There’s a reason why Gordon overtook his targets...go rewatch (or better yet, don’t :D ) the Lions game, the last game before Gordon started. Dorsett had zero catches on 5 targets and couldn’t get any separation whatsoever. I understand the need for depth but this is the first signing/decision we’ve done so far that i’m not a big fan of.

This is going to be his 5th season and he’s what he is. He’s not going to suddenly become a monster route runner. He was almost non existent in his first year here, but that was attributed to having the need to adjust and learn the playbook and the relative saturation in the catching department, we had Cooks, Hogan, Amendola, James White, Dion and Gronk getting the targets. A full training camp with Brady was the remedy!

Last year we lost Cooks, we lost Amendola, Edelman got suspended and Dorsett still couldn’t establish himself at all, there’s a reason why we traded for Gordon, almost a desperation move as it became quite clear that neither Hogan or Dorsett can cut it. Let’s not forget that almost everyone thought that our season was over when Gordon got suspended. And the WR’s were by far the weakest group in the SB. Thank goodness Edelman and Gronk proved why they’re unbelievably good and clutch, because Hogan, Patterson and Dorsett were not the answer to anything. Neither Josh, Bill or Brady trusted him to have a single target in the SB and now after two years he’s going to become a major contributor? I don’t think so.

We can blame the system for his targets but let’s remember that he was a former first round pick that the Colts traded after only two years for our third string QB. His contribution there was more or less, what it has been here.

As a player that can get a catch per game while covered by the 3rd or 4th CB on that team, he’s alright. Anything more and he’s simply not good enough.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an “OMG what is Belichick doing, we’re going to suck!” post. I have the complete confidence that he’s going to put the team in the best possible position to compete. It’s still early March and who knows what’s going to happen with the draft and trades. I simply can’t share the apparent enthusiasm in this thread over this player.

You conveniently chose Dorsett's worst game of the season in order to make ridiculously misleading post. Dorsett was, in fact, on pace for a 64 catch season through 4 games. And that includes that Detroit game. However, since you've chosen to highlight that Detroit game, I'll highlight every other one of Dorsett's games before Gordon came onto the scene and displaced him:

    Catches/Targets
    7/7
    5/7
    4/7
    3/3
    total: 19/24

Furthermore, if you take away that 0 for 5 Detroit game in order to continue the theme of reversing your cherry pick, Dorsett was 32/37 in the regular season, and 5/8 in the playoffs.

Dorsett willy end up being more/same/less than you think he is, and I don't pretend to know which of those it will be, but that Detroit game isn't in any way definitive or exemplary of Dorsett's overall play last year.

You really have the temerity to blame me for making a ''ridiculously misleading post'' and then you go and use those numbers?

Dorsett's last actual 6 games before Gordon played against the Dolphins:

AFC Divisional against the Titans: healthy scratch
    AFC Championship game: 1 catch
    Super Bowl 52: 1 catch
    Texans: 7 catches
    Jags: 5 catches
    Lions 0 catches

In 2 seasons, 2 playoff runs and 2 Super Bowls, 6 games (5 played, 1 healthy scratch) all of them without Gordon, Dorsett has had ONE game where he has more than one catch. Which is exactly what my previous post stated. If you need a reliable WR 3 that's going to get constantly open against lesser CB's, Dorsett is not the guy. If you need an Ace-in-the-sleeve that's going to make one catch like the one against KC, sure.

Nothing misleading about a player that has played 2 years each for two different teams, has had no significant impact whatsoever in either, and averages 307 yards per season, which is what he had more or less this year with 290.

Dorsett has 1237 career yards in those 4 years, Gordon had 737 in 12 games with zero preparation with the team, getting traded in the middle of the season after playing only 5 games for the Browns in the previous 3 seasons combined. Gordon had 1646 yards in 2013. Dorsett will never sniff half of that in any season of his career.

If you're satisfied with a WR that had one target combined in the two biggest games of the year (AFCCG and SB) and couldn't establish himself in a WR core of Edelman+a very declined Hogan and a jack-of-all-trade-but-not-really-a-receiver Patterson, be my guest.

I have repeatedly said how disgusted I was with how he became an afterthought when Gordon came aboard. It just never made sense to me. Heck, he was at times more productive than Hogan. Go figure.

I’m not the biggest fan of his either, but he’s a fine enough signing for the moment, considering the fact that the cupboard was bare. The fact that he does have some experience in the system helps his cause. In the meantime, they’ll need to keep at it.

Really good start to FA so far. Love Dorsett being back. When called upon he usually delivered. Good top speed, pretty elusive and clutch when targeted.

Well I’ll be damned, I’m very happy. I hope the team can find a way to utilize him more this season.

As was the summersaulting TD he had earlier in the season.

I would also have chosen Patterson. I like Dorsett, but it just seems like he doesn’t get to see the field as often as the others. I also think Patterson took a lot of punishment last season but kept playing... how many wide receivers could play KR and RB and take that kind of punishment?

I can’t find much info on Damoun Patterson.
Does he have potential to make the active roster?

Hogan had a difficult time creating separation this past season. He clearly should have cut to the wide open corner of the end-zone (where TB12 threw the ball) on the missed flea flicker in the playoffs. My guess is he tests the waters but possibly comes back with a team friendly deal.

He's a jag. Bounced around. I'll handicap it at a 10% chance he's on the 53 and 50% on the PS.

I'm not really surprised, Dorsett had begun carving out a bigger role for himself in the last half of the season plus playoffs, he's getting better at running his routes and he's shown that he can win battles for the football. He can't beat elite coverage but he's rounding into a decent supporting piece, and it sounds like the price was right. Glad he's back.

For the record, Phillip Dorsett had the highest catch % of any Patriot this year who received a significant number of targets. I'm sure that has to do with Brady cherry picking when he'd target Dorsett but I bet it also factored into keeping him.

He’s a solid #3/4. As long as we get at least 2 more better receivers I have no issue with bringing this kid back. I think Brady likes him and he knows the offense.

We need depth players too. Just look at all the contributions Danny Amendola made over the years from the depth wideout slots. If you don't have that guy it's harder to get a good receiver matched up against a linebacker or create defensive breakdowns.

Dorsett is primed to have a very strong role in the offense next year and given his play in limited time I personally think he's up for it..

There is no reason Dorsett can't be a 50/500yd/5TD WR3 player in this offense. Hes a very good depth piece

The question is with those snaps can the team get better production out of a better player.

There is no denying that they did with Josh which is why he played more than PD
