Rumor: Pats interested in Josh Rosen?

The Browns should double dip QBs at #1 and #4.

That would be a smart move. They could figure out whose the better QB in a couple of years, extend that guy, and then trade the other guy for a high pick. I think it's already implied since I called the move "smart" that the Browns would never consider doing it.

What if they both suck?

Still worth a shot. They could draft any two positions with players who suck. Might as well get better odds to get a franchise QB. Then again, I railed last off-season they were crazy not to deal their first pick for Jimmy G.

Well I never said the rookie would BEAT Brady either. I said he would push him. As in compete with him. I agree that the starting job is Brady's without a shadow of a doubt until he declines noticeably and loses it. The issue with that, from where we sit today, is said noticeable decline could literally happen any year, month, week, or day now. The guy is 41 years old.

People are in denial. They think Brady can keep this elite play up for another 5 years. We need to find a good young QBs right now, not later

interesting idea

They would trade down from 4 and draft a 2nd quarterback late in the 1st.

Either Mason or Kyle. I'd pass on Rosen, Mayfield and Jackson as they are too expensive (draft picks) and Patriots has too many issues to address.

Rashad Evans #23
Kolton Miller #31
Mason/Kyle #43/move up in 2nd round

I remember hearing something like this back about 4-5 years ago....

I don't know how much longer were going to have Brady for, but while we do have him I'd like to draft high on defensive players.

True.

However, Father Time does have limits on how long he can be beaten. And yes, we could be sitting here in 4 or 5 years, with a couple of youngsters, and need to trade one of them, and draft another. Would that be so bad?

Heresy but if this QB class does not contain a reachable franchise QB, Pats should wait until 2019. And if no top guy reachable then let nature take its course. Brady retires, suck for a year, draft high for a QB, still suck another year while he develops along with a solid 53 and then reap the rewards.

I agree.

However our time frame is relevant.

Perhaps Jackson and Rudolph aren't franchise quarterbacks in that the can't start this year. Perhaps they have the talent but need TWO years to develop. Under these circumstances, I think that we should draft one of them,

Waiting until 2019 sounds great. Perhaps we have the ammunition to draft a player who will develop in one year, or not.

We have the luxury of bringing in a talented QB with the idea of expecting nothing in 2018, and hoping the he will be the backup in 2019.

And yes, then in 2019 we can evaluate the situation again.

I don't think that we should just wait and hope that we will be able to get a top quarterback next year.

IF WE CHOOSE TO WAIT,
then we should trade one of our firsts and on our 2nds in to next year, so that we have he ammunition to trade up high in next year's draft.

I’d rather be prepared than sorry. If he’s still Brady in 5 years great trade the qb we took if he’s not we have a qb waiting

I'm all for taking a QB, in round 1 even, if there's someone worth taking, and I've said that here. I'm just not going to be sold on the "Twilight of his career" stuff as an excuse to throw away a draft over a QB. Father Time is undefeated, but that's because he can keep retreating until the end. There's not a hard and fast finish line.

And, when people start talking about "But Brady is the only one...", they are overlooking the fact that Brees is only about a year and a half behind him, and still throwing for well over 4000 yards a season (5208 in 2016).

Rosen Rumors:

I honestly can’t believe we may have a shot at Rosen. NFL may make the same draft day mistake 13 years later.

Rosen is the Chosen one.

That’s exactly what people said in 2014.

They could not have been any more wrong.

I don’t think Brady wants to play five more years but those predicting his demise should really shut their pieholes.

Yes, they were wrong. And the team was prepared should they be right. We had a backup in the meantime, and got our draft pick back. I don't know why this was such a tragedy.

and here we are again, with Brady having beaten Father Time for four more years. We WILL have a backup (like from the first couple of rounds, 3rd at the latest). And maybe we'll be in the same situation in 4 years, or not. If the QB is any good, we will extend him at that point or trade him. Again, if we are wrong, there is little damage having a backup, and insurance.

I understand that many think the franchise will end when Brady goes, or that the team will/should lose all its games so that we use a top draft pick to be competitive again. That is NOT the patriot way, not now, not since Kraft arrived, not ever.

UPSIDE POTENTIAL
With 2 years of development and coaching, the top 8 quarterbacks having the upside potential to be stars for the patriots. The question is who is so good that he deserves the additional sources required in a trade up.

DOWNSIDE RISK
Many are so questionable that he may be not be better than a mediocre quarterback. If we choose one of them, we might be carrying 4 quarterbacks (including a late rounder or UDFA). Alternatively, we might need to draft another quarterback next year.

REAL INSURANCE
Unless we think that we have a real stud whose downside is being an OK starter for us, then we should be trading for an addition 1st in 2019 and perhaps even a additional 2nd.

To be blunt, if we draft Jackson at 23, I think that we need to trade at least one of our other top picks into 2019.
