I don't see any way the Pat's beat the Bills now, unless the Bills are still in shock. With the Cincinnati game now being rescheduled for after week 18 the #1 seed will still be in play. Also the Bills will play their hearts out to win this game for their fallen teammate.

If they're playing they will be. Guaranteed.
Will they play if the worst happens during the week? I wouldn't blame them if they didn't want to.

The Cincy-Buffalo game has been officially rescheduled with a formalized date? I haven't seen this reported anywhere. The only thing I've seen reported is that the game won't be played this week, which doesn't say much about what the ultimate outcome will be.

It will be played after the Bills / Pat's game is what has been announced. That means the #1seed could still be up for grabs. Now had Cinci beat the Bills last night, and KC defeats the Raiders next Saturday, the #1 seed for the Bills would not have been in play when we meet them. Now it still will be. That was my point.

Link? Goodell's statement said nothing like that.

The league also said that it “has made no decision regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date”

By rules the commissioner doesn't have the power to make a team forfeit except in very specific circumstances and this isn't one of them. There's no provision in the rules for teams to agree to a tie either. The Pats-Bills game will be played this weekend unless the players decide otherwise and probably the Bills-Bengals after that if it matters.
Replace tie with removed. Goodell seems to have a large amount of flexibility in what he can do. But part of my point was, even if he could, he wouldn't impose an L on Buffalo under this circumstance. I don't think he'll unilaterally impose any outcome on any team. I think the teams, coaches and player, called off that game last night before he did. This situation seems to be moving in the most logical direction at this point, which is indefinitely postpone the Bills-Bengals game and proceed with the week 18 schedule. Sunday night they can definitively determine how to best resolve the Bills-Bengals game. I think they'll come up with a plan to conclude it.

One thing that sounds entirely improbable to me is the idea that Buffalo will forfeit any game. From their perspective. And the league's (a permitted forfeit would set an undesirable precedent).

I think they are referring more to the head injuries than this one. Look up the concussion rates in football vs. some other sports. Its actually crazy, with exception of Ice Hockey/Rugby there aren't any other sports even close and those two sports have far less participants at a youth level even combined. I also think there is a culture of ignoring/covering up concussions in football more than other sports...so who knows how many go unreported...

I am no brain expert, but there is also the repeated hitting of the head in football. Every play. Argue all you want, but there is no way that is GOOD for your brain. I love the sport, but I'd think twice about letting my (non-existent as of now) kids play.

I agree that this particular injury was a freak accident, had nothing to do with player safety (unless something went unreported/ignored by team staff - which I highly doubt).
(potentially going too deep down a rabbit hole here, mods feel free to shut this down, but) I don't think this is true.

"Overall, the data showed that the three sports with the highest concussion rates were:
Boys’ football, with 10.4 concussions per 10,000 athlete exposures.
Girls’ soccer, with 8.19 per 10,000 athlete exposures.
Boys’ ice hockey, with 7.69 per 10,000 athlete exposures."

"Rugby (4.18/1,000 AE)
Ice hockey (1.20/1,000 AE)
American football (0.53/1,000 AE)
Lacrosse (0.24/1,000 AE)
Football (or soccer) (0.23/1,000 AE)"

  1. That doesn't seem like "there aren't any other sports even close". It is a sport with a significant occurrence of concussions, yeah.
  2. But again, this incident had nothing to do with that, and if last night's incident makes you not want your kid to play football, you shouldn't allow your kid to play baseball, soccer, etc. either.

This data is contingent on accurate reporting. I think it's highly likely (if not certain) that concussions happen in American football at a far greater rate than they are reported (generally and relative to other sports), given the nature of the sport literally and culturally.

I don’t know, guys. I get it after seeing head injuries like Tua’s, but this really didn’t seem to be a football-specific injury that occurred due to the violence and brutality of the game. This type of injury happens more often in baseball and softball from the impact of the ball. I wouldn’t use this incident as the motivation for not allowing a kid to play.

I had started to come around because of head injury stuff, and honestly my own joint issues from just HS football.

I wouldn’t STOP him from playing, but I’m not going to try and convince him to either.

Then, logically, such a thing would happen more often in other sports as well, and it should all balance out at the end of the day.

I’m always baffled about girls soccer being high on all those lists.

This would be the craziest thing yet, because the team that loses that game will have to play again a few days later. Both teams will forfeit before this happens.

I would if I were either team.

I'd rather not have a bye than potentially have to play a team 3 days later.

I'm not.

I see girls getting concussed all the time in girls soccer, I've seen full speed hits that are just brutal.

Then there are the goalies, a lot of them burly, who blast kicks with shoulder tackles when diving for the ball, and if the goalie goes low, they get a flying knee to the head.

Some of it comes from body-to-body collisions, but I've heard speculated that the reason women's soccer is consistently associated with high numbers of concussions is from heading the ball.

The reason women suffer relatively more concussions (in soccer) is because the muscles that stabilize their head/neck are usually weaker compared to men, so the head/skull is less stabilized when they head the ball, leading to more brain shaking/trauma.

on a side note, cheerleading has a high rate of concussions, 3.6 per 10,000. Both of my kids participated all through high school, there were a number of concussions every year. One of their classmates had to give up a college scholarship because of suffering too many concussions.

Still thinking about the Mo Lewis hit on Drew. No CPR and not quite the same impact but the hit was kind of similar and that could have just as easily been a tragedy…

4.5% greater chance of Pats beating Bills than everything else happening to let them back in but 32% overall.

He's been really bad. We need for Bailey to come back quickly!!!!

When we need him to angle a punt and get it inside the 20, he boots the ball 50 yards. When we need him to give us a huge punt, he kicks it 37 yards. Just bad.
I'm interested in his average hang time to combine with the 'lack of length' argument to offer more context.

My suspicion is a consistent hang time allowing for coverage to "get there" vs length was the reason for the Palardy signing.

Palardy actually has a better current average length (by half a yard) than Bailey and a better net which surprised me. He's not "peak" Bailey by any stretch, but he's basically what would be expected for a mid-season off the street guy. It's another example of thinking you can have an all-pro at every position in the NFL at any time in any circumstance and actual statistical evidence be damned.

Yep. I have 3 daughters. All played very competitive club soccer. All 3 have had concussions.
