I hope the Patriots bring in some help at WR, TE, IDL, and offensive line depth (swing tackle, center/guard). I guess we could roll with Froholdt, Cajuste, Herron, and Onwenu. Depends on what is available.

I had thought that a lot of teams would be shedding mid-tier veterans because of the likely salary cap drop to $175 million in 2021, just to clean up their caps, but the players getting released so far aren't all that desirable (Fournette - 700 carries last 3 years with second lowest YPC leaguewide; Rosen - top-10 QB already burned through two teams in two years). It might take a trade to pry a useful player away from another team.

Kept Miller because of Harris injury
Kept Burt even though I liked Rizzo, blocking never stood out, Burt can be back up FB
Cut Cunningham kept Herron who is a more obvious practice squad guy
DE is a weak position. Anticipated cutting Wise this year, not happening, don't know what Rivers is, liked Calhoun last preseason but didn't show up in games.
J. Williams does double duty CB/Safety. cut special teamers, Davis, Bethel,

I think that Lamar Miller might be cut and then re-signed after Week 1 if Damien Harris can be placed on a short-term injured list;

I'd rather have Izzo than either of the Two Jakes;

Devin Ross ahead of both Meyers & Jeff Thomas? We need Meyers' experience now that Sanu's gone, and Thomas has too much potential to risk losing just to keep an inferior prospect like Ross;

DT looks really thin, literally...I think Fat Thor makes the initial 53 then is placed on an injured list in case he can return later in the season;

I think it's either Scoota Harris or Straight Cassh Malulu, but not both;

And I would much, Much, MUCH rather have Cody Davis (or even Justin Bethel) than the less-than-useless Terry Brooks.

Last stab at it, unless reinforcements arrive, and that right soon:

Lamar Miller & Xavier Williams re-signed after Week 1, Damien Harris & Fat Thor to short-term IR;

Jakobi Meyers' experience & Jeff Thomas' potential are too valuable now to risk losing on waivers;

I'm keeping a 3rd TE & a 9th OLman instead of Jake Johnson;

Terez Hall sticks around because he might be our only mid-fielder who can possibly be able to cover somebody;

Bentley, Malulu, Copeland, Scoota Harris: they all suck, so whichever two best floats your boat I guess...

We need a backup/apprentice Slot CB, so Bryant sticks around for now;

Justin Bethel's my 54th player; Terry Brooks wouldn't be my 154th.

cut special teamers, Davis, Bethel,

When Michael Lombardi wrote his article "How to Beat the Patriots," the #1 thing was
An Organizational Commitment to Special Teams.

Belichick routinely keeps 4 to 5 players who play mostly or exclusively on STs beyond K/P/LS.

Offense (24)

T (4) I.Wynn, J.Eluemunor, K.Cunningham, Y.Cajuste

-Izzo to practice squad. Can sign a low-end veteran tight end or claim someone off waivers if necessary
-Think 9 OL makes sense with needing 8 for game days, and starters + Froholdt seem locked in. I picked Cajuste since he’s a 3rd round pick with a redshirt year, Cunningham to have an OT with some experience, and Onwenu. Herron or signing/claiming another OL are also possibilities.

Defense (21)
DT (3) L.Guy, A.Butler, B.Cowart

CB (5) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Jones, J.Jackson, J.Williams
S (4) D.McCourty, K.Dugger, A.Phillips, T.Brooks

-B. Allen to IR (probably have him on initial roster and then send to IR. Can temporarily cut a veteran if needed). Light on DL currently but can claim/trade for someone
-Some of the EDGE guys can also play ILB

Special Teams (6)
M.Slater, J.Bethel, C.Davis, N.Folk, J.Bailey, J.Cardona

11 defensive backs, sounds about right for a bb coached team.

11 defensive backs, sounds about right for a bb coached team.
I suppose it is a reaction to how NFL football has changed to being such a pass oriented game now. The nickel is now the primary formation, placing a larger need on defensive backs. Plus players at those positions tend to be fast and know how to tackle, making them more useful on special teams (punt and kickoff coverage in particular) than most other position players.

For what it is worth, here is the initial roster. I will be curious to see how it compares to the week 16 roster - or for that matter, compared to the week one roster at kickoff.

QB: (3) Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer
RB: (4) Sony Michel, Damien Harris, James White, Rex Burkhead
FB: (1) Jakob Johnson
WR: (5) Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, Gunner Olszewski, Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers
TE: (3) Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene, Ryan Izzo
OL: (10) Isaiah Wynn (tackle), Joe Thuney (guard), David Andrews (center), Shaq Mason (guard), Jermaine Eluemunor (tackle), Hjalte Froholdt (guard/center), Yodny Cajuste (tackle/guard), Korey Cunningham (tackle/guard), Michael Onwenu (guard/tackle), Justin Herron (tackle/guard)

DT: (4) Lawrence Guy, Adam Butler, Beau Allen, Byron Cowart
DE/OLB: (5) Deatrich Wise, John Simon, Chase Winovich, Shilique Calhoun, Derek Rivers
ILB: (4) Ja’Whaun Bentley, Josh Uche, Anfernee Jennings, Brandon Copeland
CB: (5) Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams
S: (5) Devin McCourty, Kyle Dugger, Adrian Phillips, Terrence Brooks, Cody Davis

Special Teams: Matthew Slater (ST/WR), Justin Bethel (ST/CB), Jake Bailey (P), Joe Cardona (LS)
