They need a veteran QB who is proven to be at least a competent game manager. Hoyer is staying unless replaced by a better vet or if someone emerges to Jimmy G. level of talent. So, the battle is between Stidham and Etling. Guessing they’re not thrilled with Etling (hence the Stidham pick), but my guess is as good as yours. A seventh round pick being cut in year 2 is pretty common. With the QB position, it’s like sorting through a deck of cards and trying to find aces...there’s no point in keeping guys with highly unlikely upside for multiple seasons just because you drafted him. Draft another guy next year and hope to get lucky. QBs are worth burning some draft capital every year.
Bottom line, I don’t see them (a) releasing Hoyer, or (b) keeping four QBs. My theory from the outside is that Etling is likely out unless he makes a huge leap in year 2.
Of course. It is absolutely worth it to have a quality backup. This is the most important depth on the entire roster.
Only the rarest WR5, S5 or CB6 will ever be worth close to the value that a dependable QB2 brings to the table. Again, you can scheme around almost all injuries on a NFL team (until they become too much) except for QB.
I think people are selling Danny Etling short he's not going to win any beauty contest like Brady or Jimmg G but he's got some tools to work with. I hope Etling knocks Hoyer off the Roster.
I also don't know of any examples of a player choosing to stay on one team's PS when another team was willing to put him on the 53-man roster. Quite honestly, I doubt such a thing has ever happened but I can't say I know for certain.
Again, thats the wrong question. I doesnt matter a single bit how often we have done anything before because we have never been exactly in this exact situation.
You keep looking at things that are the effect and not the cause.
Pretty sure the Pats draft based upon how the players are rated, not based upon their needs. So drafting Stidham isn’t about Etling not going well, it was based on their grade of him.
Didn’t we have three qb’s a couple years ago, when Brady was suspended?
