Pats are pretty well set for the 2011 draft, with two 1st, two 2nds and two 4ths now.

And possibly depending on the arcane rules that only A1JT understands, as much as an additional comp third for Ben Watson who signed for good money with the Browns including a $6.5 million signing bonus. But more likely a 5th instead. (AJ1T once avered you needed a mid $5.5 million deal to get a third.)

So it could be 2x1s, 2x2s, 2x3s, 2x4s, and a 5, 7; or 2x1s, 2x2s, 1x3s, 2x4s and 2x5s, and 7.

LoMo was a #1, and many expected him to be an HOF-type back.

He was a decent back, who had some big games, mostly in the 2007 playoffs.

I liked having him in the mix with the old backs. Wish the Pats had kept him, since they didn't get much in return.

That said, I think Law Firm would be more durable, albeit with less upside on a given day.

We basically gave up a wasted 1st round pick, a future (2011) 6th rounder for Denver's 2011 4th rounder.

Can we now, finally, acknowledge that Laurence Maroney was a bust?

He's Josh McDaniel's headache now.

We turned a first rounder into five years of production, then in his last year flipped him for 4th. That's really good value; if anything, getting a 4th now makes it an even better pick.

By your math, I'm sure Logan Mankins was a waste of a pick too

Maroney may have shown more than BJGE but that's b/c he's gotten every opportunity in the world here.

If Maroney is better than BJGE it is only by a small amount and all of his injuries, dancing and fumbles offsets that difference.

I'd rather have the average running back than the one that has shown to be above average but fumbles inside the 5 when you need him most and is always getting injured.

Maroney is a liability and now he's Denver's problem.

For all his "fumbling problems" Maroney had half as many fumbles as Adrian Peterson did last year. And AP's fumbles cost the Viking's a trip to the Super Bowl way more than Favre's last minute interception did.

and AP's skill is so much higher than Maroney we can't even compare the 2.

But the pick doesn't apply this season. And 4th round picks aren't gold. I mean, Ohrnberger (hey, I spelled his name right on the first try!).



To me it's an issue of running back depth in a league where RBs drop like flies versus a marginal pick next year. I mean, it's not like we're guaranteed to land a Hernandez or a Ghost.

Weird trade.

The Pats hit on more fourth rounders than they miss on. Could be anything from Ohrnberger to Samuel, with the middle ground being a Wilhite-type player. And as much as people like to rip on Wilhite, he's quality depth, which is exactly what you're looking for in the fourth round. Trades like this are why the Pats always seem to be deeper than their opponents.

And here is where arguing becomes pointless. I make a statement, you put words in my mouth saying the two can be compared as overall backs.

My point was, fumbles happen in the NFL, even amongst the best backs.

A 4+ YPC back doesn't become a "liability" because he had three fumbles.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't be against it, but I don't see it as a necessity with the first pick. I guess I'd probably go BPA... though we're a bit far out to be making roster evaluations heading into next year's draft.

I think it's almost a foregone conclusion that the Raiders' pick is being used on a DE. If you want to replace a Richard Seymour type of player, you're going to need a top-5 pick to do it. After all, Tyson Jackson went #3 and he's at best, Seymour-lite. Add in that there are some great DE prospects at the top of the draft this year, and I'm pretty sure that it's not a coincidence that this is the draft that Belichick dealt into.

Exactly. We'd better be getting someone better than Jackson, and even he was #3 overall. This year, I'd be surprised if a team that's looking for that talent is at the top of the draft (the Chiefs don't suck, Mangini will be fired anyways if the Browns finish worse than the Raiders), so the Pats should be able to use that pick to get the best of what's supposed to be a really good DE class. Might even be able to trade around a bit.

Not true. According to NFL.com Maroney had a higher lost fumble / per carry ratio than even Adrian Peterson last season.

Not sure how this is possible. Could some of Peterson's fumbles come on returns or pass receptions ?

You're probably right though... there seem to be quite a few DE's going in the top 20 in 2011 mocks. And the big four at WR will probably help us get access to the guys we're coveting.

Jackson was taken in a bad year (take a look at the players between him and Crabtree), and he's been unfairly maligned by Chiefs fans. He also looked pretty darned good last night.

Having said that, I agree with the notion that you want more than Tyson Jackson when you're picking at #3.
