Roster cutdowns - PATRIOTS

Doesn't matter. Do you know how many injuries we have at ST (every position) at the moment??
It does matter. The injuries are numerous but that does not mean you keep him for that reason alone.

My point is if there is a player on the roster that can replace Bolden's 264 ST snaps AND provide more value on O or D you keep that player and cut/trade Bolden.

If there isn't said player then BB keeps Bolden

Austin Carr impresses me in the Slot we can maximize his abilities there. I would say the same holds true for D.J. Foster. Both are solid inside the numbers.

I dunna know..He's not a return guy . If he was that would have clinched it for him

But as a core STer who had 264 ST snaps last year - which is hard to replace, it'll depend on if Joe Judge and BB feel there is a core STer on the roster that brings more value to the offense or defensive side of the ball.

ST specialists are always on the bubble at this point because they're roster-end guys. These were the top guys in 2016, in terms of ST snaps per game played:

Geneo Grissom, 22.7 - likely cut?
Nate Ebner, 22.4 - injured
Barkevious Mingo, 20.2 - GONE

Jonathan Jones, 19.2
Brandon Bolden, 18.9
Brandon King, 18.7
Matt Slater, 17.4
Shea McClellin, 15.6 - injured
Jordan Richards, 13.7 - likely cut?
Patrick Chung, 12.6
Jonathan Freeny, 9.8 - likely cut?
Alan Branch, 9.6
James Develin, 9.4
Devin McCourty, 8.9
Kyle Van Noy, 8.3
Duron Harmon, 7.8
Justin Coleman, 6.5*
Matt Lengel, 6.0 - on IR
Cyrus Jones, 5.1 - likely to IR

The Pats have added Marquis Flowers.
*Coleman appears to have increased his ST participation this pre-season.

Bubble guys who've shown up on ST coverage units this pre-season:
O'Shaugnessy, Bates, Moore, Travis, Langi (also injured).

Week-1 opponent, KC, has one of the best return games in the league, perhaps the best the Pats will face all season.

Before the injury to C.Jones I would have said Carr makes the team..now I don't see it as BB is going to try and utilize the Punt, kick off returns in a player that can play multiple positions.

Dj foster gets cut.

Lucien gets cut.

I am going to go with Hollister over O'shaunessy at TE.

Waddle, Jonathon Jones, Coleman, Bolden, Brissett, and Roberts make the team

Leaves a roster spot or 2 open for cuts of other teams or trades.

Cy Jones to IR.

If the Pats keep ..
- Brissett (which now seems more likely than not)
- 8 OL
- 4 RB (White Gillislee, Burkhead, Lewis)
- Bolden (2nd-ranking ST guy behind Jon Jones, with Grissom and Mingo gone and Ebner injured)

Then it comes down to Foster (RB/WR/returner), Carr/Lucien (WR), O'Shaughnessy/Hollister (TE) for the last roster spot on offense. Pick one.

Last guy in is probably Lucien or O'Shaughnessy. Depends upon what's needed on special teams for the most part. Everybody else is likely to make it to the practice squad, and I think Lucien is better than Carr. Foster might sneak in but Bolden is a lock at this point and frankly I don't want a world where Foster is seeing any meaningful snaps.

Also possible the last guy in is a TE, WR, or OL who is on a different roster right now.

So I'm getting inpatient when are moves going to start happening?

I'm checking WEEI and PFT every 10 minutes and its a ghost town.

Is there a over/under this year as to how many Pats cuts get claimed?

That's the offense

QB's - TB12, JimmyG, Bisquick
WR - Cooks, Dola, Mitchell, Hogan, Carr
TE - Gronk, Allen, OShaugSomething
RB - Lewis, Burkhead, White, Gilleslie, Develin
OL - Solder, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon, Karras, Fleming, Garcia, [TBD]

WEEI and PFT? More like zombie-town.

A lot of people have mentioned that Foster, Lucien and Carr are likely to be claims. I'm not sure about that. I saw a report yesterday that there is a glut of WRs being shopped around. We know about Jermaine Kearse from the Seahawks. Dontrelle Inman is supposedly being shopped by the Chargers.. Jarvis Landry may or may not have been the subject of trade talks.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I think Foster could be claimed simply because we know teams have tried to claim him before and only cancelled when he asked them not to claim him, though he is a versatile RB. Lucien and Carr are young, unproven WRs. Lots of better options for WR-needy teams still.

I also check NFL Redzone every morning just to scan the AFC East news at least.

Is patriots.com usually the first to post their roster cuts?

Foster may make the team as a returner now that C. Jones is likely headed to the IR. But the Pats haven't used Foster for punt returns, only kick returns.

There is an off chance the Pats could look outside the team for a returner..

I like Carr in the slot Lucien also showed well last night, but the injury to C Jones may get DJ Foster a spot as a ST punt and kick returner.

Focused on K Moore last night, one of my binkies, pushed around on runs a bit, but he was only thrown at 3 ties last night, a short pass where he held the WR short of a first down, A nice back shoulder throw where he was in position, and the breakup late in the 4th qtr.

I hope we can get him to the PS so he can put on about 10 lbs to be more competitive in the run game. He is a nice defender against the pass.

Shame the WR Holister was injured through camp he showed well last night.

Gonna be an interesting few days as the cuts come down.

I wonder if the decisions will be made on the cuts but we won't hear till later for guys BB wants to get to the PS.

Good points if the Pats can get both Carr and Lucien on their Taxi Squad that's a win win.

If a vet like Bolden is to be cut that will happen sooner rather than later to give them visibility to catch on with another team.

If that were the strategy, I'd would have happened already. In any case, Bolden, Freeny and Slater could be cut (to provide flexibility) and re-signed on Sunday.

This thread will take good care of you when the cuts start this afternoon. There are posters here who know what Belichick will do before Belichick does. I'm interested to see how many trades get done in the next 30 hours. The Patriots are probably fielding some interesting offers for third string players.

Prediction? Patriots get a nice package of picks and a player for Brissett before 4 pm tomorrow.

It seems to me that patriots.com is usually a beat behind. I just keep a few Twitter feeds going - Miguel, Reiss for sure, maybe Kyed, Curran, Howe.

Good points if the Pats can get both Carr and Lucien on their Taxi Squad that's a win win.

I'd like to see KJ Maye on the PS, too. Decent quicks and a relentless downfield blocker. He'd be good to have on the scout team to portray opponent's slot receivers.
