Practice Squad Taking Shape

Re: Re: Practice Squad Taking Shape

Err...I agree. That's why I'm not interested in Winn, who does not possess those attributes. (Even his boosters call him a BJGE type.)

I wasn't aware of that, my knowledge of Winn is limited and I had evidently formed my opinion on some misinformation. Given what you've said I agree he does not fit a need and wouldn't be an ideal PA candidate.

I firmly believe that the coaching staff holds Bolden in higher regard than many of us do, I don't think they consider him to be anything close to a practice squad type player.

As far as the squad as a whole I agree it has shaped up well thus far, although I would prefer to move on from Tarpinian given this is going to be his 3rd season on the practice squad and we still felt the need to bring in a guy like Chris White to fill a role he'd ideally be the perfect fit for.

Agreed. Why would BB waste his time with a player he viewed as a fringe-roster talent that:

-Got busted for PEDs
-Has dealt with nagging injuries his rookie year and during TC/preseason
-fumbled the ball and got benched during week 3 of the preseason

BB would cut such a player in a heartbeat. IMO, he views Bolden in a higher regard and that's why he's put up with him.

. He's impressed more in the last few preseason games than Dobson has so far.

No clue how someone could think that. You are basing it off of 2 catches, one where a guy that is probably now unemployed whiffed on a tackle and a catch where the Giants probably thought they were gonna kneel to end the game.

One great thing about a Bill Belichick team: if a UDFA actually does outplay a 2nd-round pick you'll know it, because the UDFA will be the one getting the reps. Just ask Kenbrell Thompkins.

6 WR's, none of whom seem likely to help on coverage units?

Never going to happen.

The only difference to what the Pats have now and that list is Sims and Harrison in and Edelman out.

So they'd be losing Edelman from the coverage units.

But Sims played some on the coverage team in the preseason. He could take the year to continue working on the coverage area of his game and into next preseason.

And Slater would still be on the team, I know he is listed as a WR but he's played more Safety than WR.

Don't forget TJ Moe with a whole year rehabbing and learning the playbook.

2nd year WRs galore next TC.

Isn't there some really bad percentages in terms of how a player's career goes after spending the first year on IR?

Here's a name for you: Kerwynn Williams. A Leon Washington type, in build, speed and skillset. 7th-round pick just waived by the Colts.

Who ended up with DTs Jaye Howard and Marvin Austin?

I don't believe that Marvin Austin has been claimed by anyone, as he cleared waivers today. Of course he has some serious character concerns, but the talent is likely there to offer some sort of contribution.

It could also be one of those famous "laziness" issues, or not taking his job seriously enough etc. That recently happened to Jonathan Dwyer RB for Pittsburgh, who just last week was slated to be the RB1.

So I take it there was no overnight George Winn signing? C'mon BB, what are you playing at?

We've got Sims, now let's go for Winn.

2013-14 New England Patriots practice squad

Sims, Quentin - thumbs up

Forston, Marcus - okay

Tarpinian, Jeff - okay

Davis, Ja'Gared - who?

Davis, Kanorris - ugh!

Green, Justin - ugh!

Where is George Winn? How about some toys for Dante Scarnecchia?

Am I the only one who didn't see much in Winn? I expected Sims to clear waivers and join the practice squad; Winn I didn't even predict a PS job for.

The guy was cut after minicamp with the Texans, then didn't see a preseason snap with the Patriots until game four, when he looked workmanlike and ordinary on his way to 3.9 ypc.

Winn fans, sell me! What am I missing?

1. What isn't there to like about having BJGE on your practice squad.

2. The Texans thing doesn't really count - they signed 3-4 RBs as UDFAs.

3. Winn is outstanding at recognising and hitting a hole. This is why he was the most explosive back in CFB last year (# games with a min 18+ run).

4. Arguably the best blitz picker up on the team.

5. As we saw in the Giants game, always falls forward on contact and picks up yardage that seemingly wasn't there.

6. Very low mileage. Last year was his only full year as a runner. Served as Isaiah Pead's FB before that.

A more explosive BJGE? Yes very please.

Edit: 7: Winn shares near identical athletic scores with Mark Ingram. Winn is .30 seconds faster on short shuttle which is the one major difference (although they were identical on 3-cone). There's also a .20 discrepancy for Winn between his combine and pro-day and Ingram sits in the middle of that range.

Hmm. Given that I was firmly against drafting Ingram because of his lack of athleticism, and that he is currently buried deep on the Saints' RB depth chart, that's not necessarily a positive to me!

But you did make a persuasive case for somebody giving Winn a shot. Personally I don't think it should be the Patriots, because as I said above, I think they'd be better off with a Faulk/Woodhead type of player on the PS. (On that front, no word yet on whether Kerwynn Williams cleared waivers. I even think he'd be a reasonable waiver claim for the Pats.)

I wish we signed that 6'7" WR Philly had in camp. Ifeanyi Momah. 6'7" 240 and runs in the sub 4.4. I think Philly cut him.
