Rapoport: Hightower expected to sign deal with NE, NYJ, or PITT TODAY

Sometimes people choose a Job because of $$$. I am not like that, but many (most?) are. And to say "he has all the $ he'll ever need", while true, is not the way many professional athletes run their lives.

I agree. If the Jets have a significantly larger offer on the table than the Patriots (if it's $13/$14 million) , then I would totally expect him to take it.

If they're equal, and he goes to the Jets, that's what I'm talking about.

Maybe DH is back to NY because the jets promised him to leave just one more piece of cupcake.

If he's gone, presumably to NO, we at least get our 32nd pick back don't we?

I would bet that and possibly their own third back would be the price. I seriously doubt it would be the #11. These franchises are good trade partners so I doubt there will be a screwing:

Quick question: if you were already financially secure, would you uproot your family and leave a job you love for one you hate solely for more money?

Quick question: why are you assuming DH would hate it in NY?
  • For a young guy NYC is likely more fun than Boston and certainly better than Foxboro.
  • NE isn't really his "home" anyways -- he just built a huge mansion in Nashville.
  • NYJ may use him in a playing style that's more enjoyable to him than how BB uses him.
  • See Curran's piece about how NE is significantly more of a grind than most other teams. With two rings under his belt he might want to take it easier.
  • While I'm sure the players all respect BB, I very much doubt they all like him. Hightower might be really annoyed by him and after years of Saban and BB might want to be in a different type of coaching regime.
  • And now add a bigger contract to all of that.
Of course fans believe that NE is the be-all, end-all paradise on earth that all players should give their eye teeth to come and play in.

And for some players it absolutely will be. But for others it won't and they won't even want to come here in the first place. And for yet others it's something to put up with as a way to check off the "won superbowl" item on the list before going to a more fun (for them) place to play.

I have this hunch that NE "fleeced" (as many have put it) NO in the Cooks trade with the understanding some of those picks come back if Butler and NO work out a contract and they can make a trade, essentially making it a Cooks-Butler trade

This might be a naive/stupid question, but it's one I've wondered about during this "courtship".

HT might be devalued as a MLB (vs a rusher), yet he seems to excel in the role of getting to the QB when he is asked to do so. Here is the question : why would a team not try to get HT and put him on the edge and tell him to go get the QB ? Pay him what he seeks and change his position. Everyone seems to want this type of player. Is it because the REASON he is effective is that it is unexpected ? Thoughts ?

Yep, Rats are offering HT a sweeter deal.

Thank you, I'll be here all week, and please try the veal.

'Twas just a hypothetical question to gauge the "money>everything else" argument.

It's not just a money>everything else argument, it's security for generations of your family>everything else

That's what Pitt was likely doing.
Many teams see him as an OLB. Here he is more OLB than ilb but essentially does everything any LB does.
If BB wanted to turn him into mcginest he would get double digit sacks ever year.
But his value is his versatility and BB knows how to get the most of it.

Again, stop. He's going to have generational wealth either way.

It's all good. We just disagree on the importance of non-monetary considerations.
