The Defense: Why I'm Relatively Optimistic

The only thing is winning.
The loser mentality is show me the flashy names he drafted.
Winning should be enough but for some it isn't.

So, if someone has a bad game against Tampa, Belichick will have a hissy fit and fire someone?

The defense need LOTS of work. If we all recognize that, we will be looking for improvement, not an immediate turnaround.

Personally, I wouldn't have us favored against TB. However, I do think that we have a good chance if Hightower moves back to LB, and Patricia goes to MTM coverages. Obviously, it would help if Rowe were available.

Okay but are you willing to admit winning the division is now 50/50?

Well we have lost 2 games so the entitled fans NEED ANSWERS.
Well, I'd like some answers about that (ahem) "defense." You've got to admit it's been incredibly consistent at being unbelievably bad.

We can all agree the defense sucks.

We can debate if it has enough talent to compete for a championship.

We can debate of it is a coaching issue or a player talent issue.

At this current moment, it is impossible to say if the woes of this team are the doing of the GM or the HC.

IMO, both deserve equal blame. New and old players are not performing to expectations.

I believe it's a matter of (1) serious lack of talent in the front seven and (2) poor communication in the secondary.

Question: anyone else here find it oddly coincidental that recreational marijuana use is legal in Massachusetts and the Patriots' safety play appears to be suffering under position coach Steve Belichick?

I thought the defense would have been fixed by now. Clearly, it hasn't been fixed yet. Last year saw the defense have some struggles as well.

What answers do you want?
They have played poorly. They have talent and the best coaching staff in the NFL and will improve.
Does that do it for you?

Is that the only thing you base being a great GM on?

What about finding the right players for the system? What about UFAs? What about cap management? Trades?

Before throwing darts at BBs draft record, I suggest you look up the draft records of Jim Finks, Ron Wolff, Tex Schramm and Bill Polian and apply your standard the same way.

I didn't say it you did. "Finding incredible talent". Over 17 years, how many incredible talents has he found in the draft?

Leave the finding right players for system, UFAs, cap managements, trades alone...I never once said he struggled in those areas.

How is it a serious lack of talent in the front 7? I agree they could use a player or two but a majority of the defense that led the league in points allowed and won a Super Bowl returned from the previous year.

I think most fans agree that having the best and most talent is the reason team field great defenses. Things like matchups, gameplans, communication and scheme are critical to a defense's success.

Clearly this team is having major problems but I really don't think it's all talent

I get that you're saying people need to have faith in BB and patience a quarter way into the season. Maybe that is all we need and I hope you're right. But I question whether suitable talent is there on the front seven.

Based on their draft position, dozens.

You can look up all the names just as well as I can.

You can also look at he picks he traded to acquire top-level talent.

Thats fine but a GM's job isn't just about drafting players and it seemed that was where you were going with your argument.

I don't think that the front seven lacks talent. HOWEVER, your assertion that the personnel hasn't changed much doesn't make much sense.

On the DL, we are counting on Wise, Guy, Butler, and Marsh. We've even added Hightower to the DL.

As of now, we do have Van Noy, Roberts back at linebacker. However, we've added Harris and Flowers. Do you consider that a major plus? Personally, I'd like to see Hightower back at LB.
