ProFW: Insiders say that Mayo is odds on favorite to start at ILB immediately

If Mayo puts on lean mass, he wont have to worry about losing speed. I doubt Beli and co are telling the guy to put on slop weight that will do nothing for him.

Lot's of heavy squats, snatches, cleans and bench benches coming up for Mr Mayo. I am glad we took this kid, he is going to be a beast.

The normal pattern for Pats first round picks is to get a lot of reps from Day 1, but not to get full starter's reps at the position. Mankins was an outlier in one direction, while Meriweather was an outlier in the other. And Watson was just plain hurt.

But Seymour, Warren, Wilfork, and Maroney all fit that template. And while I forget the details, Grahambo surely was close to it as well.

Since no one in the command loop would ever say something like that (true or not) at this point, you have to wonder what they mean by insider.

That guy at the ESPN message board?

Remember the last Pats rookie to start at ILB to open the season?
I believe that was Mr. Irrelevant, Marty Moore.
Have there been any since then?

On the 'gain 15 pounds' thing.
He's listed at like 245. Fifteen pounds would be 260.
Why would they want him at 260? 250 makes more sense, and is more achievable.
Part of what this guy adds is some speed.

There haven't been any day one ILB draftees in that time either - let alone top ten picks.

I wouldn't be surprised if neither Bruschi or Seau "start" next season. I put start in quotes b/c I think/hope we'll see some heavy rotations and situational substitutions to take advantage of the great depth we have at the position and keep guys fresh over the course of the season.

But as I just discussed with a fellow poster in another thread, Hobson - size and strengths wise - seems like a good fit for SILB, and Mayo seems like a natural fit for WILB. I've read some other posters speculate that the weak link in the D last season Bruschi playing SILB once Colvin went down, and given that, I wouldn't be too surprised to see Hobson playing considerable time at SILB and Mayo at WILB. Just my .02.

ProFW has been big on Mayo calling him a Rookie of the Year candidate. Last Thurs or Friday Felger was gushing like a little girl about Mayo.

Having said that, he has not played a down in the NFL so I want to see him in pre-season before I list him as a starter.

He hasn't even played a down in training camp yet. Me thinks that whomever this "Insider" is has no connection to the organization whatsoever. Let's save the optimism for training camp and see what he can do.

Do you remember what he said about Mayo? I've closed the iron door on Felger, but I am curious about Mayo.

Yes, he said that up close Mayo looked like a ILB in every way. It was the way he said it that made him sound gushing.

The inside linebacker of his dreams?........

No doubt everyone agrees with the rotation since that has the 'norm' last year and especially if Seau comes back which I think would be a necessary need. Like earlier replies, without Seau , a reliance on a guy like Hobson to 'master' & thrive at the ILB positions becomes a scary forecast due to the past failures from PATS free agents & where he comes from (an OLB from Man'gina' system..its not bad but...). Another reason is since it is unlikely a rookie , even as good as Mayo, can come in full tilt responsibly at ILB puts more pressure for a 'lots of playing time' necessary for both Bruschi & Hobson. So let's get Seau in here! (I'm just not convinced about Hobson)

Also, can Colvin come back for the vet minimum? An experienced OLB would b nice especially if a Vrabel or Thomas is needed at ILB. What's Colvin's status?

Thank God for your sources! We would be lost without them!

Oh crap, I posted in it the wrong thread. Oh well, it's the same thing.

Wait for something to happen, then report a source told you it would happen.

Re: PFW: Insiders say that Mayo is odds on favorite to start at ILB immediately

For me, the key is that LB was the weak link in our defense, and now it isn't. I am very comfortable with

ILB: Bruschi, Mayo, Seau, Hobson
I don't care who gets more reps.

OLB: Vrabel, Thomas, Crable, Woods
I don't care who gets more reps.

ST: Izzo

Outside looking in: Alexander, Ruud

The bottom line is that I am comfortable with EIGHT position linebackers getting significant reps. Barring injuries, that won't happen. Even with the dreaded two injury scenario, this still projects to a fine linebacker group.

We made three significant additions plus re-signing Seau (or still another vet). This is what we needed.

That's a championship caliber linebacking corps. It got a shot of the speed/youth it needed. Well done by the front office. My binky for the 09 draft is B.Cushing-USC. Looks like a Vrabel clone. Tremendous size. Hands look very strong. Once Vrabel got his hands on you. He didn't miss tackles. And, is very good at stripping the ball. Maybe, Cushing can fill that skill-set.

I don't know a lot of certainties, but one certainty I do know is that there were no real insider sources involved here. Some guy just connected a few dots and ran with it. A top 10 pick projected to get playing time? Brilliant!

Although a healthy Colvin would be a better player than a few who will make the roster, I think we have clearly moved on by adding Hobson, Mayo and Crable.
