Peter Gabriel was more theatrical performing to the point that all the media could talk about was his costumes and props. The rest of the band was over shadowed. Collins said that "You don't need to mesmerize people" after moving from drums to lead singer taking a swipe at Gabriel. I don't really know who wrote the songs, but they were all very long and esoteric. Genesis shows were like going to a play.

When Collins first took over right around "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" period, the music did not change that much. Material on later albums did, but would the music have changed anyway with Gabriel still there? I think yes. Peter Gabriel solo songs evolved through time just like Genesis's work did too. I would argue that Genesis became more popular with Collins at lead. But, Gabriel became popular as well because he had the freedom as a solo artist to do what he wanted to do...

Interesting Genesis tidbit, in case you didn't know already, is that their first American gig was at Brandeis University right here in Waltham MA... Not that I went or anything, being like 12 years old at the time; but one of the advantages of attending Boston Latin is that you heard about bands that the much older kids were listening to that you might not have heard-about that soon if you had gone to a normal junior high school back then...

I didn't think Seattle is overtly MAGA. Isn't Ave Maria and YMCA the songs the right grooves to?
I think of Seattle as more liberal.

The Cars first relatively large show was at Pease Air Force base. They were broke and not known at all playing bars and small clubs around Boston.

The band sent a demo song (IIRC, a vinyl .45) to WBCN who played it and the phone lines lit up like a Christmas tree. That's how the Cars were discovered.

Got to see them open their tour in Casper Wyoming in 95 and then a few shows later….Red Rocks in Colorado….Fing incredible
