Carr....90/1247/12 in the Big 10 last year....and what 7 WRs from the Big 10 were drafted before him? I know he's not a vertical threat and wasn't great vs press but....

vs OSU 8/158
vs Wisc 12/132/1
vs Neb 8/109/1
vs Duke 6/135
vs MSU 11/130/2

This kid can be a diamond in the rough

Because he is not considered athletic by NFL standards. More of a effort player. I think that catch he made in the preseason was very athletic, but apparently most scouts thought Carr lacked athleticism, and wasn't twitchy enough in his cuts to be able to gain separation in the NFL

Exactly NG that's been the case for many Slot WR's in this League. They don't initially come with good credentials but they find a way to play for Ten years in this league ie...WW and now JE. I think Carr needs a year on a PS just to learn the nuances and stuff I don't think he will be as coveted as some think.

D.J. Foster in the competition as a replacement for Julian Edelman

Nice piece on D.J. Foster here here about him possibly playing in the Slot. The Pats love to Maximize what a player does best with Foster versatility you can use him in the Backfield and Slot dual threat you might say. You have to think he's more further along than Carr and have more value to add to the Team. As we all know in the Game of Football injuries most times presents an opportunity for some players.

Well Reiss thinks Carr (and Lucien) won't make the rosters and will survive waivers and end up on practice squad. Not to dampen your enthusiasm.

Moving nearly 8,000-pound sign was Patriots' Super offseason story

5a. One popular question on social media has been which player might "benefit" from the Edelman injury and possibly earn a roster spot, with undrafted receiver Austin Carr and 2016 seventh-round pick Devin Lucien coming up most in discussion. My hunch is that both of those players are more likely to be practice-squad considerations and that if the Patriots do plan to add another receiver on top of Hogan, Brandin Cooks, Danny Amendola, Malcolm Mitchell(assuming good health) and Matthew Slater, it is more likely to come from outside the organization.

It's a scary thought...I don't think he past waivers if we let him go...guy showed great route running for a 6'1-6'2 guy

Mike Reiss = Young Wrong Borges??? I guess if you throw crap at the wall as many times something gotta stick.

I think Devin Lucien would be most likely picked up he has a year of seasoning on a NFL PS he is also listed as a Outside WR I think that carries more weight. I will watch Carr's route running more Thursday night.

I will add other than maybe the Jets and a few other Teams. For most part the Majority of Teams are stacked at WR. Also if Carr and Lucien were CB's the answer would be without question.

Can you post 3-4 examples of this great route running you have seen ? At least the times in the games so I can actually see that on gamepass ?

Can't go deep or do much damage outside
Can't get away from press in short spaces
Can't separate from quality defenders, overall

He's the perfect example of a high end college guy who's skill set makes him undrafted. That doesn't mean that, theoretically, he can't hone his craft and become a quality player in the league, but this guy's not at the Welker level, and Welker went undrafted, too.

What is it with those weird Reiss takes this summer ? He is among the best journalists on the beat.

There is a tendency to lump all journalists together, a broad brush so to speak... he is one of the best and most "loyal" Patriot Reporters, when he is wrong he admits he is wrong..

OTOH on the other side the list is long and with a bunch of sore ass has beens..

For everyone's future reference.

Carr's athletic testing numbers are not "out-of-range" on this list, by any measure.

Obviously, not every guy who tests well consistently matches his numbers on the field, thus failing the eyeball test. I think that's because some guys don't instinctively know how to consistently maximize whatever athleticism they have during actual play. That may be due to a lack of confidence about what to do, or a lack of anticipation/ability to "read" the field, leading to slight hesitations. It may also be due to poor technique/footwork. Those are things that can be coached up to help a player better access and optimize their athleticism during game play. As BB noted a couple of weeks ago, that often involves breaking a guy of his bad technique/habits first.

However, not every player can absorb enough coaching, by the deadline, to make a significant difference, no matter how hard they work at it. But that goes both ways. Not every coach/teacher is able to get through to every player/student to generate enough progress by the deadline, or at all.

BTW - It may be worth noting that Edelman was a college QB who never returned a punt and rarely caught a pass.

Foster was a very good receiving RB who was moved to slot WR during his senior season in college.

Hogan was a lacrosse star who played one season of college football as both a DB (28 tackles, 3 INTs) and WR.

He's not gonna make past waivers, book it.

Unfortunately, there was no room for him before, now with Jules unfortunate injury, there is a roster spot for him. He's been catching passes and TDs in practice and pre season games, give the kid a chance, as a 5th WR he is not going to see the field a lot. We don't know if he is for real or not, what we know is that Jules and Danny are old and breaking down so we need to start evaluating candidates for taking these spots, we know how this offense relies on a good slot receiver.
