The 2013 Prospect Thread

Sleeper alert! Many people thought Terrence Brown was an idiot for entering the draft even though he is a late round prospect. He's not an idiot. Because, according to my film, he got a 2nd round grade from the NFL draft advisory committee.

Interesting. Brown whas been on my late round CB sleeper list. But are you suggesting that you grade him as a 2nd round pick, or that you believe the NFL draft advisory committee would have done similarly, or that you have actual information that they did so? I'm a bit confused.

I got plenty of Faulk film from sophomore year. He's a good athlete with long arms, he is very good as a pass blocker, and he creates a wide base, but he plays with average on field intensity, has poor on field awareness, poor balance, not fluid, and he is mistake prone as a run blocker.

Yeah but I feel it's important to watch the latest film possible. North Texas might not challenge him though. I still have the NC game around here somewhere.

I need to say, Winters has a terrible build

For a tackle?

What I am saying is that he could be a Linval Joseph style sleeper. As you may remember, after entering the draft, East Carolina defensive tackle Linval Joseph was considered a "5th round prospect" by the media. CBSSports, Todd McShay, etc. No one had ever heard of him and assumed he was insignificant (I didn't, BTW). But, on draft day, scouts told the media he's a late first or second round prospect. His stock "rose out of nowhere" and, in their final mocks, all of a sudden, Joseph was a late first to early second round prospect. First of all, this is a great indicator of how stupid media scouts are. It's not like Todd McShay's opinion of Joseph radically changed overnight. If he actually had watched film and had convictions that Linval Joseph really was a late round prospect, he wouldn't have changed his board so dramatically the day of the draft. He does whatever scouts say and doesn't have a mind of his own. Secondly, it shows that the media can be wrong about certain juniors. Frankly, before he declared for the draft, I didn't know who Terrence Brown was. That's because I don't have the time nor do I want to waste my time scouting every player in college football, even if there is no reason to believe they will enter the draft or be drafted (of course, now that he has entered the draft, I am scouting Brown). But the thing is, the most anyone in the media knows about him prior to him entering the draft is his height, weight, and 40 yard dash. They assumed he is a late round prospect, and they're not willing to confirm their assumption by watching his film. And, watching a bit of his film, Brown looks awesome. The media doesn't know, but I think the scouts do. And, for that reason, he will be picked ahead of where the media thinks he'll get drafted. I have no concrete information about what the NFL draft advisory committee said. But, considering the job of the people at the committee is to watch film, assuming they did so, I believe Brown got 4th round grade at the worst, an early 2nd round grade at best.

It's his body fat. He has a ton. No muscle at all.

To be frank, muscle is denser than fat. Therefore, a player with a low body fat percentage is going to look skinny for someone his size (Barkevious Mingo), while a player with a high body fat percentage will look out of shape and disgusting (John Jenkins). Brian Winters has the same body of D.J. Fluker. And that's not an exaggeration.

Another sleeper: it is beyond me as to why Michael Ford didn't get more carries in college. But he looks like Robert Turbin, except he's useless on passing downs

Build aside, what do you think of his play?

I got on Brown's bandwagon too quickly. Struggled against Oregon State

mackenzie i saw gilbert pena in the bowl game they played in and he looked really good. Nice story as well didnt go to college to help his mom with cancer. he'll be 26 his rookie season i think but id definitely take a chance on him

Kwame Geathers has no anchor at all. I was amazed at how far he got pushed back on play after play against GT. 4-5 yards on almost every play. One of the worst tapes I've seen all year I'm afraid. Admittedly he's better when trying to get upfield, but as a NT, no thanks.

I completely agree, I watched the GT game a few days ago and saw the exact same thing. I think he is simply too tall to play NT. As soon as a C or G gets underneath him he is easily knocked back off the line. I think he would be better off as a two-gap 3-4 DE where he can use his length against OT's, but I don't think he has the athleticism for that. He's one of those guys that sounds great in theory (6'5" 350lbs) but never really translates it to the field.

The other guy that disappointed me was Sharrif Floyd from Florida. He is quick up the field and he can penetrate, but he can't play the run at all. I turned off the Tennessee game after about 5 or 6 plays because he was consistently blown off the ball. He was better in the Fla St game, but still not enough to impress me as a run defender. I wouldn't draft him before the 4th round and that would be as a sub rusher only.

I also have mixed feelings about Kawann Short from Purdue. I like his skill set, I just want to see some more intensity and aggression out of him. I got the feeling his motor runs a little hot and cold. If he could maintain some consistency with his intensity I think he will be a very good DT.

2013 NFL Draft: USC loses CB Nickell Robey to NFL - CBSSports

Nickell Robey is a guy that really intrigues me. He's tiny (5'8", 165), but he's a sub-4.4 guy, a successful long-jumper, three-year starter, and sounds like a high-character guy that is going pro to help his family, especially after the loss of his mother a few years ago.

He got a day 3 projection, but he's not going to get any taller over the next year and he's got a family to support, so it makes sense. I'd be awfully tempted at the end of the third or maybe early fourth if the Pats gain a pick there.

So essentially he's a cross between Jeff Demps and Tyrann Mathieu (without the off-field issues)?

So I presume we'd be looking at him as a "Nickell" back?

Worst...Post...EVER!!!

This isn't a direct reply to Mankenzie's last post but I just wanted to say that this TE class is outstanding. I would be delighted if we drafted either Travis Kelce or Nick Kasa, even as high as the 2nd round. I know there's no desperate need, but those two guys will be outstanding NFL TE's as far as I'm concerned. Kasa has superb athleticism for a man his size and he's only been playing the position for a year. He's already been promoted from the Shrine game to the Senior Bowl and will continue to rise fast and I'll eat something foul if Kelce is drafted later than the 3rd round.

Seeing how Gronk will be injured from 25-50% of the season I think it makes sense for us to have another playmaking TE.

Agreed. Dion Sims is good too

William Campbell is definitely intriguing. Insisted on playing point guard in BB games with his teammates.
He's the closest to Hicks IMO, but he lacks the same ferocity.

For those that don't know, Campbell was a highly recruited 5 star prospect from 2009 that never really developed until last year when a new defensive coordinator was hired. He's still raw and could bust, but he has enormous potential. He's about 6'5" 310.
Yeah, Campbell is intriguing. His frame could allow him to get in the 320 range, and he could be a something in-between a Hicks and Brockers stylistically. While he was largely a bust before this year, a couple of thoughts:

- He pretty much admitted he was a bust and took responsibility. That's something. Some kids never do, and he may just be a late maturing guy.
- Michigan moved him to OL for most of one season (I think it was 2010, IIRC), which may have ******ed his development. The fact that he agreed to make the switch says something about his attitude.

As a late round/UDFA guy, he's intriguing, as is Brandon Moore.

Campbell volunteered to be the replacement long snapper for the West in the Shrine Game.
