Sean Peyton calls the Dumbest play of the year

Fourth and inches, where a NYJ defence...or any defence for that matter...would be cheating to the middle to prevent a QB sneak or a dive play through the A/B gaps?

It's actually not a bad shout. Just like a stretch play off tackle isn't a bad shout. Sometimes you should trust your O Line to win the battle but if there plugging the A & B gaps, the logical thing to do is run something different. Misdirections, sweep plays and off tackle runs are perfect.

When the players execute that is....

On the 4th & 1 shout...it worked bar the fact Faulk didn't hold on to it. The execution was off. The gamble didn't pay off but the play call itself was perfectly logical...

I wouldn't run a play like this against the Jets' defense in any situation. I think it was a bad call. Against another opponent, it might not have been a bad call. But against the Jets, it was one of the worst calls he could have called.

I couldn't believe that play call either! Really 4-less than one and you run a reverse? Just silly! I think sometimes really smart people, think too much and out smart themsleves!!

That being said, I'm sure losing Sporles early in the game threw off his "scripted plays". Once again, the Jets get lucky, which is good, because it means another season with Rex at the helm and Geno as QB, both of which is great news for the Pats!!

I'd have a hard time defending McDaniels if he called that. I think Payton outsmarted himself. He probably thought the Jets were going to stack the middle of the LOS, anticipating the QB sneak and called that play which, if the Jets had done that and bit, would have gone the distance. But that's a high risk play on 4th and Inches. It takes a long time to set up and the ball carrier is 5-6 yards in the backfield when he receives the ball against a tough run defense. In that situation, I take confidence in my fat asses and call the sneak right up the gut.

That said, that play call wasn't the whole reason the Saints lost yesterday.

Certainly any run play against the Jets' front is a tough call. Some may have argued play action and a quick dump off would be the better play. Slow materialising plays are a huge gamble in this situations.

One thing is for sure however, players can make a play call look bad, and they can make a play call look phenomenal.

To our untrained minds, we might not see any logic, but there are normally very good reasons as to why a play is called.

Probably could have been a big gain if jets don't blow that play up. If Brees throws that and it's incomplete people probably go nuts that he didn't run it on 4th and inches. Still, I think that's better called on 3rd and inches. 4th and inches he probably should have sneaked it.

I agree that play calling all too often gets blamed instead of shoddy execution. In this case, I can't defend the call though. That's an instance where you rely on your offensive line (which is good BTW) to push back the DL a few inches and let your QB/RB ram it up the A-Gap.

All plays are dumb when they don't work, as are all gambles. Which is why I find the criticism of Josh McDaniels so laughable. After we just put up the highest score of the season and a record beat down of the Steelers, the "jMac is a bad OC" crew have been silent.

Not true, some play calls are just stupid. And that was a stupid call at that point and time.

I actually like surprise plays in the context of a long game. Fourth and inches, however, is about having plays that give you the highest percentage of success. Snap counts, sneaks, quick openers. It's like risking your paycheck in a bar bet. Those plays are to be picked up every time. You have the ball and the decision to when to snap. Every time.

I would question the execution of that play more than the call. The TE should have picked up Coples.

The call wasn't that bad, the execution was. Two Saints on the left of the line were blocking no one, if they do their job he gets a big gain

I disagree. Of course if you execute on every play you'll succeed most likely but...

That essentially turned a 4th and inched into a fourth and four. Offense knows when the ball is snapped, it's crazy to give the defense that much time and room to get n the play.

I look at it as imagining what I'd want on defense. Would I want a hard count, quick count, sneak, quick opener, with the offense having the temporary advantage? Or would I want te offense to pitch it back four yards, giving me time to sniff out and get back in the play?

Is this the same guy who called the dumbest onside kick in the history of football in the Super Bowl a couple years ago?

Oh wait, that kick worked, so I guess it was a brilliant move. Just like this same play would have been brilliant if it had worked.
