I would note that there was incredible satisfaction in winning last season, for the team, for Brady and for Kraft.

There is no way to know just how much more Brady wants to play. He certainly has no more to prove, and no more revenge to have.

Say if near the end, his arm strength dropped 20%, and foot speed another 20% during those last few years; his line adjustments, defense reading, audibles, game prep and tactics, would be more than enough to make up for it. TB would probably take a small 20% salary discount as well to build a better team around him IMO.

That's not as impressive as it sounds. Back then to carry cap space over you had to create a fake NLTBE clause in a contract (like giving Matt Cassel $5M if he made 10 field goals).

I'm no cap expert now, and I was really clueless a decade ago, but I don't recall that being the case.

NLTBE clauses seem to be excluded from the initial salary cap from reading Miguel's 2006 cap info (hat tip to Miguel as always. There's a column for Roster Bonus/LTBE bonuses, but not the NLTBE.

In the example you gave, Cassel never did that before, so all of that would be considered NLTBE, and not included in the cap. But if Cassel made 10 FGs, then $5M would be added, and it would be considered LTBE the following year.

The 2007 salary cap had an adjustment of around $4M which suggests that the 2006 team had a few people not reach their LTBE bonuses. But I don't think there was any weird NLTBE bonus stuff inflating the cap like you suggested. I could be wrong though.

The 2006 AFCCG was goober's signature game - i can't think of another playoff game that stands out for him.

The D that year was led by Dean Pees, whom i never liked. Patricia is far better.

2001 offense was 6th overall in points - hardly anemic compared to the rest of the league. And the 2001 D was 5th ranked.

Also, those stats don't account for the fact that the 2001 team was MUCH better the 2nd half of the season, improving almost weekly once they figured out what BB was doing.

Today, teams can (effectively) just send a letter to the league office saying "We have $X in cap room left over, and we want to carry it all over to next year."

That wasn't the case prior to the current CBA. They actually had to use a gimmick in which they added a weird incentive in order to shift the cap room around:

A small discount from what? He is now getting $14M of new money a year while other QB's are getting $20M.

Jimmy G is gonna want to start. No way I see him riding the bench past 2017. There are many risks which could occur. It's possible JG stinks up the joint in 2018 while TB is still successfull and playing great for Denver ( God forbid) or some other team. Maybe the Pats trade JG and choose TB. Only to see a Manning level deteriation while JG is successful elsewhere and no QB of the future.

My guess? TB wants to keep playing after 2017. Ultimately the team gambles that JG's potential as a franchise QB is the way to go over hedging your bets on a soon to be 41 year old. It ends " Badly" between super hero guy and organization.

Perfect scenario for the Pats is TB going out on top in 17 and retiring voluntarily.
( Knock on wood Brady wouldn't try to pull a Favre a few months later).

Ya never know Bill seems to like JB. But he is obviously an unknown and might take another season or 2 to figure out what JB is going to be. To me Jacoby has some major work to do if he wants to be a starting QB.

But Regardless of who JG or JB is, Bill is definitely not sold that TB has 3 years left of play. If he was sold I am sure he would have traded JG. Suppose to be a deep QB class in 2018.

Just because Bill is not sold now doesn't mean Brady won't be the starter for the next 3 years. However if he is I don't see any way that JG is on the roster.

JG is a great insurance policy, but we as Pats fans and even Bill himself has never really had a guy backing up TB that could lead the Patriots to the playoffs. So this is a first. Bill himself said there is very little difference between JG and TB play.. however we still don't know if JG has the balls and the toughness that TB has. JG still has to prove he has "It" and we won't know that until he plays a full season and some playoff games.

One thing fans will have to realize is that after TB leaves or retires no one will ever be as good as him. Or there is a very small chance of that happening.

Agreed. TB has proven he can come back from big deficits when it matters most. JG has yet to be in that position.

JG also needs to do what's best for his career. I see no way both TB & JG are with this organization in 2018.

I don't think the FG example is quite in line with this, as this link mentions that the Eckel bonuses were considered likely to be earned for the purposes of the salary cap. But I have no idea what.

As you mentioned, I don't know that the Matt Cassel FG example was the most appropriate since the league still has to review and approve all deals, but maybe something like Corey Dillon rushing for 2,500 yards would've been used.

Looks like Antwain Spann got a $2.9M LTBE bonus in 2006. So I guess we could have spent that on a WR.

But yeah, I stand by my original comment, Reche Caldwell wasn't the reason we lost that game to the Colts. The overwhelming majority of the blame goes to the D. Some goes to Caldwell, some goes to the refs who didn't have the balls to make a call on the road, but the majority is on the D giving up 32 in the second half.
