Get the red jacket ready (Pats HOF). Felicitazione, Dante!

Yep. Because the O-line got the flu for the first SB against the Giants. And in the 2nd one, it was clearly the O-line's fault for the receivers having the case of the dropsies (Welker x2, Branch, Hernandez) in critical situations..

OH, btw, it was Koppen who choked the bone against the Ravens and allowed the first strip sack by Ray Lewis.. But, yeah, blame the ENTIRE o-line. Just like we should blame the entire O-line for Wendell not picking up the twists and stunts by Knighton.

If having a weak, underpowered center keeps booting you out of the playoffs, it's up to the coaches to make changes.

I disagree about the dropsies. Brady was pressured that game. Maybe not as dramatically as in 07, but it was still a major factor.

My first guess at this is that Daboll is a candidate to fill the TE coach position if Godsey leaves as it has been reported is somewhere in the range from possible to likely to unofficially complete. It appeared Godsey was going to leave his offensive assistant role to follow O'Brien to Penn State in 2012, but his promotion to TE coach changed that. Now that O'Brien has gone to Houston, the Pats can't really give him a clear promotion over what he'd get in Houston, especially if he's an OC candidate as at least one report has said. They do have the ability to block him from going to Houston, but that's not the kind of thing you do with a TE coach if he's about to become an OC.

At a very fundamental level, tight ends have to sometimes act as wide receivers and sometimes act as offensive linemen, and Daboll was the Pats' WR coach from 2002 to 2006 and worked closely with the OL last season. It may have been a case where the plan was for Daboll to replace Scarnecchia, but if the team found out that Godsey is leaving, then that Belichick decided that DeGuglielmo with the OL and Daboll with the TEs was better than Daboll with the OL and somebody else with the TEs.

Daboll is also on paper the most qualified candidate for the OC job if it opens up next offseason. Another connection is that DeGuglielmo worked under Daboll in Miami in 2011. For a team that hires from outside so rarely, it'd be odd to see a guy hired if the other coach on the team with any connection were leaving.

Really like this explanation, makes a ton of sense to me. Kudos! Of course, we're now reuniting the offensive coaching staff of the stellar 2011 Miami Dolphins' offense with the offensive coordinator of the stellar 2011 St. Louis Rams offense....

2013: Indy, Denver
2012: Houston, Ravens
2011: Denver, Baltimore, Giants
2010: Jets (5 sacks)
2009: Baltimore - I won't count this, but the pressures caused 2 INTs.
2007: Jacksonville, Chargers, Giants

The Pats O-Line has played awful in 5/12 postseason games since 2007, or nearly half of all the playoff games since then.

Gotta love the people who try and re-write history to make themselves feel good.

2007 - the entire O-line had the flu. Every one of them was getting IV fluids during half-time. OH, and I LOVE how you give no credit to the Giants defense. It was that the Pats played horribly. Not that the Giants actually over-performed. Or hell, the fact that our "ALL-PRO" CB gave up a TD to David F'in Tyree. Or that he also gave up the miracle helmet catch or missed that interception.

2011 - Guess you forgot that the receivers had critical drops (Welker x2, Hernandez, Branch) and that's why you're blaming the O-line and not giving ANY credit to a Giants Defense.

You think that the O-line was the issue in the game this year in Denver? Guess you didn't actually WATCH the game. If you had, you'd know that it was the horrible game-plan on both sides of the ball.. But, yeah, that's the O-lines fault. I mean, Solder, Mankins, Connolly, and Cannon are all responsible for Wendell not keeping his eyes open for the late rusher the way he's supposed to.. It's how Knighton got in twice.

Just like Koppen blew the assignment to pick up Ray Lewis that led to the strip sack of Brady during that first series in 2009. Blame the entire O-line on one player missing an assignment. Clearly you are a "throw the baby out with the bathwater" type of person.

One of the best people I've ever had the pleasure to meet in life. Thanks for all the tireless dedicated work you've done for our team and us, Dante . Scarnecchia will forever be known as royalty in the Patriot pantheon.

I can't wait for the conspiracy theorists on this board and the Boston media who will somehow point the finger at BB for Scar's leaving the team. They'll blame it on BB's drafting. Wait for it....any day now...

No, don't go, Dante. Noooooooo.

If you perhaps read my post, you would see that I never said it was the sole reason for the loss - only that the O-line had been bad in each game.

And yes, O-Line play was a huge problem in the Denver game. Nobody on that line played well. Nobody. Couldn't run, whiffed on rushers at the worst times. Wendell the Center was indeed the weakest link, but this is a common thread on Patriots O-Lines and is nothing surprising.

Something had to be done the first few times. At this point it's a repeated mistake and you have the hold the coach responsible.

This offense could be in trouble next year. Brady is the only thing holding it all together now. They need to bring in a veteran offensive assistant head coach so BB can focus on the defense.

They already have Daboll who is a veteran "Offensive Assistant" without a position responsibility. Between him, McDaniels and the position coaches there's plenty of experience and knowledge - especially long time veteran Ivan Fears.

Re: Dante Scarnecchia is retiring

Well this is depressing news. Great coach

Dante, Thanks for all you did to make the Brady-Belichick era all that is has been. Best of luck and enjoy your time away from football.

As much as I respect Scar, you can't deny his O-lines consistently failed in the playoffs these last several years. Hopefully this new guy is at least somewhat good.

I have a hard time blaming that on Scar, looking at the talent that he had to work with. He was consistently asked to coach up middle-to-bottom tier talent at C and RG, and he consistently got them to where they could hold up against all but the really good defenses.

I don't like this news at all. Looks like the needs at C and RG are even bigger than they already were. Best of luck to him in the rest of his life, though. Dante's the best o-line coach ever; if he's decided that now's the time to call it quits, then he's definitely earned his retirement.

I wish Dante much happiness in his retirement.

Thanks for everything Dante. I hope your retirement is as exceptional as your coaching tenure here was :rocker:.

Props to Dante. You were greatly appreciated and will be missed.

That said, with Pepper and Dante departing it looks like Death Panels for the over 65.

Re: Dante Scarnecchia is retiring

i thought this was a joke when i first read the thread title. Sorry to see him go, hes had a long and distinguished career weith the pats. I guess this means gone are the days when the team can draft or sign a JAG and make him into a solid player. The FO is going to have to pay more attnetion to who they draft or sign off the street.

I was hoping this was a joke.

Damn...

I wish him all the best. He was an amazing coach.

**** me...

It's confirmed that Godsey has left and is likely going to the Texans.

#Patriots are losing TE coach George Godsey, as he’ll join his good friend #Texans coach Bill O’Brien’s staff, barring something unforeseen
