The OLB Candidates

Calling draft experts,,

Any intriguing 3rd round and later picks for these LB positions???
Cody Brown may slip into the late second, but most draftnik sites rank him as a solid third, he's a pretty good edge rusher and he adds 8 passes defended for UConn...which most likely are passes blocked with his long arms.

Tyronne McKenzie of South Florida is a tackling machine.

Marcus Freeman is too light for a NE LB...but he's worth consideration if BB is still looking for a Hybrid SS/LB - very good change of direction numbers, a pretty decent 10 yd split, his 40 is at the high end, but this kid has been tagged as Ohio State's most complete LB...he always showed up more in games I watched over that "other" kid.

Jonathan Casillas needs to have a good Pro-Day after knee surgery, but he's a speedy coverage Wisconsin LB who projects well to SS.

Kaluka Maieva has measurables similar to Freeman, he comes out of the USC defense so he's seen a variety of challenges, but as a junior leaving early he may not have the same experience as Freeman.

Jason Williams of Western Illinois looked interesting in his All-Star game and was productive in college, we'll learn more after his Pro-Day.

Lee Robinson of Alcorn State tested slower and stiffer than he showed in his All-Star game, a raw product with some straight line speed.

Victor Butler is slow and stiff, but was productive at Oregon and could be moved inside to ret at SILB.

Morty Ivy came to the Combine and weighed in much heavier than people expected, and tested poorly, but this West Virginia kid has a nose for the football.

Johnny Williams (Kentucky), Robert Francois (Boston College), Cody Glenn (Nebraska) are all ILB options to monitor at their Pro-Days.

Dan Skuta is a productive DL out of Grand Valley State who is being looked at as a LB.

Scott McKillop (Pittsburgh) is a tackling machine.

Jasper Brinkley (South Carolina) has been a fan favorite here for a while, I've not been impressed, but he's worth a late round option to try.

Frantz Joseph (Florida Atlantic) is a heavy-legged thumper who just makes plays.

Josh Mauga (Nevada) has 3-4 experience and needs to be monitored at his Pro-Day.

Anthony Felder is a problem for me, he played ILB in California's new 3-4 and despite being squeezed between two more highly rated LBs getting the hype, if you put on tape, he was the rock in the middle who instinctively filled the run lanes, took on OL to plug the holes, and just looked in every way like a NE ILB...except he weighed in at a mere 233. He did lift 225 28 times at the Combine - I just don't know if he can be another Zach Thomas or if he's another kid who'd be better in a 4-3 with DTs to protect him from the pounding.

Britt Miller (Illinois) has size and production, his athleticism seems to be in question, we'll need to monitor his pro-Day.

Kevin Grant (Akron) is another thumper with ILB size who's Pro-Day needs monitoring.

David Veikune was an edge rushing terror for Hawaii and may be a De who is worth trying out inside at LB.

Matt Shaughnessy of Wisconsin was a favorite pass rusher heading into this season, but the post-season analysis and his poor Combine and Pro-Day shows he's hit his ceiling as a DE/OLB type, but I'd like to try him at SILB.

Ian Campbell (Kansas State) is a slow, but quick DE who may be worth a try inside.

Orion Martin was a playmaker for Virginia Tech who tested horribly at the Combine, try him at SILB too.

Styker Sulak of Missouri showed more fluidity in space doing LB drills at the Combine than was expected. He tested fairly well and may be anothe option to try inside.

Julius Williams of UConn is another DE to monitor at his Pro-Day.

Jason Williams ended up shorter and lighter than expected...although he apparently looked fine in the drills. I thinks he's a UFA.

One of the keys to any successful 3-4 defense is having outside linebackers who can pressure the Quarterback and cause havoc in the backfield. Pass rushers are valuable additions to any team, and you can never have enough. The Chargers are blessed to have one of the best pass rushers in the league in Shawne Merriman, but he is coming of a serious knee injury and is in the last year of his contract. The Chargers always position their roster with an eye to the future, and so it comes as no surprise that they've talked with one of the most fearsome pass rushers in this year's draft, Larry English...

I had the good fortune to get a hold of Larry and ask him a few questions:
