We went from #1 from 19-23 to # 30. That chart isn’t rankings and the difference between 2017 and 2024 is bigger than it appears in that chart. 2017 Patriots were 5th in points allowed. Downplaying an efficiency metric when you are 5 in points allowed and a Sb team is different than when you are abused week in and week out and 3-11.Defensive EPA this year is about the same as when they made it to the SB in 2011 (and better than 2020) and not much lower than the 2017 SB loss team. Yes it sucks, but considering the offensive struggles and injuries, it's not quite fireable as a one and done for me, but I have a different mendoza line. 2019 was also abnormally historically high (Boogeymen) which can massively skew the data.

Shouldn’t he care about how they play rather than that they show up in a good mood when they suck?He didn't say to be proud of the guys for showing up to work, he's saying to be proud of the guys the way they show up to work. There's a huge difference for me there. This is the kind of twist that pisses BB off and makes him grumble answers.
This game of semantics is pointless. It doesn’t matter which way you interpret it, it still sucks. He didn't say to be proud of the guys for showing up to work, he's saying to be proud of the guys the way they show up to work. I can't find any context regarding this statement. Do you have the full line of questioning and answer? This game of semantics is pointless. It doesn’t matter which way you interpret it, it still sucks.
Option A: “You reporters should be proud that the players show up to work”
Option B: “You reporters should be proud that the players show up to work with a good demeanor”
Neither is good. Why should the media (or us) care about their demeanor when they don’t carry that demeanor over into the actual game? Like okay great Dugger and Tavai are in high spirits on Wednesday. How does that stop them from continuing to make the same errors every week? None of that has anything to do with the questions he was being asked, which were about how they were planning to fix a defense on a steep decline. “Being happy mid-week” doesn’t do anything.
I read it as their preparation - having done the homework and being mentally ready and motivated to work, and I got the impression he was trying to stay positive for his guys. We'll see if it makes a difference this week. I'm usually optimistic, but...Shouldn’t he care about how they play rather than that they show up in a good mood when they suck?
When asked about a steep decline, can you really be positive about and answer that says don’t read much into that be proud of them for showing up mentally ready and ignore how crappy the play on the field is?I read it as their preparation - having done the homework and being mentally ready and motivated to work, and I got the impression he was trying to stay positive for his guys. Imho, I don't think it's a matter of semantics, and it doesn't sound like just demeanor. It sounds like they're showing up prepared having done the homework and giving their best, and Covington is trying to be positive for his troops. Sucks that the product has been bad, whether that's scheme or whatever.
I'm mildly downplaying the metric because 2024 was the same as 2011 (and not much lower than 2017) despite probably having to be on the field more due to a more inept offense, so I don't think his statement alone is a fireable offense. If we include the complete body of work and stats (avg pts per drive probably worst since early 90s, etc), then yeah, we can probably get well into fireable realm, but I'd prob want to give him another year. I was just contesting your saying "this statement alone says [he] should be fired."We went from #1 from 19-23 to # 30. Not sure what you mean about blaming himself - I assume he would, but I guess we never know these days. Do you have a source for his throwing people under the bus (like Mayo)? So is he blaming himself? He took over a highly rated defense and turned it into a terribly ranked defense and the players are doing their best.
I usually post with a couple of scotches under my belt, so hopefully I make sense at least half the time.nevermind...its the shrooms talking.
We as fans? Oh heck no. As a coach trying to keep the spirits up for his guys still having to play more games this season? Absolutely. I mean he doesn't have to be pumped and jacked, but I can see why he does it.When asked about a steep decline, can you really be positive about and answer that says don’t read much into that be proud of them for showing up mentally ready and ignore how crappy the play on the field is?
Funny, I'd only been really looking at the graph from the Defensive axis, and when I finally looked at Offense, my GOD has the offense been bad recently. I mean we didn't need a chart to tell us, but Holy crap.We went from #1 from 19-23 to # 30. That chart isn’t rankings and the difference between 2017 and 2024 is bigger than it appears in that chart. 2017 Patriots were 5th in points allowed. That’s the thing, I’m not as bothered by him saying he’s proud of the guys for showing up/“the way” they show up (even though that is stupid IMO), as I am bothered that he then tells the reporters/fans that they too should be proud. We as fans? Oh heck no. As a coach trying to keep the spirits up for his guys still having to play more games this season? Absolutely. I mean he doesn't have to be pumped and jacked, but I can see why he does it.
You are downplaying the metric because one time in the bb era it was as high, 13 years ago, in an offense explosion season (you didn’t list ranking) and looks a little close on a deceptive chart to another year?I'm mildly downplaying the metric because 2024 was the same as 2011 (and not much lower than 2017) despite probably having to be on the field more due to a more inept offense, so I don't think his statement alone is a fireable offense. There was almost no turnover on defense and he got Gonzalez back. Not sure what you mean about blaming himself - I assume he would, but I guess we never know these days. Do you have a source for his throwing people under the bus (like Mayo)?
Did he really inherit it though? There have been injuries and turnover. In your favor, though, the secondary has been healthy while last year had our CB4 as the best player all year.
Do you really think it’s effective coaching to tell players they are playing really bad to not worry about the results and be proud they are showing up and trying? We as fans? Oh heck no. As a coach trying to keep the spirits up for his guys still having to play more games this season? Absolutely. I mean he doesn't have to be pumped and jacked, but I can see why he does it.
But you are saying it’s fine as a fan.We as fans? Oh heck no. As a coach trying to keep the spirits up for his guys still having to play more games this season? Absolutely. I mean he doesn't have to be pumped and jacked, but I can see why he does it.
If he’s saying that publicly you wonder if it’s gotten so bad he thinks he needs to goad them into not quitting on the team and doesn’t hold them accountable at all for their play. That’s the thing, I’m not as bothered by him saying he’s proud of the guys for showing up/“the way” they show up (even though that is stupid IMO), as I am bothered that he then tells the reporters/fans that they too should be proud.
Why the F should I be proud of this **** product? So they’re showing up ready to work but then they suck? What does how eager they are to do a bad job matter to me, why should I be proud of it?
