Per Breer: Mac Jones "infuriating" coaches with decision making

the sad thing is that the Patriots evaluated Jones and deemed him worthy of the 15th pick knowing that he had an average arm, limited mobility, but allegedly "excelled" at decision making and processing defenses pre-snap. This just looks like another piss poor assessment by Belichick and his staff. Mind you, I've been generally supportive of Jones but the interception in Miami really made me reconsider. Jones is playing worse than some of the backups the Pats have faced the past few seasons.
So you were good with the Pats starting the ghost of Cam Newton another year?

“…it doesn’t feel like he’s taking the coaching” (@0:33)

he is not taking the coaching, but he’s calling everybody he knows looking for the answer, and defending that in his press conference.

and that play where he audibles to Gesicki, has him and then doesn’t pull the trigger? WTAF?
I just think he's broken. He doesn't trust what he's seeing and waits to pull the trigger or just goes ultra conservative and tucks it and runs. I don’t think any amount of coaching here will fix Mac and he probably needs a clean slate elsewhere if he has any chance of ever even being a serviceable quarterback.

From my comfy barcolounger he does not appear to be making any decisions just flinging the ball and hope a receiver finds it..

I wonder where he would have dropped to if we didn't take him. I would guess Washington at 19 or maybe 21 with the Colts if they weren't sold on Wentz at the time.

I don’t think a clean slate elsewhere will help, unless the clean slate includes wiping his phone so he can’t call his friends for coaching instead of listening to the NFL coaches his team paid to coach him.

Problem is the difficulty in evaluating how a rookie will respond adversity, or even to success. Average arm and limited mobility were traits evaluators used pre-draft to describe TB12. How was that assessment by Belichick and his staff, also piss poor? Brady just ground through both adversity and success without letting either change his approach. No way a pre draft evaluation could know that, any more than it could tell Mac would chase every source of advice he can find, with no filter whether it’s good or bad.

"The wiring is off right now".

That doesn't happen to any QB on its own. This is what trash coaching does to young QBs.

Both him and the team will be better off when he is sent packing.
Agreed.. I'm curious to see what Grier can do.. if he's any good.. Mac will be traded to San fran.. for a 3rd.. Grier the bridge while we draft the new QB?...

Mac ain’t getting more than a conditional 6th

In all fairness to Mac him reaching out for help last season was due to his coaches incompetence.

Nice clean pocket.
Mac has Raegor open for 6 or 7 yards at the bottom of the screen and I don’t think he even looked his way. He legitimately looks like made one read and took off from a clean pocket.

He’s still doing it.

it might be part of the reason he’s still playing as badly this year as he did last year.

Looked like he might’ve had the seam deep, can’t be sure whats out of frame though.

Where did you see he is still reaching outside of the organization?

Looks like Gesecki running that seam route and I agree it is hard to tell if Mac had a window. Either way I don't know why he needed to take off there. At the end of the video he seems to show his frustration but he has no one to be mad at but himself.

49ers got a 4th for Trey Lance and he's done nothing in the NFL.

So Mac ought to get at least that in return but I don't think they'll do anything until after the season.
Lance has untapped ceiling that could be sky high.
With Mac you are gambling on a basement floor and hope his Brain gets fixed.

It is quite clear that Jones is broken. He isn't the same player he came into the league as.

It is on him for not having the mental toughness to overcome it, but it is on Belichick and the rest of the coaching staff to do everything in their powers to break him. It was "How to ruin a young QB 101" the last year and a half. But a QB with the proper mental toughness shouldn't completely fall apart like Jones has.

He does remind me of Tony Eason. In Eason's rookie year, he looked to be one of the better picks of the 1983 QB class. Definitely not Marino, but better than a lot of the others. But he got hit a lot behind a bad o-line and just started to see ghosts. He would dive to the ground the second a defender was within two or three yards of him.

Jones may be able to get his head back on straight and become the player he was. But I personally wouldn't trust him after this. I think the best thing for him is to go somewhere else and be in a place where they will put him in a position to succeed. Once a QB is broken though, the success rate of them getting their head back on straight and play well again ain't great.
