Riley Cooper's new deal, and the effect on market price for Julian Edelman

Albert Breer is reporting the official WR franchise number to be $12.312m.

Good RB's are a dime a dozen WR's aren't.

Even our own (former--maybe still sometimes current) board member Greg Bedard stated in his Sports Illustrated MMQB.com story that he values Blount as the #52 free agent available.

In comparison, he has Julian Edelman lower on the list at #58....

The difference may be the fact that it's a buyer's market for WRs this year, and/or the fact that Edelman had one good year in circumstances that saw no other capable receiving talent on the team worth a damn. My guess is a bit of both.

That doesn't mean that Blount will get paid more, just that some see him as a higher priority for not only this team, but for all 32 teams across the board. We'll have to see how it ends up playing out in the next 2 weeks.

5/25 for Cooper. If we trade away Amendola as rumored, I'd be A-OK with a 5/25ish deal with injury provisions for Edelman.

I also don't understand the revisionist history with Lloyd. Since when is 74 catches for almost 1000 yards on a team where he's the clear cut 4th option an indication of a player unable to play in a system?

Lloyd could definitely play. He was just a headcase who was allergic to contact. His favorite move was dropping to the ground after the catch with NOBODY else around him! Is anybody actually surprised he got cut?

Not sure it's still a buyer's market with Cooper, Maclin, Boldin (soon) already off the board, along with Graham and Pitta. Who's left? Sanders, Edelman, Rice (risky), Jones?

Deep draft class, though.

Edelman seems to be pretty intelligent. He HAS to have seen Welker's season of brain trauma after brain trauma in the Manning "Completions!!!" offense. He's still got all his marbles in the bag so to speak. He has demonstrated a very high degree of efficiency with Brady. Perhaps he weighs the pluses and minuses of moving on. Perhaps he doesn't. One thing he DOES know, from watching, is you move to a new offense as a a slot guy, you better have a good post career nursing home for concussion cases written into your contract.

Joker,

That is an apt observation on how and where Brady throws the ball. He usually aims low to avoid the big hit and head trauma. It also prevents most tip passes that breed INTs.

Even Mallett is being instructed to, at his QB finishing school, to do precisely the same. It is hilarious to hear critics complain of throws in the dirt, but that is just about what Brady tries to do, mostly successfully.

Tom did manage to avoid most injuries to his over-the-middle, short crossing route, receivers too.

An incompletion is better than an interception. That's something I remind myself when Brady bounces the ball a yard short of his intended target in coverage.

Cooper's deal is for 5/22.5, not 5/25.

He's making 4.5 million AAV, which is right in the range of most projections with both players, depending on whether you view Cooper's deal as the ceiling or basement for Edelman. I view the 2 as comparable myself.

I'm hoping for something in the 4m AAV range for Julian Edelman, but it sure as hell shouldn't be any higher than 5m AAV, and that's a LOT different from some of these ridiculous "8 million dollar a year" projections that have been thrown around here lately.

I did not realize that Aaron Dobson is still up in the air with his foot injury, and is actually waiting over the next 2 weeks to see if he'll need surgery or not.

For some reason, I had assumed that rest would have taken care of things. That doesn't seem to be anywhere close to definite at this point.

Should Dobson need surgery, he'll obviously be unavailable for OTAs. I still think we need to add some additional talent/competition/depth at the position, despite any expectations for Dobson in year two. I suppose that could be done by adding a high round TE as well though.

Pats hope Aaron Dobson injury woes alleviate with rest | Boston Herald
