The Atheist Experience

Don't they set up The Atheist Experience right before the Super Bowl every year...?

Okay sorry, as you were.

You're not going to win over too many converts with a fat guy in a jester's cap.

Hey that's what they said about the skinny hippie in sandals too... give 'em a couple thousand years...

I thought they were entertaining. When the guy asked about unicorns in the first one I cracked up.

If you haven't checked out Bill Maher's movie Religulous you should. He picks on Christianity for the most part so I wouldn't mind a sequel where he goes into some of the other religions but some of the people he interviews make your jaw drop. Even if you're a person of faith you would have to watch this documentary and say yes this person is only into Jesus for one reason; the money. A few others, including one US senator, also were entertaining because of how stupid they were.

Maher puts a fair amount of energy into Judaism as well, and touches on Islam intermittently. He explains the literal account of the resurrection - in the Jewish tradition, Jews get up out of their graves, and roll (physically) toward Jerusalem. Now, this is one precept of Orthodoxy that I "pick and choose" my beliefs about... yes, I am an organ donor. I really don't think I'm getting out of a grave and rolling toward Jerusalem after my death.

But back in the day, they did. So did the Muslims who were in control of Jerusalem during the middle ages.

This presented an engineering challenge, but they were up to the task. As the scripture was very precise about the gate through which the Jews would come "rolling in," the Muslims were sure to securely seal off that particular gate with a great deal of stonework.

I don't care who you are, that's just funny.

Most of the people he interviewed were of the Christian faith though. Probably because it's the lowest hanging fruit.

That is really funny. The Jehovah Witnesses have similar beliefs.

So the idea is that you can't donate organs because you need them for the afterlife?

That's interesting on a host of levels.

Oh, let's not be so bloody smug about it. Religion's older than science, and what we currently call "reason" is a relatively recent invention. It use to make perfect sense to posit that you would literally rise from the grave, roll down a hill, and build God's City from which your people would rightfully shine as a light unto the nations.

So yes, by the Orthodox narrative, I will indeed need my organs come the resurrection. There is evidently a sub-clause somewhere stating that soft tissue that gets harvested by medical professionals will not be replaced, but soft tissue harvested by a progression of worms, insects, and bacteria will be.

I actually like bringing this one up. It makes people stop complaining about dietary laws (which are similarly not central to my understanding of my faith )
