Redskins are the favorites to land Holmes

Yes the whole CBA was written to solely benefit the New York Jets.

I really hope you are just busting balls and don't seriously believe this.

Of course not, but it was an easy way to win some points with the players' union at the expense of responsible GMs. That it happened to benefit irresponsible teams like the Jets... well, I'm sure that wasn't entirely coincidence, but it wouldn't have been the main goal either.

No the specific CBA language specified March 11th as the date.
Special request from Tannenbaum of the NYJ to former Jet employee Goodell, The Impartial One. Sorta like the special request that Tanny made over a minor camera placement issue a few years back.

no...we're saying it doesn't matter what the CBA says...the Rats are immune from ANY ramifications as long as Omissioner Jetdell is in power

Well that sucks...

But even with the additional cap space for the Jets they won't be able to re-sign all 3 of Cro/Holmes/Edwards right?

By contrast, the Pats appear to have saved a little under $1M, mostly on Tyrone McKenzie, Shawn Crable, and Rich Ohrenberger. I really wish that they'd cut Kaczur back in March, now. That would have saved us a little over $3 million versus cutting him now.

wrong....the Rat front office will float a rumor that these players are willing to take less to play for the Jets and Ryan(their basic criminal modus operandi), they'll make behind the scenes, illegal deals skirting the cap(Tannenbaum already has pulled this crap a number of times) and Jetdell will man the point for Woody Johnson, his master, and do his best to whitewash and pooh pooh any allegations just like he did with the toe sniffing degeneracy pictures of Ryan, or the 18 babies by nine different women irresponsibility of Cromagnonmartie, or the continuous pattern of statutory rapes committed by Mark Sanchez, or the outright slander by the despicable Westhoff, smearing the Patriots with blame for the Alosi tripping incident.

Probably not. They're still in rough shape with the cap, considering the sheer quantity of FAs that they have. My guess would be that they re-sign 2 of the three guys that you named above, as well as some of their other guys.

It is possible that Bart Scott could restructure his contract, but doing so would basically just backload it and virtually guarantee that he gets cut after this year or next, so I doubt that he would do that without additional years and additional guaranteed money. Sanchez looks like the clear candidate to restructure, Harris will probably sign a long-term contract, and I'm not convinced that Bryan Thomas won't be cut. In any case, the Jets are definitely in much better cap shape than anyone thought they would be.

Honestly, I wouldn't have a huge problem with this if every team, knowing these rules, was given a one-day grace period to release players without creating dead money against the cap. It seems pretty clear that the Jets were operating with the knowledge that this provision would be in the new CBA; if you're going to give amnesty for cap recklessness, at least give it to everyone.

If this is to save cap space for teams to promote more spending, there is no reason for the March 11th date. None.

FWIW, I just read this on PFT:

2011 salary cap flexibility: Even though the salary cap was ostensibly scaled back, teams were given two avenues to make it easier to retain high priced veterans this year. Teams can “borrow” $3 million against future salary caps to pay for veterans. They can also use another $3.5 million in what would otherwise be performance-based pay to use for veterans.

So the cap really isn’t $120.375 million. It’s basically $126.88 if teams want it to be. An extra $6.5 million won’t save guys that truly deserve to get cut, but it will make life easier for teams near the cap limit.

The CBA in a nutshell | ProFootballTalk

If this is in addition to the other cap space Jets got, I feel sick!!!

Agreed. That, more than anything, bugs me.

and Sexy Rexy doesn't care.....this is what he thinks of the entire league..

Blame Kraft, with out him none of this would of happened.

Jets ball busting aside that was precisely my thinking. It's hopeless that a sports reporter would have a clue about the cap and press a question "Why the date?" with Goodell or any owner on the negotiating committee.

Seeing how this is all attributed to one random link from a part of the espn site which you can't even bring up from google, lets all calm down for a bit. I haven't seen a copy of the real CBA up yet anywhere and I'm sure whatever reporter gets it first will go through it with a fine toothed comb so they can pull out 15 or so stories from it.

I tweeted the sentiment to Peter King and a few others; maybe we can get them asking this very question

who cares..give them all the money they want..they suck anyway.

They've sucked all the way to the AFCCG. I'd rather they suck to the top 10 picks in the draft.

If this is true...Guess the Jets are stuck paying Mark Sanchez 17 million...Lulz

No renegotiations for rookies that are drafted until after their third NFL season

I assume that is for new rookies starting this year. Otherwise the Jets wouldn't be able to cut Sanchize's cap hit, which obviously can't happen.

If the Jets do lose Holme to a different team, they should get a comp pick for him, maybe as high as a 3rd.

Speaking of Comp picks ....... is that system still the same?

Losing in the AFCCG and the wildcard is essentially the same thing.

They wont win the AFC East and chances are they wont get another wildcard with a bad season again.

BRING BACK MISTER CLASSY!!!!LaDUNCINGTON FOR COMEBACK AND LEFT AGAIN PLAYER OF THE YEAR!!!!
