Draftinsider's defensive rankings:

2013 NFL Draft Rankings: Defense

Among the rankings of interest:

- William Campbell projected as a 4th round value
- Cooper Taylor listed as a 7th round/UDFA
- Tony Jefferson listed as a 4th round value

Datone Jones and Maliciah Goodman would be interesting options in the 3rd.

Agreed, though personally I've gone "all in" on the Armond Armstead bandwagon.

Has there been any news on that front?

Zilch. I've been scanning the net like a hawk. Armstead is my "first 1st round binky" for the Pats - I would view signing him like getting a free 1st round draft pick. It was rumored that he would sign this week, but not a peep. No rumors of any visits with other teams, other than the Pats, Eagles and Colts.

I'm hoping that the lack of news may be a sign that something's in the works with the Pats, and that they don't want to distract from their AFCCG preparations by making an announcement at this time. I was worried when Philly landed Chip Kelly, since Kelly recruited Armond's younger brother Arik to Oregon and obviously has dealt with the family - though that could work against him too, since he ran out on Arik after the kid's freshman season.

Either way, I'm holding my breath. Sign Armstead, and I'm all for going after Jonathan Cooper in the 1st round, or a space player like Alec Ogletree, or trading back or into 2014. I think Armstead would have a bigger impact even than Ziggy Ansah, as a guy who can play both inside and out, in 3-4 and 4-3 schemes.

Wow!

Can he be signed to a long-term contract before the new NFL season starts or does that only apply to FA's currently on an NFL team?

Just watched him a little. He's impressive and a real nice fit. I don't think he has Ziggy's upside but looks more ready. Sign him, draft Kapron Lewis-Moore and switch back to the 3-4 in 2014-15.

I'd rank him behind Ansah personally but I'd put him ahead of my other DL favourite, Tank Carradine. Illness aside, he definitely looks like a first rounder though. Good call.

I'm not sure he has quite the upside of Ansah, but he's much further along, and has much more power to his game. I think he could fit in both 4-3 and 3-4 schemes at DE, and also move inside at DT in a 4-3. I think of him along the lines of a Margus Hunt, but 3 years young and much more technically developed and experienced - not quite as tall, but with better lateral mobility. He's proven that he has the will to persevere when no one would give him a shot, and he's handled the rigors being on his own and of dealing with a pro season, albeit in the CFL, which is still quite different from college. I think he'll contribute immediately, and be an impact player within a year. So I'm holding my breath that the Pats don't get outbid for him.

Just started watching the East West Shrine game. David Bass is in it. Look out

Hester and Price have looked good. Hester has had 2 unnecessary pass interferences, but no one has created the slightest bit of separation from him.

I'm very intrigued by this kid, a possible UFA CornerBack from Planet Hoosten.

CB DJ Hayden ~ Planet Hoosten ~ 6.0/190

D.J. Hayden | Houston, CB : 2013 NFL Draft Scout Player Profile

UH football star makes comeback after injury | News - Home

Of note:

1 ~ Suffered an extremely rare Injury in Practice, this Autumn, one with a 95% Mortality Rate.

2 ~ Came back to have one Hell of a fine Season, though he is still recovering his Weight.

3 ~ Prior to'is injury, just 45 of 362 pass attempts (12.4%!!) went Hayden's way.

4 ~ Of the 45, just 11 were completed!!

I haven't had a chance to look at Tape, yet, but my GOD, this is an intriguing Story.

Final thoughts from the game: Bass looked solid. If he is 260lbs (his listed weight on the website), then he's 5% body fat at the most. He has really loose hips and he uses his hands well. His strength is solid. His hand usage is great. However, he lacks straight line closing burst to finish sacks, and he has a mediocre feel for the game against the run.

Jahleel Addae, Devin Taylor, and Aaron Hester had really good games. Addae was all over the field. Taylor couldn't be stopped. Hester had two dumb, unnecessary pass interferences (needs a feel for NFL rules), but no one got a step on him, ever, to say the least.

Terron Armstead at 144
Quinton Patton at 101
Da'rick Rogers at 110
Markus Wheaton at 119
John simon at 123 are all very nice id take anyone out of those guys with our 3rd rounder my choice would be

1. Patton
2. John Simon
3. Da'rick Rogers
4. Markus Wheaton
5. Terron Armstead

Also some of his rankings seem kinda off compared to other rankings i would say

OK, I might have found someone interesting.

Tristan Okpalaugo, DE/OLB, Fresno State

6'5", 246lbs, 35" arms Senior

Long and lean with plenty of frame to add weight. Poor mans Dion Jordan. Drops into coverage, not a polished pass rusher but looks pretty athletic. He's ranked #575 at NFLDraftScout. But watch the video. Look at how good he is at using his length to set the edge (in particular the play at 1:37 which is outstanding).

A couple of examples of his athleticism:

Tulsa vs. Fresno State Highlights: Tristan Okpalaugo (88) OLB Fresno State Bulldogs - YouTube

And him at the Casino Del Sol All-Star game

It's his ability to to use his length in setting the edge that struck me, aside from that he's pretty raw. I'd be tempted if I was a 3-4 team and was looking for some late round value. I wouldn't be disappointed if we stashed him on the PS either. Intriguing upside.

I thought his arms were actually longer than that. Someone on twitter said 36.5.

I've been watching Zac Dysert and I've fallen a little in love. More than any QB I've seen in CFB (and that includes McCarron), Dysert is the most Brady-esque QB I've seen. (Edit - I still like Bridgewater but think Dysert can be as good).

He extends plays with his feet, doesn't get flustered under pressure, makes all the throws, reads the whole field and has an accurate short game. He's not quite ready to start straightaway which we obviously don't need, but a year or two with a dedicated NFL QB coach and I think he can become a really good QB, ideal for our system.

The Mallett to Cleveland scenario would be ideal because we could get Dysert and another first round talent but I'd use our first on him regardless if Brady won't be extending/extended past 2014.

Love him as a prospect.

Edit: Just realised that Mackenzie did a scouting report on him. Once again, we agree on a prospect (except I put a late first value on him rather than Top 20).
