PS after all the teams have done their waiver scraping. While hiding a guy like Speed, Bolden, or Perkins through waivers and bring them back as the 53rd guy.

I don't know if I'd rather try to sneak Booty through waivers with everybody else on Cut-Down Day, when there'll be almost One Thousand players hitting the street at the same time... Might be easier to have him go unnoticed that way...

That is known especially with our track record of Second Round WR selections...selecting their sold called guys. Them hitting on one maybe two in the 6th Round WRs is called Great Value.

Pats history says if Thornton doesn’t show anything this season, it’s a 99.9% chance he ends up a bust. It’s nobody’s fault but the guy who picked him.

Thornton will play more than 50% of the snaps. And will make plays.
Bourne could definitely be the odd man out but there is no reason they can’t keep him as injury insurance.
There is no reason you can’t keep 6 WRs. 8 players are inactive every week.

The best chance to sneak Boutte onto the Practice Squad is on the day that 1000 players are cut/waived.

In any case, if he is worth a year of development, some other team will be willing to sign him off our Practice Squad.

To be clear, if we value Boutte enough to develop him for 2024, we would need to have him as a developmental player on the 53. There is room for a player or two like that. For me, the bottom line choice is whether we want to have Boutte or Thornton as a developmental player on the 53.
