Been thinking he's on his way back since before the end of last season. I said early on that SF would cut him if he wouldn't renegotiate way down. I never thought he would, particularly with the Pats out there, and I cannot imagine SHanahan making the move he made AND keeping Garoppolo at that price.
My prediction now: Pats trade for him (the reworked deal to adjust/add extra years rumor is true) with a mid-round pick and maybe with Cam going in the deal, as well. Garoppolo penciled in as the starter for New England for 3-5 years, at least.
My preference: Rookies are more shiny and fun, which is why they're so hyped (ratings and hope go hand in hand), and it would be exciting to see the Pats grab a kid.
I'm not even sure that Garoppolo will outplay Newton this year - I don't hate Newton and think COVID, bad weapons, ab injury, lack of practice, etc. was a big part of last year, but whatever.
So...I'm fine with Garoppolo, fine with a draft pick, fine with Newton...and can't wait for the season to begin with all the additions, in any case. I do think if he can stay on the damned field, Garoppolo will kill it with the Patriots supporting Offensive cast.
