Thank you Giants

See, this is why other users call you an idiot.

Why would anyone be scared of a Reid-Smith tandem in January? Seriously?. Steelers are a talented team.

Because we are a better matchup for KC than for the Steelers. And by better I dont mean that KC is better than us but they can give us more issues than what the Steelers will be able to.

I dont get why you are going ahead with the lol Reid/Smith in January narrative but then at the same time reject the similarly insightful* Brady owns the Steelers narrative.

Because Reid and Smith can't get out of their own way in January. The Steelers D is much improved since last season.

You are just randomly trusting one narrative over another just because of whatever.

I am sure if the Ravens end up in the sixth seed I can count on you to say you wanna avoid the garbage fire of a team because they always play the Patriots hard as if any of what happened in the past matters at all (hint, it doesnt).

The way I see it there are three significant layers of post season participants.

1.) The #1 seed in each conference. Obviously the best scenario.

2.) A top 2 seed in each conference to get a bye. A bye week vs non bye week is ENORMOUS even if the non by week team is playing a cupcake.

3.) All others (qualifying).

While we strive for the number one seed, the difference between Wild Card vs Bye Team is greater than Bye team vs #1 team. While the Steelers may ultimately be the primary competition for the #1 seed, the KC loss to the Giants was huge (in my opinion) because it helps us trying to lock up a bye.

but yes, something just felt 'wrong' and 'weird' about rooting for the Giants

Actually I think the Patriots would destroy the Ravens this season. Nonetheless, I don't foresee KC doing much of anything in January. Ultimately it will ( imo) be the Steelers and Patriots. Where? That's to be determined.

My question is now if the Patriots drop 1 game but beat Pitt do they get the first round bye for sure if the Jags also win out?

All I'm saying is, we can't use how we've had a tough time against the ratbirds in the past. What has happened 2012 and earlier is not related.

There's no reason to worry about the team being trouble for us if they make the playoffs more than other teams that makes the playoffs. I haven't really watched the ratbirds this season so I don't know where they're strong. But what I do know is, Joe Flacco has been complete garbage.

What happened prior to 2012 should be dismissed, but I wouldn't be so quick to ignore the last 2 games in the past 3 years. We haven't played them yet, but then again, we haven't played the Steelers, and half this thread is worried about that game. And my original post was to someone who was hoping the Ravens took care of the Steelers for us for some strange reason.

There are obviously differences, but there are similarities too, and in terms of mental toughness, the Steelers under Tomlin have always lacked it, while the Ravens will not be intimidated. The Steelers are much more talented, no doubt, but I wouldn't go out of my way to try and avoid them like some are hoping for. I would not put them as our #1 competition towards another SB.

Whether things play out as you anticipate, or not, your line of "reasoning" is awful.

Yes, a 13-3 record beats a 12-4 record.

If the Jags win out, they’ll finish at 13-3; hence the question of whether our 13-3 would their 13-3.

Assuming the Patriots unfortunately lose to Pitt but otherwise win the other 5 while the Jags win their remaining 6.

Conf record - 2 losses each - Equal
Common Opponents - Jets (advantage Patriots), Pitt(advantage Jags), Texans(=), Chargers(=), - Equal

The answer to this scenario is Strength of Victory tie break. While that won't be determined until near the end of the season (we could end up rooting for the oddest outcomes in week 17), the Jags wins include Cleveland and the 49ers. 2 victories that probably won't be worth more than SOV of 2. That should tilt it a bit toward the Patriots favorably. I think if the Titans start tanking it would give a better tilt. But how precisely SOV plays out is ???

Of course one other interesting scenario: Patriots beat Pitt while all 3 teams (Jags, Pitt, Patriots) win all their remaining games:
Patriots #1
Jags #2
Steelers #3
KC#4 (assuming KC doesn't tank so bad the Chargers overtake them)

Assuming Pitt wins their WC round game against the Ravens (I'm guessing it is the Ravens and I'd assume Pitt will beat them), AFCD Weekend:
Steelers @ Jags
______ @ Patriots (IMHO likely KC but given how bad KC is now playing there is a fair but outside shot at it being the Titans)

That's a pretty sweet AFCD matchup for the Patriots either way -- while the Jags and Steelers beat the defensive crap out of each other before one of them has to come to Foxboro (a Pitt team that has been pretty bad against the Patriots in Foxboro or a warmer weather team Jags with little PO experience and questionable offensive prowess).
That's a pretty optimal scenario if it plays out that way (though 3 teams going 6-0, 6-0, 5-1 in their last 6 seems wildly unlikely).

What a perfect beautiful outcome this would be!
