Stephen Gostkowski expected to be franchise tagged

I don't get needing to franchise Gosk.

What's the figure? Can't they work out a contract at that rate?

This is not how it works. Unless Ghost is in a giving mood he will not sign anything before FA opens. That would be absolutely idiotic if you want to maximize your income.

Now if he hits FA there will be dozens of teams ready to sign him which would create a bidding war to the point where there is real danger of losing him.

Franchising him is the ideal solution. It is not a big amount that hits the cap when he signs the tender, you keep him from the open market and then can use the rest of the summer to negotiate a long term deal when most other teams have less money / already filled the position thereby minimizing his leverage.

There really is zero downside to do that and imo the absolute perfect way to use the tag.

No, the reason to do it is to prevent a desperate team (*cough* Bears *cough*) from offering a contract they can't match.

Unless he gets tired of playing, I see no reason to think that Gostkowski won't be challenging Vinatieri's scoring record.
From the way he talks I don't think he's playing until 45.

I wasn't clear.

If he isn't tagged, it is because he is ready to sign a 2 or 3 year contract.
Or the patriots don’t believe he is worth the tag price and will either offer lower money or move on.
