2016: Rookie Jacoby Brissett gets win in 1st NFL start
LeGarrette Blount runs for 104 yards, two touchdowns
Pats crush Houston's vaunted defense in 27-0 shutout

Thursday Sept 22, 2016 at 8:20
Week 3, Game 3 at Gillette Stadium
New England Patriots 27, Houston Texans 0
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Bill O'Brien
QBs: Jacoby Brissett, Brock Osweiler
Odds: even pick'em
Pats improve to 3-0, Texans drop to 2-1

Things did not look good for the Patriots heading into this game. It was bad enough that the Pats were reduced to having to start a third string rookie quarterback. But his having to make his first NFL start against one of the league's premier defenses, that already had nine sacks in two games, and had not allowed a touchdown in the last six quarters? This was going to be too much for the Patriots to overcome. The oddsmakers ruled this a tossup, even with the game was being played in Foxborough. Pats fans did not have much confidence heading into this game.

Another week, another new quarterback, another win for the New England Patriots.

Jacoby Brissett had a 27-yard touchdown run in his first NFL start, LeGarrette Blount added scoring runs of 1 and 41 yards , and the Patriots beat the Houston Texans 27-0 on Thursday night.

It was the Patriots' first shutout win since 2012 and the first time the Texans have been shutout since 2003.

Brissett began the season as the third-string quarterback behind Tom Brady, the franchise cornerstone who is serving a four-game suspension for his role in "Deflategate," and Jimmy Garoppolo - inactive after injuring his right shoulder last week against Miami. Brissett's start on Thursday was the first time that New England had started a rookie quarterback since Drew Bledsoe in 1993.

The Texans (2-1) entered the game with the NFL's third-ranked defense and nine sacks through two games, but they struggled to put pressure on the 23-year-old quarterback.

Brissett was steady throughout, moving the chains on offense with a diet of short passes and scrambles. The Patriots (3-0) also mixed in lots of pre-snap motion and shifts that helped create both throwing and running lanes for Brissett. He finished the night 11 of 19 for 103 yards, and ran eight times for 48 yards.

Houston didn’t help themselves on special teams either, turning the ball over twice on fumbled kickoff returns. Houston quarterback Brock Osweiler was 24 for 41 for 196 yards and was sacked twice. He also had a promising drive in the second quarter thwarted by Jamie Collins’ interception. The Texans had a chance to get on the board just before half-time, but that drive stalled at midfield.

Lamar Miller rushed 22 times for 84 yards.

The suspension of quarterback Tom Brady and an injury to back-up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo aren't slowing down the New England Patriots.

With the third string quarterback Jacoby Brissett leading the offense, the Patriots shut out the Houston Texans in Foxborough Thursday night 27 to 0.

Coaching Clinic on Offense:
Bill Belichick and his staff put on a coaching clinic last night. Offensively, the game plan was to pound the ball, control the clock and keep the Texans off balance with perimeter running plays. The Patriots ran Julian Edelman on the jet-sweep, they ran a reverse with Martellus Bennett and perhaps what was the best call of the night, Jacoby Brissett scored a 27 yard touchdown on a boot keep play. Belichick and his staff totally outclassed former assistants Bill O’Brien and Romeo Crennel and quite frankly they made them look bad.

BLOUNT FORCE: Blount ran 24 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns, including the 41-yarder in the fourth quarter to give New England a 27-0 lead. It's the third time in his career he has had back-to-back 100-yard games, and the first time since 2011. Blount also had a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter.

GRONK RETURNS: Tight end Rob Gronkowski made his season debut after sitting out the first two weeks with a hamstring injury he sustained during training camp. Gronk was used sparingly and mainly as a blocker, appearing in just 14 snaps, and three in the second half.

RUNNING QBS: Brissett's 27-yard touchdown run was the longest for a Patriots quarterback since Steve Grogan went 41 yards for a score in 1976. The longest run of Tom Brady's career is 22 yards.

CHALLENGE: The Patriots' first touchdown was set up by a successful coach's challenge by Bill Belichick. After Stephen Gostkowski's 24-yard field goal put New England up 3-0, Houston's Charles James fielded the ensuing kickoff from just inside the end zone. James ran it out, and was tripped up at the 17. But the ball squirted out on a hit by Brandon Bolden. Duron Harmon recovered for the Patriots, but James ruled down on the field. Belichick challenged, and the call was reversed.

STREAK ENDS: The Texans entered Thursday having not allowed touchdown in six consecutive quarters. That streak ended in the first quarter with Brissett's 27-yard touchdown run.

Live Game Stream:

The defense and special teams controlled the game
The Texans didn’t cross the 50-yard line until under two minutes left in the third quarter. There were a few reasons for that.

The Texans’ special teams decided to cough up the ball twice. You can’t move the ball if you don’t have it. This allowed the Patriots to milk the clock in their opponents’ zone and build a lead.

Special teams weren’t the only group turning the ball over. Brock Osweiler looked overmatched and ended the game with one interception. The Patriots’ produced five pass deflections. Osweiler was forced to make difficult throws, and the Patriots’ pass defense was always in the right place at the right time.

The other reason the Texans couldn’t cross midfield was . . .

Ryan Allen was one of the Patriots’ best weapons
Bill Belichick always talks about three phases of the game. Stephen Gostkowski is the star, but Ryan Allen deserves the accolades after this game.

