Shawn Crable deserves a shot at alternate OLB to see if he's better than Woods

Because Woods hasn't done much to write home about so why not give another player a shot who looked respectable in preseason, even if its for a few downs and if they have the roster spot open for it?

Interesting. How many snaps has Woods had? Over the course of those snaps, how many negative plays has he had on defense? How about on special teams?

Re: Shawn Crable deserves a shot at alternate OLB to see if hes better than Woods

I don't think Woods has been particularly effective when he has been in games this year and I hope BB activates the rookie Crable to replace Woods as the alternate OLB joining Thomas and Vrabel or at least to see what kind of talent he has before the season goes much farther.

I really haven't seen alot of productivity in Woods and would be looking forward to the rookie to see what he got or if he is a better choice than Pierre.

Sure Crable is a rookie but Woods is not exactly a seasoned veteran so why not?
I don't think BB selects active players by by saying "So why not?" I think he puts out the player wkho gives him the beset chance to to win.

Shawn gets a shot every day in practice. When he shows himself to be better than Woods, he will be on the field. Right now he's #4 OLB in a field of 4.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, this is really an honest question.

Do you think that Bill Belichick has any doubt whether Crable or Woods is better? Do you think that he would only be able to make that judgment by 'trying' Crable in a game?

I dont know whether to take your post as YOU would like to be able to see if he is better, or that you think BB needs to put him out there to decide for himself.

Re: Shawn Crable deserves a shot at alternate OLB to see if hes better than Woods

I look at Mayo's starting as the lesser of two evils. Considering we have 3 NFL quality LBers (Vrabel, Bruschi and Thomas) for 4 spots. Where does BB hide the weak link.
The Pats could start Thomas and Bruschi inside, with Vrabel and Woods on the outside. The weak link is Woods.

Or BB can start Mayo and Bruschi on the inside with Thomas and Vrabel on the outside. The weak link is Mayo.

So of the two scenarios where is the best place to hide the weak link? The answer is on the inside where Mayo can get help from Harrison or Sanders as opposeed to Woods who has very little help on the edge.

If the run defense plays poorly again in San Fran, then maybe BB needs to sit Mayo and start Woods on the outside.

You consider Mayo less than an "NFL quality LB"???????????????

Re: Shawn Crable deserves a shot at alternate OLB to see if hes better than Woods

I'm curious about something.....

What exactly is it that Crable has done to 'deserve' a shot at alternate OLB?

He got drafted.
He was issued a uniform.
We lost a game.
He is one of 53 things to talk about to show disdain for the way the team is being run, so a perfectly healthy passive-aggressive form of exhibiting disdain is to suggest that the coach is an idiot and doesnt know who to put on the field.

Re: Shawn Crable deserves a shot at alternate OLB to see if hes better than Woods

Woods has missed several ST tackles and has yet to make a play on D either. He is in there to spell the starter, nothing more. Our dissatisfaction with Woods does not equate to dressing Crable, not yet.

Re: Shawn Crable deserves a shot at alternate OLB to see if hes better than Woods

Crable will get a shot when the coaching staff feels he deserves it. I doubt the Pats are inactivating him because they don't want Pierre Wood to feel pressure with Crable breathing down his neck.

I think that we are just spoiled by seeing Mayo start from game 1 as a rookie. We don't exactly have LT (the original) sitting out.

Just wait.

Well, some of us watch NFL Live every day, and subscribe to Fantasy Football Weekly, so I would have to say we are smart enough to know when BB is screwing up again! :bricks:

This is a great question. Something I have wondered about many times involving many other players over Belichick's time with the team.

The QB situation is in the same shape. We have Cassel who has been here many years and O'Connell, a rookie. Does Belichick know that Cassel will perform better in a real game than O'Connell? How can he be 100% certain this will be the case?

Mayo is starting, Seau didn't come back, so Belichick would start a rookie. Yet what does this say about our rookie CB's who can't get on the field?

I say the best player starts when the games count. Belichick knows who the best players are, no matter if they have never played a down in the NFL or if they are Troy Brown.

In Belichick I trust.

If you read the Belichick's Q&A in the Globe he states that there's a very good chance that Crable will see the field. He doesn't specify it being this game but he does say that it will happen.

Been listening to Belichick long enough to know the man says nothing.

If asked about Chad Jackson the night before he was cut Belichick would have taked about how hard Chad works, how he is always watching film or learning the playbook

I don't recall him ever saying anything bad about about anyone. God knows Ad Davis gave him the perfect opportunity to do so over the past few days.

Belichick may love Crable or may be getting ready to cut him next week. The press will never know until it happens.

We should hope that Woods, Crable, Guyton, & Mayo all continue to improve and earn their stripes. The sooner the better.
