    Re: Shane Vareen.....

I don't know about that, seems like running outside and catching the ball are his strengths and running between the tackles and blocking are what he needs (needed?) work on. Slow to hit the hole at times last year.

Really? Ummmm, Bolden had one game for 16, 137 against solid Buffalo.

The rest of his 9 games ( ped suspension....) he was a 3.4 ypc man for 137 yds.

That's how averages tend to work. Take away big runs or big game away from anyone and the average dips. Most productive in the game he played the most.

And you're the one talking about 5 YPC in an exhibition game. But Bolden's shouldn't count?

Can we say, told ya so?

Hopefully Ridley gets it together, however, he's had some fumbling issue like I mentioned before. Vereen might take that job if he keeps this up and improves on his blocking.

    Ok, Ok...

So are we almost ready to say that if Ridley continues running this way, Vereen might take over? Or no?

Seems like Blount and Bolden took more rushes then him last week.

In the first half, when the game was still in doubt and Tampa still gave a damn, Ridley ran more times than Blount and Bolden combined (7, 2, 3 respectively). FWIW, their ypc in the first half was as follows:

    Ridley - 4.3

    Blount - 3.3

    Bolden - 2.5

Maybe, but for some reason it seems he's lost his steam. We say a couple of flashes of the old him last week but Bolden looked great and Vereen looked awesome before he got hurt.

Bolden had one good run and a couple screen passes where he got what was there. Good game for sure, but not "great" and certainly not a pushing-for-lead-back performance.

You should have seen this place after the first game against the Bills last year. You would think that Bolden was poised to threaten Emmett Smith's rushing records.

That said, I'm not sure who this Shane Vereen character is, but I'm looking forward to getting Ben Vareen back to add that speedster dimension to the passing game out of the backfield.

You don't think he might dance behind the line a little too much? :confused4:

    True.

I just think Ridley has been mediocre thus far this season. I know its early but we can't elude the fact that he lost snaps last week, alot of snaps. Vereen comes back and plays the way he was, Ridley isn't the main back to me.

Ridley has been mediocre this far in 2013, but only some of that was his doing. The fumble was certainly on him, as was some of the issues against NY since he appeared to be tentative.

That said, he ran for over 4 ypc in the first half against a very good defense that Bill himself didn't expect to have much success on. That was why Bolden started and NE didn't attempt a single run on their first drive. And NY's dominant front seven along with NE's OL crapping the bed had far more to do with the run issues there than anything Rids did.

All told, barring a reemergence of his fumbling problem, there is no reason to think Ridley won't be the same excellent running back he was in 2012.

If by 'main back' you mean a bell cow type of runner, I don't think so. He's valuable as a change of pace runner, but I don't want to see him in short yardage situations, and I doubt if he would hold up to a 300-carry season.

I like the Pats committee approach. Use the runner who is hot and/or whose strengths match up best against the defense of the week.

Funny how Vereen's games never get described that way.

There is some truth to this, but...

    A) Vereen is more talented than Bolden.

    B) Bolden has never had a performance even close to what Vereen did against Buffalo.

This is the part that gets to me. Ridley and Lloyd's #s last year are blown out of porportion. You really think Ridley was "excellent" last year?

    Lloyd sucked. Ridley was fine.
