No one is stepping up? I suspect that Vrabel thinks that Diggs, Boutte, Douglas, and Hollins are stepping up and doing all that was expected of them. Obviously, WIlliams is a rookie who isn't ready for major prime time reps, but that often happens with a talented rookie
Williams has certainly stepped up is spots and showed serious abilities, including the ability to separate.
===========
Perhaps, you mean that no one is stepping up for the 6th WR spot, presuming that there is one. Most here would choose Chism. Vrabel may agree, or not.
I clarified my post with a follow up.

But here goes again. First I would not include Hollins in the stepping up category. I don't think he's done much and yet he's probably still WR6 if we even carry 6 which I don't see the need.

Diggs has been awesome returning from injury but has he truly shown to still be a 1A?

Personally I think Pop has done more. He's definitely stepping up.

Boutte has stepped up by picking up where he left off and I actually thought he'd come back down a little. He's definitely earned a spot but how high is his ceiling?

Williams is safe by being a rookie and he's flashed enough to get excited about but some of that momentum has slowed. I'm not holding anything against him but again I don't know if I'd say he's truly stepped up and claimed any kind of role yet.

Chism has stepped up and claimed WR5. Maybe even 3 or 4. Hard to say he's passed Williams and/or Boutte. I wish I could say one stepped up and truly showed themselves more.

And after this I don't feel anyone else has stepped up. And it makes me feel like the competition to win the top 5 wasn't as hard as it should have been. In part due to the injuries to Bourne and Polk but I don't feel like anything was really won as much as some guys sucked and some got hurt leaving us with what we have.

This just made me wonder if the problem with the Pats inability to draft rookie WRs and have them pan out has not been the draft selection, but the post-draft coaching and development. Could it be?
None have really left NE and gone on to have success.

Teakwood is winning vs backups and starters in camp trying not to get injured.

Seriously - everyone assuming that Chism is gonna make the roster has undeniable "Bam Childress is a lock" vibes to anyone who started rooting for this team before Tom Brady was an AARP member.

I don't like Polk, and I do like Chism but there's very recognizable patterns when it comes to preseason darlings if you've been rooting for this team for more than a few years and are currently able to legally buy alcohol...
Berrios as well.

You very well could be right. I'm not writing anyone off mostly because they collectively all aren't stepping up to claim that last spot. If there even is a 6th spot to claim.

Going in Diggs, Pop, and Williams were safe. Boutte quickly claimed a top 4 spot and seems like Chism is grabbing 5. Why even carry 6 at this point IR DTR one or 2 and defer the choice and save roster spots for other players more likely to be on the GameDay roster.

The reason to go with Polk is lame but it still seems soon to give up on a second rounder.

Also we didn't get to see all the OTAs and we don't truly know how Vrabel and Josh feel about him and wether the injury truly is the end of the line for them. Remember they aren't holding the past against anyone (like we are) they said clean slate.

I don’t think he can have it both ways. You cant say that the past shouldn’t count against him, but then say to keep him because he was a second round pick. I was fine with giving him another chance this season, but then He didn’t earn that chance, and I think they should go with the players they believe will be most valuable to them going forward. I honestly don’t care what they do with him cut him, IR him, or try to sign him to the P.S., which I think he will reject. The bottom line for me is that he has been incredibly unreliable for them.

I know I'm basically saying the same thing but it's not about being a second rounder it's about the skill that made him a second rounder. And if you're Vrabel and weren't here last year it might be hard for him to give up so quickly considering the injury.

Hypothetically he could have shown enough in the spring to still be ahead of Hollins who missed time himself and hasn't exactly lit things on fire since returning.

This kind of goes to my point of no one stepping up. It was unfair to the 4 top guys and even a little unfair to Chism. But it's not like the rest have made it very hard.

I've seen zero people complaining about that.
The worst I've seen is that he's slow, which he objectively is, but as a slot guy that doesn't matter.
And the best is does he get separation? The answer is absolutely yes, and he does it consistency up to this point. Will that be different in actual games going forward? We hope so.

Do you apply the same logic to Caeden Wallace?

I have seen a number of people knocking him because he went undrafted, but they have agendas so I don’t pay any attention to them.

Chism has shown more this offseason than anyone. He’s been one of their best performers at every stage throughout the offseason, and people keep saying “ wait until this, wait until that…..” and he just keeps showing up and performing well. There is no way in hell I would take Polk over him, nor Hollins, Baker, or Bourne.

How does someone “have an agenda” if they are skeptical of a player no team felt valuable enough to draft?

I couldn’t care less what happens to Polk (can’t stand him as a player), but will be very bummed if/when Bourne is given the boot.

I don't like Wallace at guard. And I think Campbell, Moses, and Bryant have stepped up more than most of the receivers. That said I'd probably prefer to keep Wallace too as a 5th tackle. But as a 3rd rounder there's also a better chance we could get him to PS than Polk.

I was late to the party but I've come on board the Chism band wagon. He's easily earned WR5 over the guys I'm complaining haven't stepped up. And I might even argue he's earned WR4 over Williams though I'm not quite ready to go there yet.

Yep; still one of the worst units in the league.

Look all I'm saying is that I'd feel better about our top 5 receivers if Hollins, Polk, Baker, and Bourne offered more competition then I think they have.

I went into camp thinking that given the numbers that the WRs that did win would have truly earned their spot by beating out the others. Instead 2 got hurt, a third got a late start because of injury, and the fourth has barely impressed and that's been on STs. That makes my evaluation of the top 5 not as good as I expected.