Allen continually pinned the Texans deep in their own zone. More often than not, they were starting their drives near their own 10-yard line.

He's worse now than he was then

True, but to be fair Brissett's no longer working with:
- an offensive line of Solder - Thuney - Andrews - Mason - Cannon;
- with Gronk and Martellus Bennett at TE;
- Edelman - Hogan - Amendola - Mitchell at WR; and
- Blount - Dion Lewis - James White - James Develin in the backfield.

You can win a SB with that squad.

2019: Brady shreds Jete for 306 yards, 2 TD
Defense allows zero 3rd down conversions, zero points
Stidham gets benched in garbage time for pick-six

Sunday Sept 22, 2019 at 1:00
Week 3, Game 3 at Gillette Stadium
New England Patriots 30, New York Jets 14
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Adam Gase
QBs: Tom Brady, Luke Falk
Odds: Patriots favored by 21
Pats improve to 3-0, Jets drop to 0-3

The defense just absolutely crushed Gang Green, allowing zero points, zero third and fourth down conversions, and just six first downs. The D had five sacks, allowed a mere 105 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers, leading to the Pats controlling the football for plus-ten minutes (35:14 to 24:46). Tom Brady threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns, and Josh Gordon had six catches for 83 yards.

This game may be most remembered for what happened in garbage tiem, after the Patriots built a 30-0 lead with 3:07 still left to play in the third quarter on a Rex Burkhead touchdown run. First Gunner Olszewski muffed a punt on the ensuing drive, which resulted in a Jet recovery for a touchdown. After the defense forced the ninth of ten Jet punts on the day, Jarrett Stidham entered the game. Stidham was sacked for a loss of seven, and two plays later threw a 61-yard pick six with 6:34 to play. Belichick was livid, yanked Stidham, and put Brady back in the game. Maybe BB felt bad for Pats fans who bet on the game, as that score allowed the Jets to cover the spread.

Best
QB Tom Brady
Brady marched the Patriots to three consecutive touchdowns after the opening kick and finished 28 of 42 for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Without top receiving back James White, All-Pro weapon Antonio Brown and later an injured Julian Edelman, Brady still successfully attacked the weak spots of the Jets’ defense and controlled play.
Run defense
Le’Veon Bell was New York’s only avenue to an upset Sunday. He quickly proved to be a dead end. New England stacked Bell up on the ground and rendered him ineffective as a receiver. He averaged 1.9 yards per rush and caught four passes for less than 30 yards.

RB Rex Burkhead
Burkhead led all Patriots with 17 touches Sunday, picking up the slack left behind by James White who missed the game to be with his wife and await the birth of their first child. Burkhead took the majority of snaps in New England’s snaps of one-back personnel and scored New England’s final touchdown.

Worst

WR/PR Gunner Olszewski
Olszewski’s muffed punt late in the third quarter handed New York its first touchdown. He bobbled the ball and then helped push it back across the end zone during his pursuit, which ended when the Jets fell on the pigskin for six points.

QB Jarrett Stidham
Welcome to the NFL, rookie.

Stidham threw a pick-six on the first drive of his pro career, overthrowing Brandon Bolden on a checkdown. The interception sent Stidham back to the bench for the rest of the game.

It was the Patriots’ first game since releasing receiver Antonio Brown. He was cut by the team on Friday after a second woman accused him of sexual misconduct. He spent Sunday morning posting his intention to retire from the N.F.L. and calling out the Patriots’ owner, Robert K. Kraft, and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in messages on his Twitter account.

Obviously, it was a tough week,” safety Duron Harmon said. “A lot of media. A lot of stories. But the only thing we focused on was the Jets, and I thought it showed today.”

Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead each added a rushing touchdown for the Patriots (3-0), who won their seventh straight over the Jets, their American Football Conference rivals, and earned their ninth consecutive regular-season win at home against them.

Phillip Dorsett and Julian Edelman caught touchdown passes from Brady. Edelman left the game with a chest injury with about a minute to play in the first half and did not return. The Super Bowl’s most valuable player in February, Edelman caught a 3-yard pass from Brady, fell on his right side and was sandwiched by Harvey Langi and Henry Anderson. Edelman got up holding his rib area.

Brady was 28 of 42 for 306 yards and headed to the sideline with 8 minutes 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter and New England leading, 30-7. He was briefly replaced by the rookie Jarrett Stidham, who completed his first two passes before having his third intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Jamal Adams. Brady returned the next series.

Le’Veon Bell carried 18 times for just 35 yards. The Jets punted on their first six possessions and crossed into New England’s territory only once in the first half. They punted on 10 of their 13 possessions.

New York didn’t get on the scoreboard until Gunner Olszewski muffed a punt late in the third quarter and it was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Arthur Maulet.

The Patriots were also limited in the running game without James White. He missed the game to be with his expectant wife.

But New England still scored on each of its first three possessions, building a 20-0 halftime lead. Michel scored the game’s first touchdown, running it from 5 yards to cap a nine-play, 88-yard drive.

Brady and his offense then took to the air, spreading out New York’s secondary with multiple four-receiver formations. Dorsett had a 25-yard touchdown reception and Edelman caught another score from 3 yards early in the second quarter. Edelman capped the score with an emphatic spike of the ball, a throwback to the celebration of choice by the retired Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.
