Resetting for day 3

Just curious--how does this compare to most years? I'm assuming that we'd normally have about 75 players after the draft (assuming they all get under contract, of course).

By the end of this weekend, the Pats may have signed as many as 20 rookie UDFAs. However, by next weekend, there could also be a couple-three NFL SFAs in the 90-man mix as teams make post-draft cuts (the second wave of FA).

After rookie camp, the Pats may well have cut a few of their initial UDFA signings and replaced them with other UDFAs. There will be some churn right through the end of OTAs.

Adding in the tryout prospects, the Pats may have sifted through 25-30 rookie UDFAs by the start of TC in August.

I can't tell you how many mocks I did over at FirstPick, where I traded down from 72 and picked both Rivers and Garcia. Apparently BB is living in my head. So for today may I suggest any of the following:

I don't think Butt will last til the Pats pick again.

Jordan Leggett TE Clemson 6' 5.5" 258- Great production at Clemson but under used. Could be a steal.

Bucky Hodges TE VaTech 6'6" 257-project, raw, long and fast

Travis Rudolph WR Florida St. 5'11.5" 190-just a great kid, made a lot of big plays for Florida St.

Amba Etta-Tawo WR Syracuse 6'1" 208-raw talent,

and the guy he has to pick.....
Ryan Switzer WR North Carolina 5'8" 180- he is a white version of Troy Brown, the kid just makes every clutch 3rd and whatever catch. He is a first down machine.

Tyler Orlosky C West Virginia 6'3" 298- with a name like Orlosky how can he not be good? Center is a need, I like Andrews but he is small and got exposed by Houston, may need to upgrade there.

Joby Saint Fleur OLB Northwestern Oklahoma St. 6'5 245- the length that BB likes at OLB, good late 7th UDFA target. Practice squad material but a dare to be great scenario.

Bryan Cox (Jr.) OLB Florida 6' 205" 265-BB broke Cox's heart last year in the Superbowl, he makes it up to him by drafting his son.

Jordan Leggett would be great. Underwhelming blocker, but he has got great hands. Huge value for a Te with a 2-3 round grade.

What are our remaining picks? I kinda lost track with all the trades....

Out of the #72 & #96, I was hoping that the Pats could add ...
... an OLB/Edge prospect with potential rookie impact
... an OT prospect with the potential to become a 2018 starter (or upgrade backup, at least).

I was hoping for Ryan Anderson for the first slot, but the Skins snagged him at #49. Rivers was my second choice.

For the OT, I was down to either Garcia or Davenport.

So, Mission accomplished.

For the Pats Day-3 picks (now down to #131, #183, & #239), the selections could be almost any BPA (with ST potential) at any position. It feels like they'll be icing on the cake, even if they only make the PS.

My priorities would include ...
... CB - potential 2018 starter at LCB (or at least Coleman upgrade)
... SF - legit 4th safety/backup with at least some potential to supplant Chung by 2018/2019
... DE - backup/special-teamer with the potential to add to the rotation in 2018
... LB - with solid coverage skills, potential to add to the rotation by 2018
... TE - potential competition for the #3 spot (solid blocker with some receiving ability)
... OG - upgrade to current PS backups with 53-man potential for 2018 (PS stash)
... DT - potential upgrade to Hamilton/Kilgo (PS stash)
... WR - potential 2018 contributor in the slot (PS stash)
... RB - potential 2018 backup/rotational prospect for either Gillislee or White (PS stash)

Still on the board are a lot of prospects with whom the Pats had pre-draft contact, and even a few binkies (Kittle!), so today and tomorrow should be a blast, regardless.

As far as a CB goes for replacing Coleman, BB has been pretty adept at finding quality CBs from the UDFA crop. Imagine what he can find as UDFA in a draft filled with strong CB talent like this one.

No complaints on their early picks this year. No Jordan Richards. I hope
they keep up the good work on day three.
I'd like to see them find a gem or two from the undrafted players.

You like him better than Kittle?

Didn't follow Kittle very much so I'm not sure about him.

What i like about Leggett is his sure hands/catch percentage. Developmental, but from a big school that he was underused. Needs work with routes and blocking but I think these coaches and players can make him better in many areas.

My day three preferences (iirational binkies rather than rational needs)

Mack Hollins
Jack Tocho
George Kittle
Jeremy Sprinkle
Corn Elder
Deatrich Wise
Jordan Morgan
Samson Ebukam
Howard Wilson
Keionta Davis

UDFA:

Drew Morgan
James Onwualu
Leon McQuay
Paul Magloire

And though whilst not a binky, have to mention Harvey Langi as a very possible pick.

Our lack of roster spot is known. I doubt we get many quality UDFAs. They agents should advise them to sign elsewhere.

Nice find! That guy has great closing speed, and looks to be good tackler.
I'll add Vince Biegel to the wish list as well.

Wilson is also widely reported to be exceptional in coverage.

Isaac Asiata
Vince Biegel
Jaleel Johnson
Samson Ekuban
Michael Roberts
Josh Agusta

Matt Milano is a small fast linebacker in the mold that the Pats have been seeking late in the draft recently. Carroll Phillips was also rumored to interest them.

Also, Matt Milano is a special teams demon. I believe he had a few blocked punts & is a wonderful, aggressive & an uber-willing tackler.

Kittle is smaller (6037/248) but uber-athletic. OTOH, his receiving production over the past two seasons at Iowa was only "decent" compared to Leggett's (big difference in QBs there, as well, though). But Kittle has a highlight tape ... of his blocking. Seriously, he doesn't just delay edge-rushers, he destroys them. He has Edelman-grade fire in his belly.

____

67 . players on the roster
c.42 . locks + another 10 likely to make the roster (most LBs f.e.)
3 . players who could possibly start on PUP

Uphill battles not only for UDFAs and SFAs but also for last three picks.
#131 is a very likely lock (going by history; @Miguel) -- so the one to watch!

Best chances for picks to make a roster re positions: TE, S/DB, LB/OLB, IOL
So look out for those - and to prospects with ST value..
