Rap: Mayo is the new HC

Disappointing with Vrabel out there
Vrabel won exactly two more games than the Patriots this year. The furthest he ever got in the playoffs was the AFCCG 5 years ago, since Brady left here, Vrabel has had exactly as many playoff wins. His team was also 4th in a division that frankly isn't that good. At least with Bill you could say the Dolphins and Bills were actually top AFC teams right after the Ravens.

This makes a lot of sense.

The only sour taste in my mouth is the same as I had when Brady left. Probably PTSD from Bobby Orr going to Chicago.

I wanted Brady and BB to retire here.

Now I want Mayo to be great. BB always said he was a brilliant football mind.
I’m a root for the laundry guy so I’m 100% behind Mayo. I’m just not confident Kraft didn’t set us back many years.

I don't hate that's he's the HC at all. Clearly the Patriots organization has thought very highly of him for a long time.
I'm not thrilled there was no search, I'm not thrilled there's no GM, and I'm not thrilled about the backstabbing that made it happen - but I'm not saying I hate him as coach. He'll probably be fine. We'll see.
The "backstabbing" angle is overplayed. Kraft would've known about all the drama on the staff whether it was leaked to the media or not. If nothing came out in that big story we'd still be exactly where we are now IMO

The players liked Pete Carroll too.

yeah, a "players coach" isn't always the best thing

but i also don't think mayo is a clown like carroll or mcdaniel........this is one area where i like that he played his whole career for bill.......if he can keep the foundation intact while modernizing the BB approach to players & their job, it's the best of both worlds......this is the area where the Mayo hiring excites me the most

there is NO doubt that the BB/Patriot way is what made this team a dynasty.......Brady took the principles and instilled some of it within he TB culture and made it work; others have tried to be the hardo in other places and couldn't pull it off......if Mayo can walk that line, it's already a good hire

but for it to truly work, we need a consistent, functional, & cooperative front office........it CANNOT be all modern analytics, there has to be a fit within the approach/culture as well; BB came TOO reliant on that and ignored the rest.....again, it feels like Mayo can walk that line, but the front office needs to be on board

and the OC hire becomes huge........HAS to be someone that can simply be given the keys to the offense, can make it function, can manage games.....

I wasn't sure if there was going to be a "process" but after reading about the succession language in Mayo's contract it was a done deal already.

I know there are doubters but Robert and Jonathan have a decent track record with these things....

Krafts Retain Bill Parcells (ending sucked but keeping him upon buying the team was smart)

Krafts hire Pete Carroll (Keeping Notorious BIG as GM was stupid but Pom Pom clearly was a good coach in a tough situation. Also wasn't quite ready but whatever)

Krafts hire Bill Belichick (mic drop)

Krafts hire Jerod Mayo (????)

They are 3-3 in identifying top quality coaches.

I said 2 days ago - if they go with Mayo, they are 100% hoping for the Ryans effect like in HOU...
But, chances of that are 0.01% because HOU had Casserio building things for 3 years, and they hit on the 2nd overall QB pick.

Our whole office & staff needs to be rebuilt, and we're going to be starting from scratch on offense... I'm disappointed, and will have very low expectations.

But, can only hope and pray that Mayo is wise, and won't flame out (like Matty P, and JMD) by acting with hubris and ego.
He better hire a very experienced and respected OC to balance his youth and inexperience.

The Patriots were required to conduct at least one minority outside interview, correct?
Probably worth confirming but since Mayo is of color/minority I think that requirement is satisfied..?

yet it's exactly what they did
Well yeah... look at how many people were dead set on keeping a coach who had GM powers that built the worst offense and special teams in football, hadn't made the playoffs in 3 out of 4 years, had hilariously one of the worst offensive rosters in the league and finished bottom 3 this year even behind a team that had their new star QB injured after 4 plays.

They pretty much needed to soften the blow for some people

If we went defensive I would've preferred Vrabel but from what I have heard the players love Mayo. My hope is he can do what Demeco Ryans is doing down in Houston. Young first time head coach with a rookie QB and some good young players turn things around quicker than expected. If Mayo really is the guy then I am behind him 100%.

Comments like keep the approach but modernize it scare the hell out of me.
The surest way to fail is to pick someone to emulate but change the things that were really what made them successful. No ind has ever been successful trying to duplicate someone else. It just doesn’t work, especially where people are involved because the interpersonal dynamic is way to complex to pick out what was ultimately a positive approach and what was ultimately negative.

An out of left field OC candidate that won’t happen: Wes Welker. He’s been a WR coach for 5 years under Shanahan & McDaniel. He’s coached Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jaylen Waddle & Tyreek Hill. He’s someone Mayo knows if they want to change the offense completely.

I like Mayo and I'm glad he's getting a shot. He's got great leadership qualities, he just needs a very good GM and assistant coaching staff around him. My understanding is that BB's organization was very unique with a small staff and none of the modern day analytic staffs and such. Hopefully Mayo and the new GM can modernize things.

What I'm most excited for is his interviews and press conferences. Some found BB's schtick funny. I found it painfully awkward and annoying. Mayo gave a great honest and direct answer to the leaked report of him being abrasive. I look forward to more of that.

This feels like a disaster. In what universe do you hire a coach before an effing GM????
In a universe where you can hire the HC immediately because he is a minority but you have to interview 2 minorities before you can officially hire the GM you have already selected.

I feel like people aren't getting that Bill was fired as GM more than as head coach. The odds Mayo is a better tactician out of the gate than Bill is zero, but that's not why Bill was fired. It was so someone else could be GM and get some goddamn talent, especially on offense.

If they hire an internal GM it was probably whoever Bill vetoed to keep taking defense and special teams jamokes in the last draft.
Nail on head. Bill was neccessary departure to get new blood in at GM and on offense. It was untenable to keep him and try to force him to work with a new guy.

Everyone who cried about the prospects of dropping Bill because they were afraid of what it would do to the defense.... congrats you just got the closest thing to keeping the defense while allowing room for everything else to be fixed.
