I watched the first half again hoping to see what was happening to the Will and Wilson show, since good pass blocking is going to be so critical to the game on Sunday. I also listened to some pods which discussed them as well and here's what I feel now, after feeling VERY shaky in the immediate aftermath of last week's game. (I'll go back and watch the 2nd half later... or not.)

1. Maybe it wasn't so bad after all for Campbell. I read that his stats weren't all that bad, and while PFF can be very misleading, but they are good INDICATORS of what's happening and from what I've seen so far, I'd have to agree with them. Their run blocking has been solid and I saw a double team they did in 2nd half where they blew out the DLman a full 7 yds on what wound up about a 6 yd run.

2. Phil Perry offered as at least a partial explanation. He opined whether Campbell was fully healthy yet. He noted that on a couple of sets he made his first step straight back, and set in motion the bull rush of Mack. Normally he would WIDEN as he dropped which would deflect Mack away from that direct power move (I hope I'm explaining that well). At any rate, making it more difficult for Mack to walk him straight back into Maye. Perry's thought is a legitimate opinion. If we had been 4-9 rather than 9-4 maybe they would have shut him down for the year.

I hear another clip from the Compton and Lewan pod. they played for Vrabel, and speculated what they'd hear from Vrabel based on their experience and echoed a thought I had early on, on how to deal with what they will face. Basically, they said they they will have to attack it and not be passive. In other words, if they get off the ball fast they can step INTO the block before the defender can develop much momentum and after the initial hit, back off into your drop, but now against a much less powerful rush. It's a very delicate technique. You don't want to go too far, or the defender will pull you by, or you lose any balance be vulnerable to a hump move. It is literally a bump to lessen the momentum and back to your drop, At any rate, the clip is in this thread and shouldn't be missed.

BTW- back 60 odd years ago, before OL could extend their arms, this was basically how linemen were taught to pass block. How to stop a rusher's momentum and ride them away from the QB. This is how John Hannah pass blocked, Hit then create space. Hit then create space keeping yourself between you and the place the QB is throwing.

Wilson fared worse I'm afraid, but it's not that he was physically outclassed by SD. Sometimes he seemed confused out there. The sack he gave up in the 2nd quarter, he was literally bumped off the block in the wash, when he originally had good contact to start. I'll understand more when I watch the 2nd half tomorrow. (I'm watching "Miss Scarlet" tonight)

On one hand I'm looking forward to how much better Campbell and Wilson will be next year, as well as a lot less worried about the 2 of them against the Texans in 5 days. There is no doubt that that defense is going to be tough AND will speed Maye up. But there are also things that Josh can do and Marrone can teach to mitigate the pain and make their jobs a bit easier. But that for another time. There is murder afoot in the streets of 19th century London and it is the first show of the season.

Yes, they ran the ball surprising well. 164 yds at 5.3 yards a clip.
Stroud threw for 250.
The game ended up a laugher with he 2 defensive TDs, but Houston very easily could have scored 30 on offense if Stroud didn't throw that terrible pick and the 2 terrible fumbles.
Again, they moved the ball well, and then Stroud did his best to try and lose the game.
If you count the ones he dropped and picked up I think it was 5. Don't expect him to do that again but if out D plays like last game, should be close.

right, it was 5. I don't know if the ones on the snap were his fault, but the other 2 and the pick were terrible.

Just learned Josh McDaniels brother, Ben,
is a wr coach for the Texans. Does anyone know how long he’s been there??
He is also their passing game coordinator. He has been there since 2021 and passing game coordinator since 2022 I think

I never said they scored well, I said they moved the ball well because they did.
Your argument was they gained 1/4 of their yards in their last 2 garbage time drives, and they didn't have 2 garbage time drives. They didn't even have one garbage time drive.
Their last O drive which you are saying was "garbage time" started with them up 11 and 9:29 left to play.
That's plenty of time left in a 2 score game, but you say Pittsburgh gave up.
Pitt was most certainly trying to stop Houston on their last 2 O drives and they couldn't.
Houston didn't have any garbage time yards.
They had 9 drives. 5 of them totalled 101 yards and none of the 5 made it to FG range. That is absolutely NOT moving the ball well.

Drake has to be very quick and smart with the ball. Get it out fast, accept the incompletion or sack if necessary.

The defense is going to need to deliver another A+ performance.

The Houston offense should be kept to 10-13 points. Their Defense could give them 3-7 points.
=================
The game is up to Maye, pure and simple. Our OL, WR's, RB's, and TE's are as good (and as healthy) as they have been all year. Maye makes the decisions on each play. He is free to make adjustments.

Good. The game is in the hands of the best player in the league.

The Texans have on their Practice Squad Roster a guy by the name of Haggai Ndubuisi. The Patriots claimed him off waivers from the Commanders, but immediately waived him the next day with a "Non-Football Illness" designation. The Commanders then signed him to their Practice Squad and immediately put him on the Practice Squad IR.. Just strange happenings all the way around.

NOTE: The Patriots official website Transaction page doesn't even list the two transactions with Haggai Ndubuisi as having occurred. Nor does he appear in any articles if you do a search for him on the website..

Called the Pats-Giants game this year at Gillette. Had the good judgement not to overreact and flag Christian Elliss’ hit on Dart and then to flag the overacting Giant who wanted to go medieval on Elliss.

Their offensive performance is somewhat similar to the chargers overall according to the numbers. Chargers have the edge in ypg (ranked 12th vs hou at 18) and hou has the edge in ppg ( ranked 13 vs lac at 20). The Texans have forced 6 more takeaways and have 5 defensive tds to the chargers d having 0 tds according to statmuse which is significant, i think that mostly makes up the discrepancy in both (less ypg needed for hou, more ppg- 35 points off the defensive tds amounts to roughly the difference between them in points for of 36)

If the texans are missing nico, theoretically its a worse offense than the chargers. They didn’t really have omarion Hampton at full strength but vidal may have been just as effective this year when he was out. Anyways they were without Hampton much of the season for the numbers above. Nico is much more valuable than him. If we don’t have gonzo it likely cancels out but my feeling is gonzo plays / nico doesn’t.

Protect.the.football. It doesn’t mean we can assume theyll only score 3 but i feel like we’ll be in control of the game barring turnovers becoming a factor.

Will the defenses outscore the offenses?

Our base Offense should include 6 OL's.

Curiously, I think that we have better opportunity for passing yards out of that set.
Pretty inconceivable we will have to go with 6OL.. was watching NBC sports Boston yesterday and saw Perry mentioning about all the NEP ties at Houston. And how they have an advantage. Not really... the film with Josh's offense under Brady has no relevance to the offense being run with Drake.. Drake is a dual threat QB and at the least will still create some doubt with Houstons front.. that can be an advantage patriots.

Looks like Terrell Jennings and Alex Austin about to come back off IR.

So they cut Johnson. Hm. Definitely signals the return of Jennings, since Johnson was active and used a lot on ST and also sprinkled in on offense a bit.

I thought Johnson did a solid job with what he was asked to do, and at least did not screw up, but was really just very average. Jennings might be able to give them a little more pop.
