Really ? Did you watch Lance play in college ? He’s got a better arm, is more accurate, and is just as good a runner. He ran for over 1100 yards during his only full season in college, and ran for 14 TDs. Also threw 28 TD passes with 1 INT. ONE INT.
I've never watched FCS games. Louisville (where Malik played) is FBS, as is Western Kentucky (where Zappe played and set FBS records for yardage and TD's).

FBS is a wee bit more competitive than FCS.

Playing in AA against kids from Podunk State who have zero chance at playing at the next level.
Jimmy G came from that league. Joe Flacco came from that league. Tony Romo came from that league, Steve McNair came from that league, Kurt Warner came from that league. People can come from the FCS and succeed in the NFL.

Sometimes players need a change of scenery to succeed. Hell, Geno Smith had his best season last year on what, his 4th team, at age 32 I believe. Lance was not a good fit for the Shanahan offense. Mac would’ve been tailor fit for that offense. They made a mistake. Would not be shocked to see Lance succeed elsewhere.

Sure, but many folks around here scoff at Mac's and Zappe's all-time FBS records as being meaningless in the NFL -- so even more so Trey Lance's one year wonder at FCS North Dakota State.

I NEVER scoffed at Mac’s college accomplishments, I ALWAYS defended them.

How about Zappe's FBS records: 62 TD's and 5900+ yards -- does that make him a great NFL QB prospect?

Having an opportunity to land a athlete like Lance, would be a no brainer.. I've said IMHO My guy Mac is going to price himself out of NE.. so it's not my money, not my draft picks.. I'd say Lance for a 4th and another player sounds good to me! He can be in the back up role, continuing to develop and learn. His talents are what the modern NFL is all about.
"No brainer"? I think you misunderstand the term. This post qualifies for an alternative meaning.

If Mac "prices himself" out of NE, that means he demonstrates himself to be a viable Franchise QB, in which case we pay the man what he's earned. In what circumstance would he "price himself" out of NE without being a star QB?

Speaking of which, would you care to explain how keeping a huge cap hit on his guaranteed next two years for a 3rd string QB who can't get on the field when the team that drafted him has tried to move heaven and earth to do so is a wise move? You want to drop a valuable draft pick, a player AND whichever starter we have to cut to fit him under the cap for a 3rd string QB replacement? This would be the equivalent of paying $5,000,000 per year for a long snapper.

Malik's best year he ran for over 1000 yards and scored 20 TDs.

This is why I voted yes. Would love to take San Frans new QB3-first-round-picks off their hands for what they pulled with the Pats. And I'll never forget only giving up a 2nd for Garoppolo when he had more trade value then than now.
Just a reminder that part of the reason they only gave up a 2 was that they ate $10M on Hoyer's contract.

I'd prefer dominating opponents so those aren't necessary.
Yep, a bogus stat. I did the calcs on GWD/game and Brady was 27th all time, just behind Kyler Murray and ahead of Andy Dalton. Joe Montana was 60th all time -- way, way behind the clutch Drew Bledsoe who was 36th.

I wish the NFL would bring back the World League or some other minor league. Someone like Lance and many others would really benefit from it.

I would take a chance on Lance. Nothing higher than a 5th round pick. He’s a bigger, more talented Malik Cunningham, with a cannon arm. Don’t know if the 49ers would take a 5th, I’m guessing a 4th. Maybe give them Cunningham and a 5th ?

That was my first thought, but his salary would still be a problem.

I stand askance at the thought of acquiring Lance.....you got a better chance of seeing Jesus and all the angels playing horseshoes with Satan...by the roadside in the desert...so don't put us under pressure

Every single one of those players you named has something in common - they are / were good accurate passers.

There's nothing that Lance has shown so far in the NFL that suggests he's within a country mile of any of those.

He's Josh Johnson with better PR.

I'm actually really surprised by this whole thing.

Like everyone else, I was impressed by Purdy last year, but it's hard not to think with more tape that there's going to be regression, even on a team that is built to make QBs look good. Purdy was passed on hundreds of times for a reason.

I just assumed this season that there was no way Lance wouldn't be the starter, with all the draft capital invested in him, and the fact he's still on his rookie deal. I felt like they still had time to see what he has before dumping him.

Bringing in Darnold was a mistake. He adds very little and serves only to get into the heads of the young QBs on this roster. The 49ers have shown they can win with a serviceable QB. I don't get why they wouldn't let TL start for 2-3 games and at least get a better look, rather than trading him when his value couldn't possibly be lower. If he shows flashes of being decent he could still be traded mid season after the inevitable QB injury on another team.

That said, the fact that he lost the backup job to Darnold says a lot about his current state, so I would not even take him on for free right now.

The Niners FO has done a great job of building this team. I believe they would have beaten Philly last year if they didn't have CM throwing the ball by the end. It's hard to believe they bungled this whole situation so poorly. Of course, if Purdy becomes the next Brady 6th round pick story, all the bad juju goes away around this, but that's a pretty long shot.

I never heard that before, including from my buddy who is a huge 49ers fan. Thanks!

FIFY

Brady was a pretty long shot too. We saw how that worked out.
IMO biggest reason they both got passed so many times is the herd instinct. Once they start dropping everybody gets scared to be the one that takes a chance. Same reason guys get drafted too high (Trey?), they get hyped and there’s FOMO. Has little to do with actual player qualities. That’s why so much noise around draft position is just that, empty noice.

and for the record, no way I think Trey is worth trading for, unless you want to swap Zappe and his inordinate rate of batted balls for Trey’s developmental prospects. I’m not for it, but if Bill wants to roll with Trey and Malik I’ll get out the popcorn and enjoy the hysteria on this board.
