Even if Rodgers is 50% of what he was, he's still an improvement over Zach Wilson, which imo gets the Jets in the playoffs with the big caveat that they can mostly stay steady everywhere else. Which the latter isn't a guarantee, but the Jets have reasons to be optimistic if they get him. The AFC East could end up the toughest division in football and the Pats could be the team with the worst QB and the worst overall roster outside of QB.
That’s the big question, isn’t it? The Jets are already up against the 2023 cap. They’ll structure Rodgers’ contract to cost as low as possible in 2023, but that’ll still mean he’ll take up 8-10m in cap space. They’ll need to cut a big name to have him fit. And they won’t be able to add anyone else. Their starting LT, G, and C are free agents. One starting LB, DT, and S are free agents. Numerous other rotational guys at DL and LB are free agents (Thomas, Curry, Alexander) who they wouldn’t be able to resign without restructuring or cutting others.
And that’s before taking into account the fact that they’re giving up Pick 13, plus likely a lot more, as part of the trade.
None of this says it won’t work out for them in 2023. It very well might. They could hit home runs in the middle rounds of the draft to replace the some of those guys, and maybe backups step up big time to replace the rest, maybe they have good luck with the injuries this year, and maybe a reinvigorated Rodgers reverts back to 2018 form. That certainly could happen, and they get a potential deep playoff run in 2023.
But they’re the Jets. They’ll likely mess it up somehow, by either alienating Rodgers or letting him run the whole show and upsetting the rest of the team, or letting the media circus destroy the team. Drafting poorly mid-round. Cutting a critical player and not replacing him. Not having bench strength when someone gets hurt. And 2024-2025 might really be hamstrung, with no cap space to resign existing guys once Rodgers deal really kicks in, and Rodgers actually does start to decline, and with potential additional high draft picks surrendered as part of the trade.
We’ll see how it goes. Any other team, this would be an interesting decision. But the Jets have such a bad history, and their all-gas-no-breaks coaching staff isn’t exactly elite (with a history of making someone a captain without ever playing an NFL regular season game or having the support of his teammates), i’m just very skeptical that’ll work out well.
