I grew up with Van Halen's self titled album as my first record (yes, an actual record).
Fell in love with Eddie's hard driving guitar and solos.
Van Haggar is fine, but you're right, it's two different groups with much different sounds.
I give them lots of credit, their switch in sound made them stay relevant while guitar rock was fading away.
Sold a **** ton of Albums with Sammy.
Some good songs, I just preferred the original sound.
Have every VH album with DLR, zero with Sammy.

Most bands that replace their singer like Genesis and Van Halen become different bands than they were before. The music is different. Peter Gabriel led Genesis is radically different than Phil Collins led Genesis. I mean different genres different.

I would argue that AC/DC may be the only band that changed lead singers and were successful while pretty much doing the same music. The music on an album like Highway to Hell is pretty much the same type of music that is on Back in Black.

Just to throw a nugget in there, AC/DC had nearly completed writing the Back In Black album before Bon Scott passed. I would have loved to hear him sing on that album. I heard there were demoes with Scott from that album.

As someone who grew up with Van Halen, Van Haggar was not even remotely close to Van Halen with DLR.
They had great commercial success with Sammy as they went more main stream/softer with their music. Great for them, bad for the original VH fans.

Peter Gabriel was more theatrical performing to the point that all the media could talk about was his costumes and props. The rest of the band was over shadowed. Collins said that "You don't need to mesmerize people" after moving from drums to lead singer taking a swipe at Gabriel. I don't really know who wrote the songs, but they were all very long and esoteric. Genesis shows were like going to a play.

When Collins first took over right around "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" period, the music did not change that much. Material on later albums did, but would the music have changed anyway with Gabriel still there? I think yes. Peter Gabriel solo songs evolved through time just like Genesis's work did too. I would argue that Genesis became more popular with Collins at lead. But, Gabriel became popular as well because he had the freedom as a solo artist to do what he wanted to do.

I have a hard time thinking of Soundgarden without Cornell's vocals.
Maybe it will be great, but Soundgarden without Chris is just a cover band playing their songs.

I agree with this. But I saw them at the Rock & Roll hall of fame induction, and Momsen really did a great job. I was pleasantly surprised. I’m a huge Soundgarden fan, and I guess she’s a good choice if they are gonna tour or play selected live shows.

But it was Eddie and Chris' singing that made it what it was.
Now someone could probably sing Eddie's part of Hunger Strike, but there's not many humans that could sing Chris' part and do it justice.

I think I really do a good job screaching “Going Hungry” but I guess I’m just delusional, as witnessed by my neighbors complaints.
