The 2013 Prospect Thread

Also the LSU/Alabama game has two of the best Free Safeties in the country: Robert Lester (Alabama) & Eric Reid (LSU).

And two outstanding OCs: Barrett Jones (Alabama) & PJ Lonergan (LSU).

and two outstanding DE's: Montgomery and Mingo

and two outstanding RB's: Lacy and Yeldon

for as inept as mccarron looked for much of that game...he was fantastic on that final drive.

and two outstanding DT: logan and williams

and two outstanding ILB: minter and mosley

an outstanding corner: millner

two outstanding OT: fluker and kouandjio

an outstanding guard: warmack

and the best blocking TE i have ever seen in michael williams...

these two teams are so loaded with talent for years...

1. Does anyone else think like me that Zach Mettenberger could be the first QB taken in next years draft? I thought he really showed the promise that he was getting hyped with at the start of the year. Has a very good arm and was throwing some lovely passes, particularly in the 4th quarter.

2. I wonder if Montgomery and Mingo go back for their senior years. If Mettenberger is that good, LSU have a real chance at the NC (they're a youngish team) and both DE's have not produced all that well statistically this year. Montgomery's stock in particular seems to be slowly slipping.

3. AJ McCarron is not a 1st round QB. He has the potential to be a really good system QB and I'd still like him for the Pats but he looked very ordinary last night.

4. TJ Yeldon. Wow!!!

All QBs have off games where they don't look good, the big question is how high his ceiling is in the right system.

doubtful. he's looked pretty terrible all year until last night.

Not that he has to, but he rarely wins games on with his passing. He's a game manager with upside. But I don't see him as the type of QB an NFL team would rest their hopes on to win a game for them (yet) and that's the type of QB that gets taken in the first round (especially high first round).

Which is why I talked about promise. It is his first year in the system as a starter ( a system not conducive with successful QB play). He showed really nice touch, a strong arm and the ability to thread the needle last night. Look how many times he completed passes to receivers covered by Milliner. And Milliner had good coverage on almost all of them. Another year in the system, another year where his coaching staff rely on him more and another year with a pretty good WR prospect in Odell Beckham developing and I think he's a genuine candidate.

Lots of board favorites on Tony Pauline's latest list of risers:

Markus Wheaton/WR/Oregon State: Wheaton is in the midst of a terrific season and has impressed scouts every week. He's on pace for career numbers and his six touchdown receptions this year tops his cumulative total from the prior three seasons. Wheaton has the build to be a No. 2 receiver at the next level and his reported 40 speed of 4.4-seconds enhances his value. The senior entered the season with last day draft grades, but has since moved into the middle rounds.

Matt Elam*/S/Florida: The junior safety continues to impress scouts and he stood out during the Gators' close victory over Missouri. Elam does a terrific job patrolling centerfield, aggressively defending the run while capitalizing on mistakes made by opposing quarterbacks. He's a multi-dimensional safety with the ability to make plays sideline-to-sideline against the run and pass.

Barrett Jones/C/Alabama: Jones has made the seamless transition from left tackle to center this season and now ranks as one of the best pivot blockers moving towards the draft. He's not very athletic, but he's smart, tough and fundamentally sound. Jones rarely makes mental mistakes and always finds a way to disrupt defenders protecting the passer or blocking for the run.

Terrance Williams/WR/Baylor: The Bears' passing attack was expected to take a step back after the departure of quarterback Robert Griffin III and receiver Kendall Wright. Williams has filled the void at the receiver spot this season and has climbed draft boards. He's posted at least 100 yards receiving in seven of eight games thus far and is averaging 20.1 yards on 60 receptions. Williams has surprised scouts with his deep speed and ability to stretch the field vertically. He entered the 2012 season graded as a seventh-round pick, but Williams now projects as a top 60 choice.

Markus Wheaton rises, Josh Boyd slides in NFL draft Week 10 ratings - Tony Pauline - SI.com

Sounds like Pauline has been reading this thread.

Also of interest for Pauline's article:

Scouts are excited yet at the same time concerned about Oregon's Dion Jordan. The senior has taken his game to another level this season, expanding his skills on the field and effectively handling a variety of roles. Jordan has been a forceful and disciplined defender and plays within himself. He's also been suffering from a shoulder injury which has forced an early exit from the past two games. If healthy, Jordan could end up a top 60 choice, but his shoulder will be thoroughly examined at the Senior Bowl.

I smell a Pats-like opportunity here. I've backed off Jordan some because his stock has shot up, but if shoulder concerns drop him back, I'm very, very interested.

BB likes to double dip each draft and WR seems like the No1 position right now to do it with (although with only three premium picks, that's less likely). It's not my preferred mock but if we came out of draft day with:

1. Terrance Williams

2. Matt Elam

3. Markus Wheaton

I'd take that.

The OL is doing alright for the time being, signing Talib to a long term contract and having McCourty-Dennard-Talib-Dowling as a CB foursome sounds pretty good and they can target OL and DL in next years draft (or FA).

And then we can have the Double-K brothers in the seventh round (Kasa-Kelce).

Put me in the Matt Elam - S - Florida Camp. I've seen enough. He'll probably go before we pick, and we don't have a lot of picks to trade up with. He's quck enough to make plays on the balls in the air and has great instincts when to come up to force the run. And get this, he's a special demons too. Belichick probably gets a warm, fuzzy feeling watching the kid.

You can never have enough "Special Demons"

As Homer Simpson might say; "DOH!" Special Teams Demon. Mind is quicker than the fingers this morning. LOL

Matt Elam is only a junior. I can see him coming back to UF for one more year. Florida's program is only getting better. He will have a legit chance at a National Championship and will improve his draft stock and be a top 10 pick if he stays. His brother is a veteran NFL safety and I have heard that if Matt stays, big bro will give him 80K for his senior year.

Junior DT Shariff Floyd is gone after this year.

Junior DT Dominique Easley just had his first son. He's gone.

TE Jordan Reed really needs to stay. He is not at all ready for the NFL.

The two DT's are beasts. I hope we get one of them.

Elam has already said he's leaving. I like him as the #1 safety, higher than Reid and McDonald.
