Roster cutdowns - PATRIOTS

Most probable however who had Malcom Butler on their watch list?
Show of hands

Probably doesn't count, but, when I was researching the Pats' UDFAs after the 2014 draft, there were three (I think) CBs. Two were ultra athletic guys with pretty good college returner stats. The third guy, though more average athletically, had man-among-boys defensive stats that made me sit up and take notice. That was Butler.

Seems like in the past they always waited until 53 deadline to announce these types of things.

It's entirely possible that Rivers will simply be moved to season-ending IR during cutdowns without further comment until sometime between week-2 and week-3, when we'll hear, "Derek Rivers had surgery yesterday to repair ..."

Ahem...

Back to the thread topic ...

I believe we've passed the 24 hour deadline for teams to claim Lengel or Kidder. Since both were "waived/injured", the should revert to IR or be released with settlements.

UPDATE:

Miguel confirmed. Lengel and Kidder are both on Pats IR for now.

The C Kuntz era (and accompanying jokes) gets an abrupt ending, as he gets Ventroned in record time.

Saying that the era of Kuntz jokes is over, well, I'm sure some posters are going to take that as a challenge. Just sayin'.

Still a full 90-man roster going into the final preseason game, so 37 players to remove beginning Friday.

The easy reductions:

(3) Edelman, Rivers to IR(SE). Jelks to Reserve/NFI.

(1) Daniels (RB)
(3) Maye, Washington, C. Hollister (WR)
(2) G. Gronkowski, Cotton (TE/FB)
(4) McDermott, Rich, King, Ferentz (OL)
(2) Waddle, Douglas (OL) ..... [TRADED or RELEASED]
(2) Killings, Likely (CB)
(2) D. Jones, Thompson (SAF)
(3) Hamilton, Kilgo, Augusta (DT)
(1) Ellis (LB)
(2) Usher, Bart (DE)

Likely:
(1) Keionta Davis to Reserve/NFI

(26) TOTAL
==========

(11) More to cut, including (2) possibly returning to replace Garcia & McLellin after they're sent to IR on Monday.

I don't see Waddle as a definite cut considering pretty much no one has stood out behind Fleming at tackle (including Fleming). He could very easily be the 9th OL if they go with 9. My other candidate is Croston, although I have them keeping 8 anyway.

If you are on Reserve/NFI list, can you be activated at all during the season?

I'm down to Waddle v. Croston for the 8th OL.

Waddle has 24 games of NFL starting experience (DET) at RT, and thus, perhaps some trade value.

Croston has more versatility (OG/OT) and maybe more upside.

Waddle is a vested vet, so the Pats could cut him without exposure to waiver claims, if they temporarily need a roster spot for a guy who's going to IR/Eligible-to-return after cutdowns.

Croston may/may not get claimed off waivers.

Reserve/NFI works the same as Reserve/PUP for roster purposes.

Because NFI-guys were not injured in the NFL, there may (or may not) be a difference in how much a team has to pay them while on IR, according to the CBA. It seems like there would be some reason for having two classifications. OTOH, this is the NFL, so who knows?

That's just about exactly how I see it, except 9th OL instead of 8th. I've got:

T: Solder, Cannon, Fleming, Garcia
G/C: Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Karras

Garcia hasn't really earned a spot but he's a 3rd round rookie, so whatever.

Can anyone tell me what exactly Garcia's injury is? Is he going to b IR'd? I know this is tantamount to a red shirt year for him but I'd like to better understand his status
