Roster cutdowns - PATRIOTS

That's just about exactly how I see it, except 9th OL instead of 8th. I've got:

T: Solder, Cannon, Fleming, Garcia
G/C: Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Karras

Garcia hasn't really earned a spot but he's a 3rd round rookie, so whatever.

Garcia could make the 53 through cutdowns and then be moved to IR. He'd then be eligible to be brought back after 8 weeks, if he's ready.

If that's the planned move, then it would be 9 OL retained through cutdowns, if Croston is their guy, but only 8 OL if it's Waddle (because he can be temporarily cut without being exposed to waivers like Croston would be).

Can anyone tell me what exactly Garcia's injury is? Is he going to b IR'd? I know this is tantamount to a red shirt year for him but I'd like to better understand his status

I don't know that any specific injury has been reported for Garcia. But, y'know, it's the Pats. If they're not required to say something, they won't.

The nice thing about IR-return is that, with guys like Garcia, they have six weeks in which to rehab, workout, attend meetings, study the playbook, etc. Beginning in the 7th week, they can practice with the team for the next three weeks as a temporary "54th player". After that, the team has to decide whether or not to activate him (and cut another player to make room) or leave him on IR for the rest of the season.

IOW, it doesn't have to be a full red-shirt year for him.

Reserve/NFI works the same as Reserve/PUP for roster purposes.

Because NFI-guys were not injured in the NFL, there may (or may not) be a difference in how much a team has to pay them while on IR, according to the CBA. It seems like there would be some reason for having two classifications. OTOH, this is the NFL, so who knows?

Teams are not obligated to pay NFI players at all while they retain that status.

IDK. I've been thinking that the Pats might do that with Garcia and/or McLellin. Unless they've been moved to WitSec already.

Bolden, Waddle and Freeny are all vested vets, IIRC, who could be cut for a day and brought back.

You are right, McLellin might happen. I had forgotten about him.

Still a full 90-man roster going into the final preseason game, so 37 players to remove beginning Friday.

The easy reductions:

(3) Edelman, Rivers to IR(SE). Jelks to Reserve/NFI.

(1) Daniels (RB)
(3) Maye, Washington, C. Hollister (WR)
(2) G. Gronkowski, Cotton (TE/FB)
(4) McDermott, Rich, King, Ferentz (OL)
(2) Waddle, Douglas (OL) ..... [TRADED or RELEASED]
(2) Killings, Likely (CB)
(2) D. Jones, Thompson (SAF)
(3) Hamilton, Kilgo, Augusta (DT)
(1) Ellis (LB)
(2) Usher, Bart (DE)

Likely:
(1) Keionta Davis to Reserve/NFI

(26) TOTAL
==========

(11) More to cut, including (2) possibly returning to replace Garcia & McLellin after they're sent to IR on Monday.
Nice summary.

Your list is relatively close to mine (details in link below):
Who is on the roster bubble?

I'm now leaning more towards Garcia being part of the original 53 and then IR'd the next day, which would give the Pats a possible option of a return later in the season. Still not convinced that will be the case, because that would eliminate an IR-to-return for any other player injured later on (max of 2 can return).

From that post on Tuesday, I had nine players from the following group making the original 53-man roster, and the remaining 13 being released on the outside looking in. Add Garcia and that leaves eight from the list below.

If I am not mistaken only Bolden and Freeny are vested veterans, and therefore not subject to waiver claims. So if the Pats wanted to keep either or both, they could be part of the 53-man roster cutdowns with the explicit understanding that they would be re-signed the next day, after McClellin and Garcia were placed on IR.

Obviously some of the players below (such as O'Shaugnessy) have a higher percentage of making the original 53-man roster than others (such as Lucien). In many cases these are not roster battles for a position (such as RB), but are roster battles based on versatility, special teams (e.g., Bolden vs Grissom), an eye on 2018, etc.

Hopefully we have no more situations where the odds of a player making the roster are contingent on an injury to another player.

Here you go, pick nine (or eight plus Garcia):
  • QB Jacoby Brissett
  • RB Brandon Bolden
  • RB D.J. Foster
  • TE Jacob Hollister
  • TE James O'Shaughnessy
  • WR Austin Carr
  • WR Devin Lucien
  • OL Jamil Douglas
  • OL Cole Croston
  • OL Conor McDermott
  • OL LaAdrian Waddle
  • DE Geneo Grissom
  • LB Marquis Flowers
  • LB Elandon Roberts
  • LB Trevor Bates
  • LB Jonathan Freeny
  • S Jordan Richards
  • S Damarius Travis
  • CB Justin Coleman
  • CB Cyrus Jones
  • CB Jonathan Jones
  • CB Kenny Moore

It's my understanding that the rule was changed so that teams are no longer required to designate which players are to return until they're ready to return.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to assume that, for the healthy guys who didn't play in the final pre-season game, a decision has already been made. So, it was interesting to me that Jordan Richards didn't play.

Yep. Some times it means they made it. Some times not.

For example, Adam Butler did not play last night. He's not going anywhere.

I'm not confident enough to say that about Richards

Exactly. I was implying that Richards might fall into the "sometimes not" category.

EDIT: It's also interesting that the new guy, Marquis Flowers appears to have been absent. At least I didn't see him (#59).

Is Bolden gone?

I could have sworn thats what they said on the reddit NY VS NE stream last night.

With all the injuries on ST, there's a higher probability of him sticking.

I dunna know..He's not a return guy . If he was that would have clinched it for him

But as a core STer who had 264 ST snaps last year - which is hard to replace, it'll depend on if Joe Judge and BB feel there is a core STer on the roster that brings more value to the offense or defensive side of the ball.

Logical, but do you know how many injuries we have at ST (every position) at the moment?? Bolden provides value, experience & is pretty good in pass protection. Also, known to make a play or two on ST.
