Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [merged]

Re: Maroney to Denver per Schefter...

We turned a first rounder into five years of production, then in his last year flipped him for 4th. That's really good value; if anything, getting a 4th now makes it an even better pick.

By your math, I'm sure Logan Mankins was a waste of a pick too

Not sure you should be questioning anybody elses math, 2006-2009 would only be four years. I also don't know if you can include 93 yards on 28 carries as a year of production.

No one's saying the guy is a great player. I'm just saying this is a long-term strategic move to get value for a player who you weren't going to sign, while miminally impairing this season's roster - there's no evidence that he had done anything to put him in BB's doghouse.

Keep in mind also that the Broncos are terrible this year and that is likely a top-100 pick.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver [merged]

Your irrational hatred of the player is wreaking havoc with your ability to process logic. If (1) Welker was in the last year of his deal; and (2) the Patriots saw Welker, Edelman and Gonzalez as being relative equals in the slot, then the Patriots would likely trade Welker, yes.

Wow, ok. There is more to a player than their relative position on the depth chart. The Pats felt that there was little value (both in terms of talent and intangibles) to explore an extension even with Faulk, Taylor, and Morris on the downside of their career. To say that the Pats would do the same with Welker in a similar situation is unrealistic, to say the least. But whatever floats your boat.

And to note, I don't hate Maroney. But I just dont understand how people could defend him when he has contributed nothing to the Pats since being drafted.

Well, Adrian Clayborn or Cameron Heyward appear to be the perfect fit for that Raiders draft pick.

Or Christian Ballard maybe. By next spring all three could be in Suh or McCoy territory (and so can that Raider's pick).

And the Maroney Defender Club's great hope just folded like a house of cards.
Face it Maroney was just not a good RB. He never 'got it' and he didn't have the vision or instincts for the position. And to BB's eyes he is worth no more than a 4th round pick. Heck the Pats had to kick in a 6th as well to make this deal happen. Too bad we didn't draft Jamaal Charles or MJD instead. Could have saved ourselves the disappointment and used lower round picks. But no team can draft perfectly. BB has acknowledged his mistake and moved on. The 2006 draft was a total disaster. Our best pick that whole draft was a kicker.

This is a simplistic attitude. Maroney had his down sides and he was disappointing in the end, but he remains a dynamic, talented player with a lot of upside. I think it's too bad he's gone, but I'll take the 4th. I couldn't care less about throwing in a 6th.

Because some people are smart enough to realize that your claim isn't true.

Did he live up to what a 1st round pick should be? No, but he wasnt as useless as many made him out to be. As long as FT and SM can stay healthy we'll be ok, I think they also feel BJGE has come far enough along to fill in if need be.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver [merged]

Contrary to popular opinion, Maroney was not NEARLY the "dancer" everyone here claims he was, and CERTAINLY not last year. Last year he played behind a woefully overrated offensive line, who did him no favors. Unfortunately, LoMar suddenly became a fumbler, lost a few balls, and that couldn't have come at a worse time.

I wish him luck.

BIG LOL!!!

Anyone that thinks Maroney is gonna light it up in Denver just can't let go. He is going to be the same ole same ole role player there that he was here.

Remind me of how many players BB has let go that end up AWESOME on their new team all of a sudden?

We have seen the best that Maroney can offer and it is fourth round material, minus a sixth.

I was perfectly happy to let him play out his contract as a role player on the team but seriously who cares?

"I just dont understand how people could defend him when he has contributed nothing to the Pats since being drafted."

This is RIDICULOUS and needs to be pointed out. Good Lord, none of us thinks he wound up being what we hoped he'd be, but come on. Talk about overkill.

So please enlighten us. What has this first round pick accomplished in his career? Feel free to go beyond stats and add those intangibles that good players demonstrate. I'll start. One good playoff game vs SD in the AFC Championship game in '07.

Brady mentioned on D&C, when talking about how the accident felt compared to some hits on the field, that he thinks he still feels a hit Ray LEwis laid on him in the playoffs last year. I'm thinking he means the play where LoMo whiffed on the block. That plus fumbles gets you into both Brady's and BB's doghouse.

Excellent theory. Blocking is a pretty important skill for an RB around here. Fred Taylor's great block in Game 1 mattered a lot. Faulk's blocking skills are huge.

And of course -- Morris/Pollard/knee.

Why would I waste time pointing out the obvious to you yet again? It's been gone over time and again.

Meh, It's more then a bag of footballs, which is what I thought he was worth.

McDaniels is familiar with Maroney but it's surprising how cheap the price was to get him.

Just more evidence that the 2006 draft was a complete disaster.

I don't know who is to blame for that terrible draft, but I think the team really missed Weiss and Crennel in helping out with draft evaluation.

The team completely whiffed on Kevin O'Connell, Chad Jackson, Maroney, and Dave Thomas and Mills never had a chance in an offense that didn't really use tight ends.

Ah yes, there were so many. That's why they a young RB go for next to nothing rather than working out an extension. Thanks for your contribution to the thread.

Surprisingly low compensation.
I guess this means the Pats didn't promise a 2011 6th for any of the White/Page trades.

Where did people start posting about an extension?

To all you people on the forum that thought Maroney was the franchise and that BJGE was a piece of crap, a big haha to you.

Thank god the most frustrating RB is gone. The Taylor/BJGE duo has been born.
