One thing I like about the idea of drafting Lamar Jackson is, he can be a weapon with his legs. And while learning from Brady and Belichick how to be an NFL QB, he can probably rush for 500 yards a year out of the backfield. He would probably be a better running back than anyone we have currently.

I’m not saying to draft him as a RB, I’m just saying that unlike a prospect like Rudolph or Lauletta or White, you can use Jackson THIS year on running plays, screen plays, etc. He wouldn’t just be a benchwarmer like those 3 guys would be. At worst, it’s an interesting thought as to what kind of weapon Jackson could be while learning from the greatest QB of all time. I bet McDaniels could find some interesting ways to attack a defense with him in the backfield along with Brady.

Sure however it's Josh's job to teach him to look for other reads before he uses his wheels.
It's a moot point because I think he is going to the Dolphins Or Chargers.
We are taking White Lauletta or Rudolph.

QBs don’t always do what their coaches tell them to do. Sometimes their natural instinct just kicks in.

White, Lauletta and Rudolph are all develpmental QBs. Who know what we’ll get out of any of them.

Brady called Manziel a beast just saying.
And I'm sure we can find some quote where Brady put Tebow on the same field.
I have to think this is misdirection you get everybody to trade up and take QBs.
You stock the defense and O line then take Rudolph Lauletta or White in rounds 2 to 3.
Its possible but all these leaks are not Patriot like.
It will be exciting either way even if we trade down for a dozen third round picks.
Man it's a mixed bag giving that weapon on the ground for Josh he throws the ball no wasted motion comes out very effortlessly incredibly gifted.
Has to learn the nuances and hone the craft.
We have the coaching staff to get the most out of him.
I'm 50 50 on him in BB and CO I trust in this situation.

Mike white looked awful against ‘Bama. Granted western kentucky is not a good team but still....

This is sure shaping up to be a QB's Draft but like every other position it will be a crap-shoot the Best QB from this group may not be a First Rounder: anything can happen. The QB prospect we select granted Brady stays healthy for another year or two won't be thrown to the wolves. I hope the Patriots double dip this is of course after some extensive work at the position. They are quite a few developmental types that I think could be something a few years from now under the right conditions. I would take a QB on Day2 and the other on Day 3 we have plenty of Draft capital to accomplish that. Right now the Patriots have no Fourth or Fifth Round Selections I could see one of those First Rounders being dangled or even that later Second Rounder #63 to get back into those Rounds.

And who knows what we can't get out of them?? That's why the wise thing to do is double dip two heads are better than one. The QB position have been a luxury for us but that light ain't going to shine forever so you take the necessary measures now.

I can’t see Bill carrying 4 QBs. If they decide to part ways with Hoyer, then maybe they can draft 2 QBs...

A QB on a run first team is a run first QB.

This part can be trained, as happened with lost of other running QB's who came to the NFL, e.g Cam.

For me, the issue is being comfortable in the patriot offense and reading defense very quickly.

My problem with Jackson is that he appears to be a run-first QB - his first instinct is just to take off if the first read isn’t there because he’s so athletically gifted. If he’s like that in the NFL, teams are just going to sniff that out. I hope he becomes pass first and run as a last option.

That’s the thing about Cam - he tends to run a bit too much for my taste. If you can train Jackson to be like Russell Wilson and run only as a last option other than design plays, then he could be dangerous. QBs constantly running are going to get themselves hurt.

I don't why it would be unlikely for us to have only one first rounder. Trading down from 31 is certainly possible. [or to trade into 2019 with pick 31].

I suspect that many would be fine with a trade down from 31.

Got a feeling we are only picking once in the first round. I'd be ok if it was only a smokescreen to get bpa but it does feel different this year.

The point is that both are franchise QB's and would do fine leading the patriots.

CAR is still primarily a running team, not a pass-first team like the patriots. If Cam were here, he would pass more.

FWIW here is Jackson against Clemson, one of the top teams in college football. It didn’t look pretty. One of things you should look for in a QB is how they play against top competition, even in a losing effort. Just look at how Brady performed against Alabama. Jackson could have had some good games against other top teams, however. This is just one example.

To be fair, Jackson's team was really bad and Clemson was just miles better. Sometimes you just have handicaps you can't overcome.

It leaked out for a reason that BB is interested in Jackson. It’s called misinformation. Do you really think the Pats are willingly putting this out there? Now I’m quite certain the Pats have no interest in Jackson or any other player that’s leaked out.

Aside from Greg Olsen and one year of an old Steve Smith, Cam has just had garbage to throw to his entire career too. And he won an MVP with Ted Ginn as his top receiver. And, while he does a lot with his feet, he's not a "running quarterback." If he never ran again he'd still be a top-8 or so QB.

He has before.

Yes, this is a special time. In 2000, we kept 4. When JAG came, we didn't, but that is because JAG looked so good.

Folks can call it a smokescreen, but the last time the patriots interviewed and were connected with this many QB's was the year we drafted JAG. The pats may or may not be creating a smokescreen about which QB they want. Our interest in JAG wasn't a smokescreen.

I suspect that the patriots are genuinely interested in Jackson. That's not my choice. And, certainly we could draft someone else. But, IMHO, we will draft a QB in the top 50 (probably in the first 25), and another in the 5th or 6th round.

AS AN ASIDE
Using ONLY one of our five top 100 picks on a quarterback gives us lots and lots of flexibility in this draft (and next),

Judging by that Instagram post, one Tom Brady disagrees with your assessment.

I'll trust him.

Yes, because being a great player is all you need to be a great talent evaluator... ask Michael Jordan. He's much better than Danny Ainge...

I think this might be the case. Maybe collusion between Belichick and Brady to feign interest in Jackson?

It's practically impossible to have a player visit without it being reported, so by this logic all player visits are misdirection, which would be startlingly stupid.

Believe it or not, the Patriots don't play 4-dimensional chess. They only get a limited number of personal visits with players and the teams they'd theoretically be competing with for Jackson are all ahead of them in the draft order. You can be pretty certain they have genuine interest in just about any player who Bill Belichick takes time out of his day to meet with, interview, and work out. Whether that interest continues after the visit or whether it translates into a draftable grade is another story.

Did the pats "leak" their interest in JAG when he was drafted? The reality is that significant interest in quarterbacks is difficult to hide. Of course, Belichick has been known to draft players in the 2nd round that others had rated as 6th rounders. That is NOT the situation here. I expect Belichick to draft one of the top 10 rated quarterbacks in the first 2 rounds, and another later. So, sure, Belichick could draft the 6th or 7th rounder in the 4th or 5th, "surprising" everyone.

BTW, we WILL have a pick in the 4th and 5th with a bit of a trade down from one of other picks. We don't have to trade down far from 31 or 43 to pick up a 4th and 5th.
